Dom Starts a Minor Fandom Apocalypse
Despite Tinhatters labeling Elijah as the Gay Messiah, it's Dom who's about to be crucified, and by his own most hardcore fans, which makes the whole situation that much closer to religious parable. Course, now that Dom has started a vertable Apocalypse in a small corner of the fandom, I'm sure there are former fans labeling him as everything from the First Evil to the Anti-Elijah (read that as you will, grotesque Tinhat double-speak firmly in cheek).

Way back in December, Best of Both Worlds announced that its LotR themed convention occurring next week would be highlighted by the appearance of Dom, Craig, and several other minor character actors from the movies (Jørn!), as well as two senior WETA designers.

The intervening months have seen much squeage in various places on LJ, most in a fans run community. Personally, I "know" several people who were going to this convention specifically to see Dom, some from as far away as the UK. People have, quite literally, invested thousands of dollars in this, between convention costs, airfares, accommodations, etc.

Yesterday, the shit hit the fan. Dom, offered a tv pilot by Disney that begins filming the same week, has canceled out. All within minutes, people are screaming, crying, drinking, and now making LJ icons that show their disgust. Not to be missed is the special snark that erupts when the con organizers announce they have gotten Joel Tobeck as one of the replacement guests they are casting around for. Who?!?, the peanut gallery seethes.

Well, I really do feel sorry for all these people who have invested quite a bit both financially and psychically in this. Also, I feel very, very sorry for Craig, in a weird way. He's about to walk into a totally hostile room next weekend, and have to try to give them their money's worth. Now, while I know what an absolute performer and enchanting man Craig is, I still think it's rather like Daniel in the lion's den (keeping with the Biblical imagery). Poor boy... I would hate to be surrounded by Dom fans on the edge, especially as most are now vacillating between, "Only Billy will do as replacement!" and, a la Salome, "Bring me Dom's head on a silver platter!"

Yeah, someone on my LJ f-list is heartbroken over this and thinking about leaving fandom (I'm not sure if she means leaving this fandom or leaving all fandom behind forever). I feel bad for Dom--I mean, he's sort of the least visibly successful/well-known hobbit at the moment, so that Disney pilot must have seemed like a godsend.

Oh for fuck's sake. People pull out of convention appearances all the time, for all sorts of reasons. While I feel for these people, they really should have been aware of this fact before they set their hearts (and wallets) on seeing Dom.

If I hadn't long ago sworn off the insanity that is LotR fandom at large...this would seriously make me consider such a thing. Yes, it sucks ass that someone you've wanted to see isn't going to be at an event that you've planned long for and spent money on...but it's hardly the end of the world and you'd think more people would be happy for him being able to capitalize on LotR and get work elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the people who spent so much money and wanted to meet Dom in person at the con...

But there's still everything else to do at the con. Meeting online friends for the first time, meeting new friends, discussing the fandom, going to see the other actor's panels... it's a letdown, but one can still make something of it.

Besides, now they have the perfect Drunken Room Party Game - DomPiniata!

Also, I feel very, very sorry for Craig, in a weird way. He's about to walk into a totally hostile room next weekend, and have to try to give them their money's worth.

I'm going to see Craig!

Up until about a week ago [just pre-Oscars] I didn't really mind about seeing Dom. Yeah, it was going to be good and all, but it was Craig I was going to see. [No, I'm not ashamed of being a fangirl :) He rocks my rainbow stripey socks!]

It was just with all the excitement leading up, and clips I'd seen, and realising that OMG I was going to be meeting a hobbit[!!] that I finally managed to get excited about seeing Dom. And then this makes it all feel very blahhhh and bitter. But still: Craig!!!

I'm actually quite surprised that it took this long to get here. Given that it's pretty much gone stale now... hold out for the second wave Tuesday...

But isn't this a LOTR convention? I mean, I adore Dom (though Elijah is my TWU WUV OMG) and I would LOVE to meet him, I wouldn't pay to go to a con just to see him. I wouldn't do that just for ELijah either. I WOULD go to a LotR convention though. And if they were there? EVEN BETTER! But hanging out with people of a common interest, going to panels, etc....that's the big part of the experience.

I can understand being upset. Really, I can. However, seeing that LJ entry linked above that called Dom a "thoughtless cunt"? OMG COME ON! As a FAN, I want my favorite actors to be SUCCESSFUL so I can see more of them!

Dammit, there I go again with that earth logic. I've really got to watch that. ;)

I feel bad for the Aussie fans. They really don't get many cons down there, and it must be a huge disappointment. However, I don't feel bad for the UK fans. The phrase 'more money than sense' comes to mind. It's not like every single con ever didn't have an 'appears subject to work commitments' disclaimer.

There are scads of cons over here. A friend of mine met Billy Boyd at Comic Con just two days ago. Dom will turn up here sooner or later.

Damn. That's the con I want to go to. Some of the cast members are rather free with the kisses and room keys when they get liquored up.

I think there's more wank in the comments than in the posts...

Yeah, someone who is, oustide the fandom, a very minor-league actor would be insane to turn down a Disney pilot for a convention. Yeah, I don't get the whole wanting desperately to see someone because they were in some movie thing, either.

But people who have spent a lot of money and a lot of anticipation on something that is cancelled or changed at the last moment have the right to be upset, and to vent about it.

And for the anon. Australia has a lot of distance going, and not many people, and what a surprise - not many cons. And if you truly think a few thousand dollars extra is a trivial amount, I'm in the market for a ticket to Buenos Aires right now...
