How dare you oppress me by forcing me to cut spoilers!
As anybody who's anywhere near the HP fandom knows, the The Leaky Cauldron released the OoTP summary from the Scholastic catalog that sort of raised a fuss.

Even though I completely understand about not wanting to know any spoilers (Buffy spoiler vegan), I was still a little amused at some of the more stronger anti-spoiler reactions. But then I saw lavenderoracle's response to it all in

To those bitching about not wanting OotP "ruined" for them.

Go live in a cave for the next two months. This is the biggest literary event in HISTORY. Any of you hear about Dickens? When people in New York were CRYING OUT AT THE DOCKS to the people on board a ship from London carrying the latest serial "Is Little Nell Dead?" Yeah, this is kinda like that.

Fuck you all for making something that should be fun and exciting into some moral fucking dilemma. Do I spoil myself? Or do I remain pure? What if I lose my friends by letting something slip! Oh no! She'll hate me forever! And fuck you for assuming that people who want to read spoilers aren't as exicted about OotP. Aren't PURE NOBLE and GOOD fans. That somehow our excitement ruins your enjoyment.

Just, fuck you. Go live in a fucking cave and quit bitching about it. I don't want to hear it.

And then one more, although shorter and without the cursing, that even invokes the first amendment.

Still, the wank isn't over yet. Someone brilliantly responded to one of the stronger reactions by saying that if they want to avoid spoilers to just turn off their computer. Because putting spoilers in some kind of tag is just too much effort.

Edited: HTML is apparently too complicated for me.

My first FW post! :D

Both sides have good points, I held out against the evil of the spoilers for a whole hour. Then I read them, and it wasn't bad.

The point is though, that everyone is using very amusing and condesending tones. Cause, this is one of those Live or Die matters. If you see a spoiler, it just might make you explode.

And conversly, it is going to Kill people to put spoilers behind tags. Ouch. I can feel their LJ-cut pain.

heheh. I find it amusing that HP is the only fandom where people have a problem with the 'spoiler behind cut tag' thing. I guess it comes from having cannon that is know by almost everyone...

Oh, HP is far from alone. There's a lot of cut-tag controversy in Queer as Folk and Buffy, to name a couple...

Star Wars fandom was like this over Attack of the Clones. I had a friend who was upset because the posts to the MA list about the freakin' trailer spoiled her.

You know, I can see the putting spoilers behind cut tags thing, because I know other people get way more freaked out by them than I do; but dude, Jesus. The day I get so "Aaaahh I don't want to be spoiled no no no!" about anything, let alone a children's book, that I don't even want to read chapter titles, someone kindly smack me in the head with a dead fish and tell me to stop the damn wanking and regain a smidge of perspective.

One of the Many Signs of Good Wank:

Someone quotes the First Amendment.

And I just wanna say I'm distraught because someone said Harry's getting a mohawk. Damnit I didn't want to be spoiled. *sobs*

Is anyone else mildly horrified that the release of a Harry Potter book is being described as the biggest literary event in HISTORY? Anyone?

... Guess not. I'll just go hide in my cave of "J. K. Rowling? Whatever"ness then.

I think just to be a pisser I'm gonna stick that up in the English department at school. See how many Ph.D's I can get to collapse on the floor screaming and sobbing.

I like HP and JKR as much as anyone else, but until she's part of the canon, she's just an extremely popular writer. The greatest literary event in history, imho, would be the discovery that Chaucer DID finish the Canterbury Tales and he was just hidin' them from us. ;)

Some of those Harry Potter fans are just plain crazy, man. Apparently, some people are even under the impression that Diana Wynn Jones copied JKR. Right. She plagiarised, and then *travelled back in time* to get the books published ;)

Whether or not you think that JKR is important or any good, OotP is breaking all sorts of publication records. HP has totally changed the way literature (and children's literature) is perceived, interpreted, and marketed. That in itself is remarkable.

The funniest thing is, the "spoilers" everyone is so up in arms about are so MINOR that they will hardly interfere with anyone's enjoyment of the fifth book. From the fuss that was being kicked up, I halfway expected the summary to leak which character is going to get offed, but there's almost nothing of substance there at all. It's the summary from the freakin' book jacket and nothing more.

Sheesh. I guess some folks just need something to get pissed off about.

I'm finding this all incredibly funny. For the record, if anyone wants to spoil me, go right the fuck ahead! Meanwhile, I think I'll post a bunch of spoilers of my own:

--Harry and Draco will NOT start having hot gay sex;

--There will be NO graphic descriptions of twincest;

--Snape will NOT wash his hair, get a tan, and start dressing better in an attempt to seduce Hermione or Ginny Weasley;

--There will be no mention of Lucius' Pimp Stick (tm);

--Sirius and Remus will NOT have a Big Gay Wedding.
