Doctor Who Fandom: Beyond Good and Evil
Disclaimer: I am in no way involved in Doctor Who fandom. My knowledge of DW fandom extends basically to vaguely remembering that my older brother thought those Daleks were pretty cool. Apparently to attain true understanding of this wank one must be fully attuned to the way of the DW fandom.

I'm just bored of seeing posts on my friends' list bemoaning the fact that this hasn't hit here yet. (Okay, there was only two by the same person. It's the principle of the matter.)

As far as I can tell, versaphile states her desire to "build up a good Doctor Who community in my forum of choice."

Barbthebrazen (amongst others) takes issue with this, and ends up pitting good fan against bad fan.

Versaphile responds.

Throughout this, nostalgia points and laughs, gives vague indications of a mountain of backstory and gets accused of inciting a flamewar.

Like I said, I know nothing about any of this. If anyone wants to fill us poor unenlightened peons in on the rest, or if I've made a mistake, just let me know.

I found a Dr Who book once, when I was cleaning out a wardrobe full of stuff that hadn't seen the light of day since the '80's.

...maybe they're books?

Dr. Who

Old school british TV show; longest running concurrent Sci-fi show ever (25 years, I think). Those of us raised on WETA loved it. It was originally meant to be a scientific and educational program, but the Daleks (scary robots) were introduced in, I think, episode two or three and the show took off as a sci-fi adventure show. Most fans watch it as much for the cheesy effects as anything else; some of them are AWFUL. 8) The premise is that the Doctor is from Gallifrey, and when one of his bodies dies he gets another one (apparently younger every time) until he hits the twelveth form and dies completely. They stopped making it with Doctor 7 (w00t; loved him!), made a stand-alone American movie about Dr. 8 set in San Francisco, and then all went quiet again because it didn't take off in the US right away. (Dr. 8 was one of the cutest, though.)

Pardon the infodump; I'm a shameless Dr. Who fan.

Man, old fandoms are the best for wank. They seem so quiet and staid. Sort of like a frozen over pond. Except it's one of those ponds where the ice isn't actually thick enough to stand on and then someone does and then they're knee deep in ancient wank that was bubbling under the surface like larva, just waiting for someone to accidentally start it off again, regardless of whether they were there for the first wank or not!

:looks at paragraph:

I think I got my metaphors crossed. ("Don't cross the metaphors!" /ghostbusters)

:watch this wank with interest as has small interest in Dr Who:

Wow, way to go with the overreacting, barbthebrazen. I read the first link, the one to versaphile's post and started thinking 'this isn't wanky, what's VT talking about?' and then clicked over to barbthebrazen's post.

*SPLOOSH*

Ah, there's the wank. And lots of it. I love it when touchy, humourless drama queens feel the need to defend themselves against attacks no one made. The smart ones are the best: really get the blood moving.

Barbthebrazen does appear to a) have some idea that people are interested in her dinner and b) seem to be disproportionately upset about the use of the word "chickie", given the number of times she italicises it. ITALICS OF SARCASTIC RETRIBUTION!

Man oh man.

Yeah, I was astonished at the extent to which my use of the word "chickie" caused her to froth at the mouth and gnaw chunks out of the drywall. To my eyes that word's not even particularly insulting.

It was sort of like the wank equivalent of tossing the basketball casually back over your shoulder on the way to the locker room and scoring a full-court nothing-but-net basket.

Without knowing any of the backstory, either, I really don't see what the problem was with [info]versaphile's post to promote such an hysterical outburst by [info]barbthebrazen. I pimp my friends into my fandoms myself... it's only natural to want a fandom full of people who share your approach to fandom and who you can connect with.

Also without knowing any backstory, I want to smack [info]barbethebrazen for things like this:

I did however say I do not like you talking down to me and being talked down to by others. I refuse to take it in real life (professional and personal) and I refuse to take it on the net as well.

~sings We're not gonna take it anymore.~ So, she's refuses to take it. What, precisely, is she going to do about it? Makes me want to join in just to talk down to her.

I wish I saw enough Doctor Who to be a real fan, anyway.

So, she's refuses to take it.

I can communicate in English, I promise. Just not, apparently, here.

Anyway... Class warfare? ~splutters coffee~ I want to learn how to "smack someone around" by "discussing fandom and dynamics", because it sounds like a novel and useful form of violence.

That was... interesting.
I expect the fans will shortly grow yet more... vocal, when the new series hits the small screen. BBC are currently commissioning for it.I believe it's due to air autumn/end of 2005 (verry roughly) so expect lots of "X should be the new Doctor!" "OMFG look what they did to the Daleks!" splurty stuff soooon. Me, I can't wait.

that's just too funny. love the people standing back going "...wha? are we supposed to be indignant about something?"

seriously, if barbthebrazen wants to be angry about people accusing her of being a 'bad fan', she should try a music fandom - i'd recommend pink floyd or radiohead.

"your interpretation of this completely nonsensical lyric is not identical to mine. as i am such an uberfan that i am able to channel the deepest and innermost thoughts of thom yorke, this means that you are a gibbering idiot and must be fed to rabid wolves."

I was hoping that this would have all died down by now but since it hasn't here's the backstory on this issue. Backstory to the Saga of Versaphile (http://www.livejournal.com/users/edithmatilda/177414.html) This all took place over a year ago and we have all dealt with the type of comments I took offense to since it occurred.

I would provide more links to other comments in her journal but I have been removed from access. However, there have been other examples of this type of behavior. One such I can remember is her calling the Doctor Who fandom that existed boring and not to her liking. She says she wants meta but when we give her meta we are told we are willfully misinformed.

You may believe the post was unwarranted, however once you view all the facts it becomes quite clear.

Sincerely,
