Icz mentioned these in the comments on my last post, but...
Here are Ardent Valkyrie's other two "masterpieces" just for posterity:

The "right" way to say "yaoi", aka Let's Start A Useless Grammar War, aka "FANGIRLS ARE SOOOOO STUPID!"

"POTC Slash is bad and people who write it should be hit in the face! Or something.

I'd wax lyrical on feeling guilty about directing this person to RFS, but...she was sneaky. She hid her true colors so well...plus, I did this BEFORE her post to MSR caused wank. :P

Holy crap. "OMG U CANT SAY IT RITE SO UR NOT A REEEEL FAN!!!11!!1!1!1!!!!!1!11eleventy"

Granted, this version of that old rant had better grammar, but the basic idea is the same. WHO CAAARRREEEESSSS? It's taking all of my self-restraint not to jump in there headfirst.

Haven't gotten to the PotC one yet. Between the yaoi (YOWIE!) and the Cassie-Claire wanks, I'm all shagged out.

The right way to say "yaoi" is with your mouth but there will always be someone who insists on talking out of their ass.

Well, it is true that Passion of the Christ slash could be considered offensive to some.

But Jesus did avise loving your neighbor.

Well I would like to know how the heck you pronounce 'yaoi'.

I've been saying it 'ya-oh-ee' in my head and praying that it never comes up in converstation.

I was alternating between 'yah-oh-ee' and 'ee-ah-oh-ee', but 'yah-oy' looks correct to me.

'ya-oh-i' (short 'i' like in 'this').

I only heard the 'yowee' pronounciation when I went to Yaoi-con. First time I heard it, I gave the person who said it a look that said, "What the hell did you just say? Because I think I heard something, but it sounded like a sound effect from the 60's Batman tv series."

is that first girl serious?

never mind 'fangirls' - 99.999% of canadian television broadcasters, in every single field, horribly mangle any french word or name they attempt to pronounce. to date, i haven't yet sent one of them a seething letter demanding that they get their sorry asses off the air for bastardizing one of our national languages. and they're getting paid; they speak for a living.

i think a few people misprounouncing a japanese term with virtually no consonants can be forgiven.

I actually was glad to finally figure out how it was pronounced, but it is a little unfair to be so critical of those who mispronounced it. After all, no one before this point ever prononounced it correctly for me, and I came across the term on the internet, where you only have text. If everyone mispronounces it, how was I supposed to know the correct pronounciation?

I've read some of her journal entries, and she claims to speak Spanihs and Japanese.

So do I (I really DO speak them...).

However, I have been trained sufficiently in linguistic theory and translation to realize that if it's not your native language, and you're monolingual, you're just going to take your best crack at the pronunciation.

Now why, pray tell, does the mispronunciation of a Japanese word in English cause so much wank, and not the "incorrect" translation into katakana of an English word a Japanese speaker has no way to pronounce? (The example that comes off of the top of my head is tsuâ for "tour".)

The Japanese-Culture-Is-Unquestionably-Superior-But-I-Don't-Understand-One-Iota-Of-It-Syndrome comes into play again....

Daku! Garu! And let's not forget all of the foreign names that gets messed up in Katakana. In Yu-Gi-Oh two of the characters - Malik Ishtar and Isis Ishtar - have their names written as Mariku Ishitaru and Ishizu Ishitaru, respectively. (Er...I'm pretty sure that Katakana say Ishitaru, but I could be wrong.)

Well to be fair, English has all the sounds necessary to say Japanese words, but Japanese does not have all the sounds necessary to say many English words (such as tour, since there's no "to" sound).

These days I don't know if PoTC stands for Pirates of the Caribbean or Passion of the Christ. Either way, this woman is Sofa King Wee Todd It (I saw that username on WinMX and I about busted a gut). I couldn't even get through the "yaoi" without my eyes rolling completely up in my head, rendering me unable to see. I just love people who are so locked in their OTPs that they shit bricks if anyone writes outside it, no matter what the genders of the pairing, trio, quad, entire ship's company orgy, etc. It makes me giggle like Brother Porky the Piggle, O.F.M.

*wank*

People who use Fangirl Japanese give me "the *no* feeling". Usually because every Japanese word that comes out of their mouth is mangled horribly. Now, if you have little or no knowledge of Japanese and are making a logical guess based on what you've seen in writing, that's fine. No problems.

It's the people who claim to "know Japanese" because they watched a few fansubs or maybe even downloaded some J-Pop mp3s that piss me off. Yes, pop culture can be a good *starting point* for learning a language, but until you can do something other than parrot back catchphrases and random words, you do not *know Japanese*. Kind of like how my ability to say "merci beaucoup", "allons-y" or "ferme la bouche" does not make me fluent in French.

It's funny how the rant itself is a classic example of rabid fans who suck. It's a fucking acronym of a Japanese phrase. Who bloody gives a shit? Check out my comment below:

I'm hardly a rabid anime fan. And I have always pronounced yaoi "yowie." It's not silly-sounding or anything. "Yah-OI" sounds like you've been butted in the gut halfway through a Howard Dean-esque screech. It's so silly of you to attempt to make up some sort of standardized pronunciation. A lot, if not most of the majority of yaoi fans connect through the Internet anyway, so who gives a shit? I also resent your implication that not knowing the correct way to pronounce things means you are stupid. It means you are ignorant. But there cannot be a correct, canon!Japanese pronunciation for an acronym of a Japanese phrase. It's just. Plain. Stupid.
This kind of nitpicking is a great proof of why rabid. fans. suck.
Mmkay, thanks!
