And thus, the MST3K fandom succumbs
[info]saburochaos posts in the MST3K community an interview of Mike Nelson in which the beloved host talks about his Christianity. Some people bless him ("That's an awesome interview..") other people are pissed that the sarcastic, cynical, hilarious Mikey has sold his soul to the devil ("And my best friend used to idolize him too....she says this is a slap in the face to her").

Christians wank. Some other guy wanks (and there's wank in this post about if Midwesterners are all Christians). And then Steph adds her enlightening thoughts.

Why, MST3K fandom, why? You used to be so clever! So snarky! So un-lame!

Awww, not the MST3K fandom!

*is going to go run a mental checklist of her fandoms and she if she has any wank-free ones left*

Don't bother. I looked at some Mad Mad House comms, a reality show that debuted last week and there's already wank.

[info]ailei may know better than I, but I've not seen any Charolastra wank yet.

Though, with the influx of xxbabii_gurlxx types to some of the Diego comms post "Havana Nights" there probably will be.

Yes! I'm so glad you put this up. When I first saw that post on my friends list this morning, I was just like, "...". The MST3K LJ community has to be the least wankiest (large) community I've ever seen. And now, this. Figures it would be about religion. >_<

I just don't get the people that said things like he seems less funny now that they know he's Christian. I mean, wtf. Seriously, WTF?!

I'm hoping this wank is just a one-time thing.

Wank: humor and context
[info]cesare

Sorry to splooge a bit, but--

I just don't get the people that said things like he seems less funny now that they know he's Christian. I mean, wtf. Seriously, WTF?!

I don't agree with that point of view, but I can understand it. Here's why.

A lot of humor depends on context. For example, MST3K's joke repetoire includes a lot, "" of gay jokes. A LOT.

Now, because of the show's overall lighthearted, sophisticated tone, the context for those gay jokes always seemed to me to be something like, "We're pointing out the humorous disjuncture between what the filmmakers intended to convey, vs. what a modern, more enlightened audience is likely to infer."

But if the show's head writer, Mike Nelson, is Christian and, from that fact, you extrapolate that he believes homosexuality is sinful and wrong (and I'm not saying that it's correct to make that leap, only that the connection could be made,) then those jokes could seem less lighthearted, and could be interpreted as closer to someone pointing at a man who puts his arm around another man, and snickering, "Fag."

Which might make those jokes seem a little less funny to some. Context.

To quote something I saw on metaquotes, WTFucketh?!

Since when does someone's religion matter to their humor? Whatever else the man may be, he's also RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY. You know, the kind of funny that made MST3K so kickass?

Sheesh.

I read that interview, and found myself disagree with pretty much everything he said there. But, you know, it doesn't matter. MST3K is fucking funny, and he's great on it. You can like someone's art, and hate their politics. In fact, it's kind of necessary, unless you make every writer, actor, and musician out there take the Political Compass test. That would be especially hard with the dead ones.

This makes me very glad that I stopped following that MST3K community back in September. Because this I do not need.

I can actually understand being boggled by this revelation, since there are actually several Christian denominations that consider sarcasm and snarky humor to be (very minor) sins since they fall under the 'thinking mean and uncharitable thoughts about people' clause.

Still, to wank about it is pretty far from necessary.

Not all Christians are morons with sticks up their asses, though. Those are just the conservative ones from Texas. Most modern "Christians" are actually following a made-up crazy whacko religion which has nothing to do with Jesus anymore. Perhaps the fact that this guy is rather on the funny side means he's not quite as retarded as most when it comes to religion. Maybe he's (gasp!) read the Bible for himself instead of just listening to a biased preacher.

No...it was said over a specific comment Mike made about God being necessary in order to be an "absolute moral" person. The general consensus was that Mike saying he was Christian was fine, but that one comment about morality smacked of Christian Superiority Complex...

People are mostly upset because he commented that he believed you cannot be absolutely moral without a belief in God and that any atheists that are moral people do so in spite of their beliefs. Discussing this quote is a lot different than screaming "OMG Mike is Xian I dont think hes funny anymore!!!!"

Like the icon says...

And geeze, won't someone think of the children? I mean, if they're going to go about complaining to all Hell about this (no pun intended), the least they can do is misquote Mike properly. They're hardly even trying! And hey, no one's picked up on his Republicanism and Bush-supporting-ism yet! Surely someone wants to denounce him for that, too. Although maybe I just jinxed it, and that wank is still to come. You never can tell these days.

*shakes head* Ah, MST3K fandom, how I long for the days when we just posted nonsensical quotes in order to play Guess the Episode, and complimented Dirk Digital on his lovely icons. (Of which I am using one. The madness, it spreads!) But now even you are not spared from the wank. It's almost beautiful, in a depressing sort of way.

And lo, echoed were the words that caused the biggest MST3K kerfuffle in fandom. On that day God sighed and decided he and the other members of the trinity would sit down and make snarky comments on his work. And it was good.

Aw nooooo! Stay good MST3K! Stay good!

Truth be told, I don't agree with much of what he says at all about religion, morality, or politics. However, those are his opinions, and as MST3K has taught me, he's got a sense of humour in spite of it.

And he "betrayed" the fandom? Bitch, please. He expressed opinions that are unpopular with the fandom, he didn't murder everyone you held dear and let Crow and Servo make snarky comments over of their pleas for mercy.

Maybe I'm biased here, but as a MiSTing oldbie (even if never a BNF*) I'm not sure that our little chunk of fandom ever stayed non-wanky. Hell, we jumped the wank shark in roughly 1999, and even now on the fairly-sedate SVAM messageboards, wank of the mundane, "I'll ask for C&C on my horrible MiSTing and then not take it" vein rages ever onward. I'm aware that MiSTing was always rather wankier than the sedate mainline fandom, but still...

I feel ancient now. Downright creaky.

* In fact, there should probably be some anti-BNF acronym for me, given as I'm a hyper-SVAM-oldbie and people still don't give a damn.

Austenian, aka "Steph" here
I'm severely nauseated by the constant use of the word "wank" and I wonder if people here even KNOW what wank literally means. But the point is, my name is spelled STEF. If you're going to reference me, especially in this sarcastic tone, at least get my name right...

If anyone has been paying attention to Mike interviews over the last, oh, DECADE, this huge revelation about his Christianity is about as astonishing as learning from Paul Winfield's obituary that he was black.

I admit that the Bush voting freaks me out, but I figure the poor man is still shell-shocked from living under the Ventura regime.
