aundromasmith wants everyone in fanficrants to know...

RPF is dangerous.

Choice quote:

There is, however, one aspect of fan fiction which defies this analogy of the fireside community. Real Person Fiction, or RPF for short, instead hearkens up the image of a group of old biddies at the beauty parlor, gossiping over the new person in town, making up imaginary scenarios that could have brought them to their neighborhood. They envision failed romances, humiliations at work, or deep and dark family secrets from which their target is forever running.

In short, RPF is nothing more than a convenient vehicle for lies and conjecture. And while the old biddies at the beauty parlor will accomplish little more than hurt feelings and tarnished reputations, RPF enters a much more dangerous territory.

I could just delete it, I suppose. But I believe in letting people state their opinions, even if I know it's a trainwreck waiting to happen.

Edit: We have pretentious sign.

(Deleted and reposted because of stupid error).

Personally, I think the old biddies are more dangerous. Their gossip is much more likely to get back to the person it relates to. I know I'd rather write RPF about a celebrity than talk about one of my coworkers behind her back.

Can anyone tell me what the hell is supposed to be the "point" of all the anti-RPF rants that come up periodically? I can understand having moral reservations about RPF-- hell, I have them myself.

But what's the point of bitching pointlessly in the same comms again and again, rehashing old arguments? Do the wankers that make them actually think they'll ever cause *even one* dedicated RPF writer or fan to reconsider their stance, just by insulting them?

Her bio:

Growing up under the tender mercies of a former English teacher taught me the necessity of being accurate in one's grammar and usage. Having my school work combed over by this same person taught me that punctuation and spelling were just as important as the previous two.

Upon discovering fan fiction, I found that a number of people were sorely lacking the proper upbringing that I had been privy to.

I seek to enlighten.

ARRRGHH!!!! You SPLIT an F*ING INFINITIVE in a post about BAD GRAMMAR!!!!!!

And what are those, precisely? Do you think she means genes that go off like little light bulbs, but cleverly? Or perhaps she means that original thoughts are themselves made up of genes, that ideas have DNA, too?

Or perhaps she's referring to a new line of designer wankwear, and she's just a shitty speller?

hopefully with the intention of building upon the legends of our day

Hopefully? HOPEFULLY??? She's polishing her knob about how correct her grammar is while she commits the most heinous of adverb abuse? ARGGHGH!!

many people seem adverse to following the links

That's "averse", you moron. Gods, it's amazing the simple things that will trip up a really pretentious snot. Sorry, girlie, but your "education" leaves something to be desired. Next thing you know, she'll be confusing "hid" with "hide".

Yet, the authors (and publishing companies) have little to hid behind if it can be proven otherwise.

*snort* Never mind.

She's not really helping herself with the whole forefathers thing, is she? RPS is more of a mythology than FPS is--stories taken from real events, based on real people (RPS fanon, really, is the mythology, because the actual stories are acknowledged as fiction). If people hadn't been fangirling that dreamy John Chapman two hundred years ago, we wouldn't have Johnny Appleseed today.

Besides, everyone knows Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were the original Harry/Draco.

Geez, she IS pretentious. 7__7 It's like she's flipping all of us fanfic authors the bird in her userinfo.

And, while I DO feel guilty about RPF, and don't like it, I think other people have the right to write it. It's just that...I personally don't want to offend anyone by saying "Famous Person X Likes Boys" when he's as straight as an arrow, or "Famous Person Y Shot His Mother" when he really didn't. (I am also VERY reluctant to write fic for series based of real life or history...I don't mean any disrespect to the dead/living.)

It's a JOKE, a parody. Get. Over. Yourself. Woman.

Oh good god, this is like the C major of wank, it just keeps getting used for EVERYTHING over and over and over again.

I only have issues with RPF/RPS when it's about celebs who really aren't celebs. There have been some cases where pretty small name theatre people have had some written about them and on some level that weirded me out because these are people without PR machines who aren't used to having anything like this happen who are much more likely to be effected by it. But dude, if we're talking about people who are getting written up in the Enquirer, is it really an issue?
