Rice Wank
I was sitting here searching the alt.books.anne-rice newsgroup for something I had lost when my computer keeled a couple of years ago and I didn't do a back up when I realized this newsgroup was perhaps the wankiest usenet group of all between fanfic writers and nonfanfic writers. So, digging about, I found....good old faithful Victoria. Resident troll who sits around and waits for someone to mention the word "fanfiction" or "specs" so she can have the get go. I love Victoria. If not for her, I would not have my daily laughs at the way she hysterically calls fanfic writers a bunch of morons with no life.

Like this poor fella, who idly announced that he was having a chat to debate about fanfic and the Queen of the Damned movie on his site gets jumped.

I always loved how she starts calling people ahole and that fanfic is just idiotic drivel.

There's a host more, but it's too late to dig through so much.

Hey Silver, did you ever share any MOM wankery with these guys, back in the day?

Man, I get sick for a weekend and look what happens. Shiny new journal, all sorts of wanks, and someone made that damn gay parakeet tree into a sock puppet!

*weeps for us all*

I don't believe any MOM wankage has been shared. [info]gairid and I were just saying the other day how it's a shame that Rotoli was deleted, cause those last days were just wankariffic.

That's the thing. It's on Rotoli. If Rotoli was still alive, I would link there because baby...that was good wank and you were queen.

I don't remember being queen. Was I queen and no one told me? Did I fail to notice somehow?

I mean, it was a while back and I guess it's no big deal. I just wish I'd known so I could have enjoyed it at the time. And maybe knighted some people. That would've been cool.

I really don't get Anne Rice. Why does she consider fanfic so terrible? Hell, i'd LOVE if people loved my characters enough to write their own stories about them. Her whole 'my characters are copyrighted, don't mess with them' thing just confuses me.

Well, I've never read any Anne Rice-base fic, but my guess is that it's a hell of a lot better than the unedited crap she's been putting out for the last 7 years.

I've never actually read Anne Rice, but i've heard plenty about her work. I guess people loved her early stuff but as time went on her work kind of turned into crap.

I can't stand it when once great authors let their books come to press looking like some illiterate high school kid wrote them.

It's way funnier and wankier than that. She used to tacitly support fanfic. Her publisher's pages linked to fan websites that included fanfic.

But then she flatly put out a statement that she doesn't allow fan fiction. And the lawyers started bugging people.

But that was around the time she put out Memnoch the Devil, which is when most fans feel like she went off the rails altogether anyway. (It's a very muddled book that posits a new, inconsistent and somewhat hysterical version of Christianity, and the vampire characters were obviously shoehorned in just to make sure the book would find an audience.) And basically it's just been downhill from there.

Best summary of Memnoch ever.

I like to call it, "The Book that Put Me off Anne Rice for Seven Years". Then I discovered fan fiction and all was right with the world again.

Anne Rice and Patricia Morrison are of the school of thought that when fan fiction writers use their characters they are doing it for their own (the fan fiction writers) gain at their expense and because (THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART SO LISTEN UP) fan fiction writers when writing fan fiction are stealing their (Anne and Pat's) souls.

bwah!! Victoria!!! I had totally forgotten about her! I think I should dig out my backup CDs - I'm sure I still have some of her posts.

I used to read abar most heavily back in - 1996/97 (I think), and from what I can remember, it was the spec authors who also carried most of the discussion. The ng went downhill when all the authors went off to the Rotoli boards. Tho sometimes I wish I had read these boards more often. I swear I got my love for flamewars from the VC fandom, tho.

*sniff* Now I'm having a nostalgia attack.

Anyone else remember All My Vampires?

I remember All My Vampires! I used to read Abar too, 98-99. after Anne sicced the sharks on the specwriters I drifted away...talk about WANK...and here's Victoria STILL spouting the same tired crap about fanfic. Best in the thread that Silverhawk posted was her calling someone an 'ahole' when SHE misread the post. Victoria has ALWAYS been wankerific reading. I wonder if Anne's ass is SORE from all the tongue application Victoria graces her with.

And IMHO? A lot of the VC fic I have read is so far superior to AR's later work that *that* is likely the reason she *banned* fanfic using her characters.

WANK WANK WANK!

*wave to Ari cos I remember reading you faithfully...well...still do*

Of course I remember All My Vamps. Dagger of the Mind was what I was trying to find because that's the only thing I have missing when my computer keeled a couple of years ago and I'm trying to find them all again.

I used to read abar, too around 1996 but I was a quiet lurker who posted comments every so often. It did die after the writers left but Victoria always kept it going. Sometimes I take a spin just to see if she's jumping someone but she's been rather quiet of late also.

I was trying to find that big long thread that came up recently when she claimed she was the one who sent the law of the land out amongst us. But couldn't. *shrug* Victoria was Queen Wank. Too bad most of the really good wank is now deleted from Rotoli.

Here's my absolute favorite AR wank, from her site.

A fan wrote: "MEMNOCH THE DEVIL was like a rich dessert after reading Dante and Milton for a comparative literature course. Thank you for an intelligent and provoking novel."

Anne responded: "I don't mind being the dessert course, but I'm just as serious, and I have just as many calories as Dante and Milton! So, I want to be just as fattening, and just as significant."

Uh-huh.

I was reading her post and I got to the IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ANNE ON "FAN FICTION", so I thought yeah yeah, whatever. But then that same IMPORTANT MESSAGE was there a second time, and I was like Wow! It's in there twice. That's totally convincing!

Same thing happened when she wrote "Hahahahaha. You're kidding, right?" That repetition thing just makes me see the light every time. I am in awe.

Yeah. After all, Lestat/Louis sex is so much more ridiculous and insulting than prepubescent!Armand/Marius.
