FoxTrot mathwank!
I get the FoxTrot feed on my LJ, and this morning, this comic was posted. I shrugged as I'm not much for mat on my best days, and 7:30 this morning certainly wasn't one of those. But anyway, it shortly descends into wankiness about the math.

There is a Heinlein quote, and realadrian decides to throw their mathematical weight around here. Accusations of illogical behaviour, stupidity, and inaccurate mathematics abound.

It has been going on all afternoon, and promises to keep growing (exponentially perhaps...*g*).

(it's my first wank... be gentle.)

I want to strangle that guy, but only because I know someone just like him.

What good does it do to your life when you have won however-many math championships, but you fail to realize that utterances like "Of course, often I imply things because I think that people will get what I mean" and "If I made it in a maths forum, then maybe it would have worked. For some reason, I thought that there would be a lot of maths geeks in here. Instead, we have a lot of people who fake and pretend that they know maths, when they don't" are wanky like hell and bound to get people to think you're an arrogant moron?

Word. Because that's what people read the "Fox Trot" feed for, mathematic discussion!

Why, I heard that over in the "Far Side" feed, they discuss Plato! The debate over what would be the ideal form of "Cow" was pretty heated, let me tell you.

Hobbes: Political philosopher who posited a social contract form of government based on the idea that it's in everyone's best interests to submit to a single higher authority rather than exist in an anarchic state of nature, which inevitably leads to a state of war. This would work because according to Hobbes, human beings are inherently selfish and will naturally do what's in their best interests.

Isn't fandom_wank edukashonal?

I give props to the voice of reason. Some people in the thread don't seem to understand that a) not everyone is a math genius, and 2) it's a comic strip. You get a chuckle from it, or not, and move on.

Oh, you have no idea. This kind of thing happens routinely at fox trot. Half of the jokes in general spark wank, and math jokes rarely pass without casualties.

The fact there wasn't a real statistics joke in this strip (unlike the pi joke from a couple months ago) and it *still* sparked a math/statistics wank is a true testament to their wankiness. We ought to start making digital plaques...

Come to think of it, why isn't there an anual wank award? It would be a great to do along with the Oscars-- best leading male wanker, best supporting male (i.e. sockpuppet), best original wank... we could even come up with technical awards...

Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human.
At best he is a tolerable subhuman who has learned to wear shoes,
bathe and not make messes in the house.
--Lazarus Long, "Time Enough for Love", (Robert A. Heinlein)

Well, jeez. Now I'm not even HUMAN. It's truly amazing, the things you can learn about yourself from higher-order human beings such as these.

Perhaps we should've thought of the consequences of deriving someone of their ignorance-derived bliss. How can we live with ourselves, now?

Suppose Heinlein has any quotable quotes about "anyone who cannot cope with the english language?"

I'm with the guy who said, "It's a fucking comic strip."

Especially concerning the first comment from realadrian in this thread. I love that he gave this serious analysis of Paige's intent following an obvious joke, and then proceeds to flame dantesdad for not reading the comments "properly," when dantesdad's response, apart from being a joke, is not directed at anyone in particular.

He could have done a lot better though. What will happen when his parents find out, and he has to pay the money back?

That is the problem when you only have 1 person in the sample size.

That just kills me.

The really amusing part is the NCAA Men's basketball tournament actually has 64 games, not 63. (A few years ago they expanded the field to 65.)

So, not only are they wanking about math, but they're wanking while using the wrong numbers. ;)

(Unless, of course, they're talking about the women's tournament, which still has 64 teams and consists of 63 games. In which case I'll just slink into the corner.)

Do people actually write letters to Bill Amend, filled with subject-based wankery such as this? I know that Gary Larson used to get questions about some of his more obtuse comics.

If so, what does he say? What can one say?

"Good for you, but you're still a loser."

Heh, I remember in the 'Prehistory of the Far Side' reading some of the comments he'd get after a particularly puzzling or 'offensive' strip.

I would really love to know what Amend would say about stuff like this, but I have a feeling you're pretty on the mark there (even if he doesn't say it, I bet he thinks it!)

I don't get that math genius boy has any particular point. Uh, yeah, the probability isn't 1/2^63 (or whatever) because some teams are stronger than others. If the odds aren't 50-50 for any particular team, you just have to adjust the 1/2 part. If you usually can guess the outcome of 2/3 tournament games, rather than 1/2, then the probability for you to guess all of them would be 2/3^63. Even if you can guess 5/6 correctly, by the time you do the ^63 part you're still going to get a lot of zeros after the decimal place.

This is the funniest thing I've ever seen. It's a comic strip but all the math professors (they have to be wearing white laboratory coats) are in an arguement with their scientific calculators and pocket protectors. This is like a Far Side comic.
