Because Sex Offenders are people too!
http://www.livejournal.com/community/metaquotes/837409.html

Someone posts a quote relating to the incident where Catholic schoolgirls beat the crap out of the guy who flashing and harassing them.

Things are cool till Stormsigma jumps in pointing out how awful it was for those girls to stand up for themselves, and what about the flasher?

[He has some good points, to bad he really doesn't do a good job of presenting them though.]

EDIT: I take back the last part, he's either a complete ass or really sucks at making jokes: http://www.livejournal.com/community/metaquotes/837409.html?thread=2346529#t2346529

Enjoy!

Wow, I just got finished reading that, and it shows up here.

The problem was basically that the quoter said the guy was beaten within an inch of his life, when he only had minor injuries. They were pretty non-wanky about it, I thought.

True, I was a bit disappointed.

Still his whole 'Oh think of the flasher' bit and that apparently he didn't read the article was wanky to me.

Yes, a guy who flashes Catholic girls and someone who accidently shortchanges someone aren't exactly on the same level.

Wow. This is the first time anything I've been involved with has been wanked. I feel all special.

And he does have some good points, though I still feel no sympathy for the flasher.

To bad their drowned out by his asshatnish.

Yes there is a difference between exposing yourself and giving someone the right change, and just because he didn't psychically harm the girls doesn't he couldn't or wouldn't.

I love how he'd say 'now I'm not defending the guy' and then go on to rationalize his behavior.

Oops.

Wonder what he'd have made of my school - the 1st XI hockey team got our flasher. With hockey sticks. I never did find out how badly they beat him up, but it never got police attention, either for the flasher or them, but he never came back.

Perhaps it's strict disciplinarian schools that bring the vigilante out in people.

Dude, the hockey team at my boarding school did the same thing! We had some guy sneaking into the freshman girls dorm's basement to steal their underwear - he was seen and chased a few times, but one very happy day, he was discovered by about half the hockey team as they were walking to practice. Let me add that my school was infamous for recruiting 16 year old "freshman" Canadian youth hockey players, so when I say that that loser had no chance, I mean it. To this day, the memory makes me smile. The police later discovered hundreds of pairs of underwear at his house, most of which bore laundry tags with girls names on them. While I normally don't espouse violence, I thought this was a probably a worthwile exception.

Eh. I don't think Stormsigma was all that wanky. There's nothing wrong with playing Devil's advocate, and I thought he did so an admirably restrained way. And in all honesty, I don't think that what those girls did was brilliant. Some states and provinces, such as mine, don't have defence laws, meaning that even if someone starts an altercation with you, should you fight back, you're not necessarily protected by the law. Granted, if someone walks up to you and starts clubbing you over the head and you kick him in the shins to get away, I doubt any reasonable prosecutor would charge you, but the possibility remains. Not only could those girls have left themselves open to prosecution, I'd love to be defence counsel for the flasher. Who's going to want to impose any real sentence on the guy now -- he's just been given "home-grown" justice, right?

Then there's the message that the incident sends to the girls and all citizens. I find child molesters as evil and disgusting as the next person, but I'm not comfortable with denying a particular class of offenders rights. So it's okay to beat up perpetrators of sexually based crimes. Okay. Then what? The perpetrators of drug related murders as well, since those are also heinous, typically brutal, and are arguably committed for no real gain and motive other than the protection or gain of assets? Then all murderers in general? All rapists? Anyone convicted of child abuse or neglect? It's 'a slippery slope,' and I say this as someone training to be a prosecutor. The criminal justice system -- however flawed it may be -- is supposed to protect everyone's rights, and for citizens to deem a certain class of peoples' rights not worth protecting and then to exercise vigilante justice is to rip out the foundation of the system, leaving us with a society in which each member has and acts on his own subjective views on 'right' and 'wrong' and 'appropriate punishment.' While I don't feel terribly sorry for or sympathetic toward the flasher and his plight, I am certainly concerned about the kind of message this sends to the girls and their community. Victims' rights should not come at the exploitation of or, in this case, utter disregard for, the rights of the accused.

. . . am shutting up now.

Considering this is a fairly old news story and I haven't heard of any 'vigilante justice groups' forming because of it I wouldn't be too worried.

As for the message I think it's more of a 'stand up for yourself' then a 'go beat up that guy over there' one.

I do find it odd that both you and Stormsigma seem to place more value on the flasher's rights then the girls. Don't they have a right to be able to go to and from school in piece?

And shouldn't the fact that this wasn't a first time offense but part of long history of harassment count for something?

This wasn't some guy who got locked out in his robe and was jumped by rabid school girls, this was someone who made a nuisance of himself and had been acting in a inappropriate manner for a while.

Was what the girls did the best solution? No probably not, but it wasn't a random act of cruelty either.

Sorry but the flasher is not the victim in this case.

[I'm not a lawyer though so I don't know a darn thing about the legalities of the case.]

As I said above, if s guy got in front of you and whipped his wang out, how the hell are going to know whether or not he whipped it out because he's going to rape you? You groin-kick first and ask questions later.

Sadly, when you get flashed, your mind isn't the quickest of coming up with clever things to do. I've been flashed before, so I don't particularly feel any much sympathy for the flasher.

While beating the guy may have been over the line, "stormsigma" is making it sound like they should've just stood there and screamed. ;P Honestly, a lawsuit?! What's more illegal-flashing schoolgirls or beating up an offender? I'd think the former.

Go you!

The more I read the more chauvinistic Stormsigma seems. Not only is putting the rights of the flasher above those of the victims he's unable to understand why someone whipping it out might cause another person to be frighted or distressed.

He doesn't seem to understand that the penis is NOT the most wonderful body part ever made, and believe it or not most women aren't gonna fall to their knees in organismic bliss at the sheer joy of seeing one, especially if no gave them a choice in the matter.

I mean the girls formed a gang and chased him down, I don't think they would do that if they weren't truly upset and frightened.

[For me the big question is where were the cops and why didn't they do anything before?]
