Over in Feminist_Rage, someone posted about how she doesn't get why women order skim milk/claim they're fat

And then...Milk=Rape! OMG!

...good lord. This boggles the mind.

(and yes, I had to throw in my own mind about how yes, a matricial society *would* and *did* domesticate animals, but it will probably be ignored)

Oh lordy. I wish I lived as well as some of the dairy cattle on my uncle's farm. Three guaranteed meals a day, pleasant company, shelter when it rains, not a worry in the world.

Milk = Rape is just silly. You think a cow consents when a bull gets her in his sight? Someone needs to spend some time with cattle, or at least watch Animal Planet occassionally.

By that logic bread = rape, too. Forcable pollination of wheat stalks to produce seeds, so they can be ground up for people to eat!! OMG! The injustice! Won't someone think of the plants?!

This reminds me of the dumb post on feminist_fatale where this guy stated that feminists (assuming that all feminists were pro-choice) were hypocrites if they neutered their pets.

And for the record, I drink 1 or 2 percent milk. Tastes just as good and has less fat without being watery. :-)

I would like to call for a feminist moratorium on this fucking "patriarchy" bullshit. As a concept and an explanation for the general tides of culture it's fine, but I am so damn sick of hearing 'don't buy into the patriarchy' anytime I want to do something, change something about myself, or interact with men. And I am more than sick and tired of hearing "the patriarchy made me..." when the truth is that said person is going with the flow.

The patriarchy didn't make me study psychology instead of engineering, my interests did. The patriarchy doesn't make me put on makeup, I like the way I can change my features using it. The patriarchy doesn't make me want to loose weight, my desire to move easier, move faster, be stronger, and match up to my internal image of myself when I was thin does.

Is it just me, or is "the patriarchy" an excuse to feel good about oneself by trumping something that doesn't really exist anymore? Either that, or exist as a reason for why idiots can't get ahead in the world? Fuck the patriarchy.

You know, why does everyone automatically assume that if you're trying to lose weight or stay light, it's because you're giving into the "male patriarchy" or that you have body image problems?

I'm sorry, but being fat is bad. Not because it's ugly (I think a person can be attractive no matter what weight they are), but because it's unhealthy. There are so many diseases that can be caused by obesity. In one side of my family alone, there's diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, heart attacks, lupus, strokes, fibromyalgia, and other autoimmune diseases that are more likely to be contracted if you're overwegiht. Being overweight is bad on your joints, makes your blood pressure higher, and were you to be in a car accident or some other type of accident, you have more of a chance of surviving if you're in good physical shape than if you're overweight. (I know of a kid from my old high school that survived a quad accident only because he was in good physical shape. He would have had his arm torn ought had he not had such strong muscles holding his body together).

Fat does not equal ugly, but it does not equal healthy either.

I'll keep drinking my skim milk, thank you very much, and munching on my salad topped with tofu. I don't want to get sick and die when I'm 45.

Skim milk froths better than whole milk. If you really want a frothy latte, it's worth using the skim milk to get more froth. I forget why.

I do think a big part of the problem here is that too many people have skinny/fat as boolean proposition. You are either Skinny (defined cuturally by somewhat underweight endomorphs who are our models and actresses) or Fat (defined as everything else). People who merely have hips and breasts and whose ribs do not show do not necessarily need to beat themselves up for being "fat" and it would be nice if societal expectations did not pressure them into it. On the other hand, people (like myself) who carry enough excess weight to make a whole other person, have an actual health issue which needs to be addressed regardless of personal attractiveness issues.

[Actually, that's not true. I've recently dropped about 75 lbs, and now only need to lose half a person, but my point stands. If I want to live past age 60, I need to do something about this (based on family medical history).]

Controlling Obesity and Anyone Who's Not Emaciated Is Fat are actually two separate issues and need to not be conflated.
