In the name of the moon, I will wank on you!
In the long tradition of great sentai kerfuffles (Nope, not hentai. The only porn here is in the minds of fans from seeing attacks requiring the actors to contort their bodies in strange ways) the Sailor Moon live action drama is becoming a rapidly growing fad for English-speaking audiences who enjoyed the manga, anime, or just find it an entertaining trainwreck from the starting Engrish-riddled lyrics to the plushie guardians.

The only problem is that they're not getting their weekly fix of subtitled Sailor Moon. The subbers of TV-Nihon seemed to have hit a snag for three weeks and people in the forums complain.

TV-Nihon replies with the old favorite, "if you complain about your toys don't think we won't take them away from you!"

KingRanger:"ADDITION TO YOU PEOPLE THAT CAN NOT READ: IT IS NOT OUT YET,I SAID WHEN WHEN IT IS OUT. MAYBE ALL CAPS WILL GET YOUR ATTENTION HELLO PEOPLE WHEN DO YOU KNOW WHAT WHEN IS?"

Because nothing gets the point across like caps and unclear language. When is when? Is it when now? Are we when yet?

There's also a lovely plea of brotherhood and bonding as KingRanger explains the delay:

"Well ladies and gents,we were going to add the Sailor Moon Episode 22 BT up on monday. But thanks to a person going by the nick thatdog, it won't be on bt at all. Or until we feel like it. You see we asked that people hold off putting it up on other bt pages and just come to the channel to download and talk about it,seems that is just to hard for some people. thatdog decided to be a prick, talk to him if you want to know why no bt of ep22 anytime soon."

Ooh, mob mentality. But there is another spokesperson from TV-Nihon to counterbalance KingRanger's brand of tact.

"wow. Did anyone ever think that maybe we simply just can't put it up for 3 weeks? What an amazing thought.

I love how people just keep hating us from their little forums (Especially ones that you have to pay 5 dollars to even view...if that's not elitist I don't know what is.)

There won't be any BT's for 3 weeks because we simply can't do BT for 3 weeks. That means we'll continue to release stuff instead of making everyone wait. We could just be dicks and not release anything for 3 weeks...but we don't want to be dicks.

So stop with the insults, death threats, and stupid bullshit. Grow up. Get mIRC. Get the file. Get happy.

No, BT does not work for everyone. No, IRC does not work for everyone. We're doing what we can to get these episodes out in a timely manner.

However, if I see anyone BTing our episodes I will find you, hunt you down and rip out your pubic hair. I'm not KingRanger. I'm Cyberdramon. Get it right when you call me an asshole.

Thanks ^_^"

Enter the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon community.

Someone posts the link.

The reactions vary, but pretty much all are understanding if not a little bitter. Most say that they're doing it for free and such, so any delays are forgiven. Others wonder if that means they can get away with pulling out pubic hairs, like when elvenmoon asks the main question:

"But why are they so ANGRY that people are distributing the episodes on BT? That's what I don't get :/"

Here we get some Goodwin action.

Tenchichan compares them to something worse than Nazis: "That's so wrong, it goes against the spirit of fansubbing altogether. The purpose is to distribute things that people would not be able to see otherwise, not to make money. Last time I checked TV-Nihon didn't own the rights to Sailor Moon, therefore they've got no buisiness telling people how to distribute, even if they were the ones to subtitle it.
It's just so ironic really, I mean they have absolutely no right to distribute it in the first place really, and then they go and try to tighten their grip like they're the RIAA or something." (Emphasis mine)

Dokidokidoki goes to bat for the subbers: "It's their fansubs, they can do whatever the hell they want with it. If you don't like it, don't download it. If PGSM is such a huge community that someone else will pick up fansubbing as well, then wait for them. If you don't like the way they do things, well, there's nothing you can do about it except complain and complain which again will do nothing."

Things like the age old traditions of fansubbing is brought in. Nettiquette is discussed in how much leeway you get in sniping at either party. And how much you can charge for it.

Caloris: "That whole thing on the liveactionsailormoon yahoo group about TVN going out and flaming anyone else who would dare to want to distro the subs on CD/DVD at cost. And now (from my understanding), they'll hunt you down and flame you unless they appove how much you sell the CDs for.
um... what? Who are they to decide how much "at cost" is?"

Others respond with the age-old "it's from the goodness of their hearts that we even started to love the series!"

Galoria brings up the *other* group that was involved in an older wank for daring to make their sub a parody: "Originally, a different group subbed PGSM all together and it wasn't until the 5th episode or so that Tv-Nihon really got onto the scene. So, no, it wasn't thanks to them. They just jumped on the bandwagon. Which, in my mind, makes them even less capable of completely insulting everybody they've ever tried to work for."

Dokidokidoki: "But the difference is that Tv-Nihon is still subbing the episodes. The other group you're talking about has apparently stopped. If it weren't for TV-Nihon, most of PGSM fans wouldn't even know past Act 5. So yes, it is thanks to them that fans are addicted to the show as they are now. Past Act 5, at least."

Other gems include disagreements of age and computer savvy, personal call-outs, and general questioning of what would Donald Trump do?

Here is the whole thread. 100 posts and counting.

ETA: Mochibuni called it! "Meh, this is getting so wanky. *looks around for Fandom Wank people*" Someone give them a cupie doll.

Donald Trump: He's like Jesus, in a way. Except that he'd probably cut out the middleman and take the 30 pieces of silver for himself. Bless.

I'll never forgive Trump mainly because his stupid reality show caused one of my fave shows to get another time slot change just when I was getting back into my grove.

But I do dislike Tv-Nihon's attitude and I'll say that openly. (Like anyone cares.)

How to de-scare IRC in three easy steps
[info]eiviiaru
2004-03-16 10:32 pm UTC (link)
I've introduced a few of my friends to IRC, and I have some tips to make it all a little less scary:

1) Start small: find a relatively small, welcoming channel. (Hard to do for fansubbing stuff, but bear with me.) About half of all IRC-fear situations come from joining a huge channel full of asshats.
2) Get acquainted with the very basic IRC commands -- there aren't many, and this isn't hard. If you're able to do the most basic IRC functions (join and part channels, quit, change your nickname, send personal messages, pose) you'll at least be able to fake knowing enough to get by.
3) Have an IRC-knowledgeable friend standing by, either on IRC or otherwise, to help you out. (It helps if your first channel is one your friend frequents, too.)

This has been your moment of attempt-at-constructive-content for this wank.

Whee, I love that show. It's very much like all those movies in which Godzilla gets to fight off an alien invasion; utterly misconcieved on every level you can think of, and yet either in spite of or because of that (hard to tell which), unspeakably entertaining. Long live live-action Sailormoon!

They had me at hello with the secret karaoke bar and Senshi hideout at Motoki's. And the infamous triple date episode.

Oh, and the nifty rubber-suited youma. The 'let's go and destroy everything that has some relation to a princess' youma was chilling in a very cool sort of way.

I love it for the trainwreck that is the series. Timing the fights to an idol's song, the plushie Luna being the most serious actor, and the fact that ever since I saw the parody line of "I'm going to yuri you up" Usagi/Ami has been the most canon crack pairing since the OMG-they're-cousins?! dub.

I need to get some sentai icons to keep Abe Hiroshi and his distant torrid past as a sentai actor company.

I know, and it doesn't help that every time something happens to Usagi, Ami's the most upset, and they always zoom in on her face.

I need to get some sentai icons to keep Abe Hiroshi and his distant torrid past as a sentai actor company.

One of the reasons I have always skirted the edges of anime fandom was that I absolutely did not want to deal with fansub distribution. Fansubbers perform a great service for little reward, but until the miracle of downloading, it was a bigger minefield of wank than it is today. No. No. No. Not gonna do it.

Essentially yes. Although "live action" and "anime" kind of contradict each other. ^_-

The L-A Sailor Moon is currently being aired in Japan, and TV Nihon is basically recording the episodes, sticking subtitles on them, and distributing them. Since I didn't read the actual wank, I have no clue if they're distributing via IRC, BitTorrent and/or similar programs, or the old fashioned way (videotapes/video cd/etc.).

Basically the wank comes down to IRC being a very difficult program to use and find files on, where lots of people have been banned for giving it the cursory "VCR instruction" skim, so lots of problems arise. BitTorrent is a lot easier but TV-Nihon doesn't like people spreading it to BitTorrent without their say so and therein lies the kerfuffle.

It's an American thing. I forget what the initials parse as, but it has to do with destribution of media, especially music CDs and cassette tapes (people still buy those?). They're the group that's coming down the hardest on p2p sharing of mp3s in the Us lately.

I think.
