Is Alan coming for the complimentary breakfast or the cheap coffee??
See Harry Potter fans. See Harry Potter fans plan a conference. No, not the well known Nimbus 2005 being put on by the fandom bigwigs. I'm talking about a con being put on by a relatively obscure group of people who are claiming that:

A. Alan Rickman has agreed to come to the Travelodge in Florida to meet and greet them.
B. Dan Radcliffe and Tom Felton will probably come because they offered to take them to Disney world.

They are calling this conference Escape From Azkaban. (They are NAGOTAING PEEPLE So PLez Stop Telling them they will be SOOED!!!!!)

***Please note the gambling room and slash panels.*

When people mention that WB might not like some of their ideas and how they are representing themselves and the pics of Dan Radcliffe all over their conference LJ and their website (which has since been removed), one of the organizers goes on the defensive.

My first reaction to this was that this must be some kids. Sadly, this isn't the case as the organizers seem to all be over 20.

Thanks to an anon commenter in [info]potter_wank's previous wank for bringing this to my attention.

Anyone else think this is wanky? My first wank, please be gentle.

They have now deleted their LJ community. This makes me think it might be another Victoria Bitter scam.

Oh. Right. I can so see Alan Rickman just meandering into a TravelLodge to do a con.

Why does this just reek of a copycat of the whole Victoria Bitter thing?

I know of one con that took place at a dinky motel and featured a guest who came for his plane ticket and room, because he was amused by the idea of a weekend in New Jersey and was amazed that he had American fans. There were maybe 50 attendees, and everyone had a lovely time.

This is the only time I have ever heard of something like this actually working.

The thing I find most interesting, ohcarolina, is that you credit this wank to an anonymous comment received from potters_wank, but I looked and the detailed info; potters_wank has never received a comment. And the only visable entry has nothing to do with this topic (which really, is quite stupid as far as wanks go...I'm glad you at least had the intelligence to start small). The other entry is friended, but the only friends listed are communities.

Speaking as a Floridiot...
[info]redina
2004-03-16 06:47 am UTC (link)
I'm surprised they didn't try scheduling it on Disney World's Gay Pride Day. {chuckle} I suspect the PR junkets for POA would've blessedly prevented that.

Travelodge? First [and only] time I attended an actor/fan meeting was the last Weekend on the Promenade, a gathering of actor fanclubs. I believe the convention was held at the Burbank Hilton... Heh, and apparently, a group of Abe Lincoln impersonators was there too. They certainly surprised me. {g}

As to this event occurring at the end of July, I'm guessing they've been advised by at least one Floridian, Heidi of FA. If you're lucky, the temperatures may be between 84^F-88^F. If you're unlucky, it'll be raining (summer rains) *and* between 84^F-88^F, which makes it feel like 95^F-100^F from humidity.

Hm, toasty.

Sorry, I just don't see this happening. As someone pointed out, actors/actresses may do things for charity but not just for a random fan gathering that'll probably be small. There's always the possibility for exceptions but they're rare and far between.

If they could make it a charity event and bump up the admission prices (money going to a charity *and* can prove it'll go to a charity), then the chances might be better. Charge for such things like signings and ask WB's TPTB if they might consider donating items for a charity auction (even such things like posters and promo items). Do a bit of research and see what charities the actors/actresses had favoured in the past.

Unfortunately, the HP fandom deals with many who can't afford this. Every time I had attended slash conventions like Escapade (http://www.escapadecon.net - note the attendance fees are at least $65-75 which is close to the 'average' for slash cons), most of the attendees were over twenty-five... Yet, this con always sells out and has to form a 'wait list'.

Sure, fans can form a gathering but getting the actors... {shakes head} I wouldn't bet on it.

Not wanky... just poorly planned.

Oh sweet chrsit, please don't let these people near the actors. Especially the underaged actors, who should not have to know that crazy people are imagining them fucking each other. (Now I like my RPS, but I also know it has fuck all to do with the real people, and should never come near them.)
But at some point in this girl's comments, someone suggested "luring" Dan to the conference by showing him a naked picture of Draco. She seemed to like the idea, if "I'll try it!" is any indication. That's not good.
People who confuse their fantasies with reality are embarassing and vaguely creepy, most of the time. But when we're talking about confusing your fantasy with the life of a 14 year old, that becomes downright terrifying.
Please, someone slap some sense into these people. Now. Because this could get ugly.

Plus, Alan Rickman at the Travelodge! Can't you just see it? Surely he's attend just for the chance to win a prize valued at $5,000. I mean $5,000 that's like... 2 whole pounds, british, right?

I share because I care. Here's what Chibimono just posted to her own LJ:

Ladies and gentlemen,
It seems as if Project EFA04 is being wanked, and I am the target.

I say, enjoy yourselves. Because obviously, you don't seem to realize that this is a personal journal in which I am posting, and I can say whatever I please here. If you have a problem, you don't have to continue reading. Yet, you are nitpicking everything I say. Obviously, you all don't know me very well and you don't know a damn thing about joking. If you knew me, you would take my comments in my LJ with a grain of salt. I'm a person that jokes constantly and my posts are here for laughs.

If you all feel like I really am some sort of child molesting pedophile or a liar, then I say go wank. Wank to your heart's content.

If you don't want to show up for the convention, that is fine. We, on the planning team, are not pressuring you all to be there. This convention was originally to be nothing more than a small get together of fans, but at the last minute, it has escalated into something more, thus the reason for the geocities webpage right now. We are still in the process of working on many events, panels, and guests, as well as relocating the convention to a bigger venue. We have talked to Warner Bros. and we do have a letter of permission being sent to us. We are also working on making this an even to raise for charities, the two in particular at the moment that we would like to support are The Demelza House and Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc.

Say what you will about me, and wank all you want about my LJ... But when it comes down to the Con report, we will see...

Thank you for your time. You may go waste the rest of it elsewhere.

Isn't this a little early in the season for re-runs?

Please tell me this is either (a) a scam of some kind or (b) a joke.

Mind you, having said that, I've never quite understood why HP fans have to have WB's and Christopher Little's permission to run a convention when no other concom that I've ever been involved with or heard of have bothered to contact the copyright holder before running their events. So far, none (that I know of) have been sued. I admit it, I'm curious, why is this fandom so different?

Yanno, Orlando isn't all that far from where I live(about 6-8 hours) and yet I would balk at even thinking of going to this convention. I have a feeling that it will FLOP massively.

Maybe a hurricane would help! heh.
