"Therapy realy does help in learning to disagree civilly"
Okay, is it possible to be a fan of cats? A Cat Fan, if you will? I hope so, because otherwise this is a tad off-topic.

Off in the primordial land of Usenet, in a newsgroup dedicated to the proper care and treatment of cats (rec.pets.cats), a minor war is being waged. The topic is epic, for nothing less then the life and sanity of pet cats is under debate. According to CVT 1025, all cats should be indoor cats. To quote: "There is NO...I repeat....NO NO NO valid reason to allow your cat outside." She (and I assume it's a she, for reasons which are probably facetious) gives several reasons for her point of view, and then makes it clear that people who allow their beloved kitties time to roam outside should not be pet owners at all.

All is well in this little fiefdom of demagoguery, until it is pointed out by a user named Tracy that this is, unfortunately, a little extreme. Tracy gives examples of the idyllic lives of her own cats, and suggests that perhaps cats might actually be happier outside. CVT 1025, however, will not have it. She promises dire things to Tracy's cats. This prompts the following reply by Tracy:

If you want to have a reasonable conversation about indoor/outdoor
cats, then have one.

Don't repeat idle premonitions of doom and vague threats over and over
again.

I was trying to be sympathetic to your obvious emotionalism due to
your work and it's impact on you, but redundant comments and the
annoying use of capital letters is working down that sympathy rapidly.

By all means, keep your cats inside if that's what you feel is the
right thing to do. But have some respect for others who have come to
the conclusion that it isn't the right thing to do in their individual
situations for their cats.

Therapy realy does help in learning to disagree civilly if this is a
problem for you..

The entire thread is v.v. satisfing, and not burdensomely long (as some of the bigger Usenet flamewars tend to be). You can find the entire discussion here. Be sure not to miss the "my cats are smarter then yours" exchange.

Remember! The power to deserve a pet cat lies with you!

Ah, that's a nice compact wank. No complicated backstory, or 500 links to click through. The individually wrapped cheese-slice of wank.

And WTF? You shouldn't let your cats out because baaaaad things will happen to them? Why did no one tell me? Good grief! I let my kids out of the house! They might get hit by a car, or come into contact with germs. I must away and buy kid-sized safety bubbles.

But aren't your cats way more important to you than your kids!

If they aren't than you aren't a true cat lover.

Hrm, guess i'm the only one but i don't think cats should be let outside either, at least not without supervision. They can get run over, they can get mauled by dogs, they can catch diseases. And where i live, farmers will shoot them if they get near their poultry. I really don't see not letting your kids outside as a valid analogy to this.

I feel kind of out of place as a dog owner. Like [info]phosfate, I think that depending on where you live, letting your cats out can be, I don't know, a bad thing. Just because they're happy doing it doesn't mean it's necessarily the best thing for them. My dog likes to eat the ends of my pocky sticks, but that doesn't mean they're good for him. My mother's dog is a border collie and likes to herd things. Like cars. She would be happier trying to herd things because that's what she's bred to do, but in the absense of any sheep we're sure as fuck not going to let her outside to snap at tires. Just because your cat wants to be outside gettin' it on with the ladies and yowling under my window at three in the morning doesn't mean he won't be run over, abused, picked up by the animal shelter, or die of an easily preventable disease that you could have taken care of if he had been able to come home.

(I'm reminded of the time one of my friends wailed about how her cat hadn't come home yet wah wah wah I asked if he had a collar in case someone picked him up, to which the answer was "no, he hates collars!" Whatever, genius.)

/waaaaaaaaaaaaaaank!

The thing that amuses me about this wank is that, in our area, if you love your cat, you keep it indoors. Feline HIV and Feline Leukemia run rampant and are usually not only fatal but extremely contagious. The average lifespan of a cat allowed outdoors to frolic (not to live, having a home with food and shelter) is about two years max - and it'll happily infect most other cats it comes into contact with.

I grew up in the country, wherein you let your cats inside if it was nighttime or 40 below, and otherwise they mostly lived in the barn. I like being able to let my cat come and go as he pleases, but after watching one die horribly from something that could have been prevented had I known this area was disease riddled (and having the entire process cost me a truly obscene amount of money), I'd have to argue for indoor cats.

... again depending upon where you live.

however, in general, and I've done research on this...cats that live outside have an average lifespan of 3-5 years. Indoor cats can live up to 20 years or more

See, here she would be comparing TWO THINGS THAT ARE NOT THE SAME. The first is an average, the second is a maximum. Two different things. Not the same.

{weeps at the abuse of statistics}

When we bought our house, the main criteria for choosing it was that it was in a very quiet cul de sac where the cats would be able to play outside safely. Oh, and also that there was a secure garage for the motorbikes. And a room to keep the books in. Somewhere a long way back in fourth place, came us.

At the time, the denizens were into posting as if their cats were talking to each other, and apparently their cats all spoke baby talk. It was pretty wanky then, too. I think that's one of the universal constants: death, taxes, and wank.

As someone who's lived with outdoor cats and indoor cats, I can say that neither way is wrong and it all depends on where you live. In the city, I know people who have no choice but to keep their cats inside, because some parents have told their (allergic kids) to stone the cat to death if they see them so they don't get sick.

But as for the "longer-life if they're inside" line? Bitch, please. I've seen more overweight and under-exercised cats die than I've seen barn cats suddenly drop dead. And, as heartless at it sounds, at least the barn cats have the good grace to go out into the woods and die so they just 'disappear' one day and never come home. Some people prefer to have a body to bury, but personally, it's better to remember them as they were alive, and not as a stiff body in a Pepsi box in the ground.

Personal Experience
[info]arielchan
2004-03-18 12:11 am UTC (link)
When I was born, my parents already had a kitty, a mean old nuetered tom named Tuffy, who lived a very long time as an indoor/outdoor cat.

When I was five, my parents got me my first cat. Since then I have had seven or eight fully grown cats and about 60 kittens that we gave away in all.

My cats have been primarily outdoors since I was seven. We don't really do vets, either. We get them their shots every year and that's it. Dad says "cats are a dime a dozen" which is true, since one can always get a free kitten in the summer.

I've never had a problem with the risks to outdoor cats. I've had cats die of feline lukemia, go blind from having ants in their eyes, get shot, and get eaten by dobermans. I've accepted the fact that cats don't live long and that's just the way it goes.

These people, in my opinion, should face facts: people die, as do cats. However, cats have about a tenth of the average lifespan of humans. If you have cats, you're going to see them die no matter what. Deal.

(Also, collars are simply not effective tracking and claiming for outdoor cats. I've bought my cats numerous collars, all of which have been slipped, and "unslippable" harnesses, which they broke out of.)

All my cats were indoor / outdoor cats when I was young, and they lived 10 - 15 years each. Healthy and happy, every one.

The first totally indoor cat I had died of a tumour on her tongue when she was eight. Stats mean shit.

And speaking of shit...my city put a really tough cat bylaw into effect five years ago to reduce the aggravation people had because of cats crapping in flower beds, etc. Of course, the fines were so high people kept their cats inside. At the time, I predicted that it would have an effect on the rodent population, and I was mocked soundly by all and sundry for thinking that all the cats out on the streets actually controlled mice, because after all we lived in the city and there ARE no mice in the city, right?

This year, at least a quarter of the people I know have mice in their garages or their houses. Eating through their walls, crapping in their kitchen cupboards, making nests in their clothes. Welcome to a world without outdoor cats, people. Personally I'd rather find cat crap in my garden than mouse crap in my food, but hey...to each their own.

If you are going to let your cats outside then for god's sake get them spayed or neutered. I own five dogs, two cats and all are spayed. The cats are indoor/outdoor cats, which means at least for them, every few weeks they go outside to lay about on the sidewalk or patio furniture. Seeing cats outside doesn't irritate me.

What irritates me the most are the numerous owners that allow their cats to roam without first taking them to the local animal clinic to be neutered or spayed. If you are going to let them out to roam at least make sure that they are not contributing the excessive pet population.

My sister got a little kitten. Who wanted to be an outdoor cat. So my parents got a little kitty door and everything so that she could be at one with nature. (Since there's a lot of it where they live.)

I came home one time, and there was little kitty, chilling up one of the branches of one of our huge trees, maybe 20 feet off the ground, and I said -- given that kitty was the CLUMSIEST CAT EVER -- "are you sure this is a good idea?"

Everyone rolled their eyes.

Less than a month later, Dad gets up in the morning, goes in the driveway, and there's kitty underneath the tree with her neck broken. She was less than a year old.

Our current cats are INDOOR cats and they are 11, 11, and 16. *shrugs*

I need to start a JournalFen account as CATLOVR4EVA or something.

The cats who deign to share their living space with me (5 of them) were born outside and have lived all their (long) lives outside.

Their feral mother brought them to our barn as kittens, and fed them very well on rabbit and pigeon - when she moved on, they stayed and have become freelance vermin control operatives for our stable, in return for food and affection. They are fit, flea free, glossy and friendly. They sleep in a hay loft, and are are regular checked by our vet, who also neutered them.

13 years later we have not lost one, and have the pleasure of their close companionship through the working day, and every evening through the summer.

We also have a thriving bird population - so our efforts to protect local wildlife from kitty predation seem to be paying off. Or maybe chasing rats and mice and beetles and dogs gives them all the hunting oportunities they need.

I realise our situation differs from most, but the question of bringing them indoors never arose, and seems almost surreal to me now.

My four current cats are indoor cats, because a state highway runs through our front yard, and because from all available evidence the four of them have the collective survival instincts of a bread pudding. After the number of barn cats I saw get capped by cars, cows, lawnmowers, and Jesus-knows-what when I was growing up, I'll probably never have an outdoor cat again. I just entertain 'em where they are, they're not smart enough to figure out what they're missing.

When I was a kid, though, there was a barn cat on our farm that actually knew how to look both ways before crossing the street. Either she was the smartest cat ever, or she was actually one of the alien overlords in cunning disguise, but if she was an alien overlord I'm not sure why she'd want to eats half-grown rats.
