There are no original Wanks in Hollywood, or the HP Fandom
Apropos of nothing, Tripzy, righteous defender of the D/Hr Love, breaks up the usual "If Draco broke up with Hermy would they get back 2gether?" chatter at FAP's Draco/Hermione thread with a classic Insta-Wank.

"I have written a letter, and I will be sending it shortly to JKR."

Dear Ms. Rowling,

This letter is in regard to your recent statement about a relationship between Draco and Hermione.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, and I don’t think you are, but for many people a major part of their Harry Potter-fanhood is their 'ship (‘ship is short for “relationship“). Since 1999, long before the movies came out (which many fans, including myself, both dislike and discredit), there have been fans who ‘ship Draco and Hermione.

This isn’t a small group. There are thousands of people who believe in this ‘ship so strongly that they take the time to create art, writing, web sites, and more for it. We took our ship seriously. We believed in it. It was what made Harry Potter interesting and fun for us. I thought, personally, that the reason you were not giving away the ending to your books was so as not to ruin people’s fun. Well, you’ve ruined it now, utterly and completely. Who cares about Tom Felton? He isn’t Draco, and we know the difference. We are not schoolgirls giggling over a celebrity crush, and obviously we resent such an implication.

About 6 months ago or so, I created “The Outline.” I won’t enclose it, because it is long, but I will give you the web address if you have time to look at it: http://www.tripzy.com/content/reads/read.php?c=outline

If not (which I’m sure you don’t, because you only care about the fans who don’t like this ‘ship), I will tell you a little about it: It covers all 5 books, mapping out every bit of proof for a relationship between Draco and Hermione. It has convinced many people that we could be onto something. I’m mentioning it here for two reasons: the first is to show you how much I loved this pairing, and the second is to show you that the hints were there. I’m surprised that you didn’t even know you were putting them in, but you did. That’s what we saw.

I know you don’t care about one extra book sale, but that one book will go unsold. I am only speaking for myself here, but I know that many other books will also be left on the shelves by my fellow ‘shippers. This won’t make a dent in your fortune, I assure you. You won’t even notice the change, but I wanted to let you know it will be there when book six comes out.

All this time, I never thought you were writing children’s books, but now I see that you are. They are crowd-pleasers... but only the majority of the crowd, of course- not anyone who thought differently. They don’t matter. I don’t matter.

Let me take a stab at the ending, since I’m sure you’ll tell me if I’m wrong, right? You obviously have no qualms about ruining your books by giving away the ending. It doesn't matter that people are having fun with their guesses, even if they are wrong. But anyway: Hermione pairs herself off with Harry or Ron in a classic, meaningless, and completely forgettable relationship. There’s no conflict; it’s easy. Harry then proceeds to beat the Bad Guy, because he is the Good Guy and that’s what he does. Voldemort is gone, whatever poor sap that ended up marrying Ron comes out with 59132749 red-headed children, and the world was all smiles and joy again. The day is saved.

Is that how it’s going to be? Of course it is, you don’t even have to confirm that much. I guess my overall point is that you should stop pretending to care about your fans. Even if we were thinking of Tom Felton, which, I assure you, we were not, our opinion as people is still valid. That is our basic right. Now, you have taken that away, and I’m sorry I wasted my time on your books because now I see nothing in them.

With utmost sincerity,
(My Name)

I am hopeful someone might actually dare to suggest to this girl that if it weren't for JKR actually, oh, writing the books in the first place, she wouldn't have a ship--but given the tone of discussion I think it's more likely she'll be greeted with squees and applause.

Dead horse, meet bat. *flogs*

ETA: Responding to [info]pyratejenni's frank and polite assessment of Tripzy's letter, Tripzy offers up the following brilliant retort:

You realize you read it wrong, right? You do realize that, don't you? Do you realize that? Is that realized by you? Has realization occured, and were you involved?

I think that speaks for itself. Oh, and she's now saying that shipping has nothing to do with it--the real crime is that JKR somehow *spoiled* the ending of her series.

Yeah. Those of us who were holding our breaths waiting for the big climactic ending where Draco singlehandedly defeats evil and whisks Hermione off into the sunset are just crushed.

"quote:
The letter makes it sound like I'm forsaking my D/Hr, but I would never do that. No matter what.

You do realize that if JKR hadn't written the books, you wouldn't have a 'ship?

You do realize that, don't you?

And you do realize how insulting your letter is, right? That you're saying you know what's best for the story better than JKR?

Go ahead and send it, I'm sure JKR gets letters similar to yours -- She's only human, but she's inured to the whining and tirades, right? I mean, there's no reason for her to ever consider killing Draco off, is there?

Oh, well. I'm sure she'll give your opinion all the consideration it deserves."

Have your 'ships, no one is against that, but don't try to tell the author how to write her goddamn books.

No, actually you were right - she's not. That whole thing where they're in the children's section of the bookstore and actively marketed to children? A clever ploy to mislead you. And Animorphs? Not really for kids either. They're just put in the kids section because of an evil PR conspiracy to keep down the Big Gay Love between Ax and Marco. And god knows I would never in a million years have read that stupid The Secret Garden book if I'd known that that idiot of an author was going to end it without having Mary and Colin fall in love like they should have!

Because really, I mean, isn't who gets together with whom the only reason to read anything, like, ever? Why, novels are supposed to be just like those notes you pass in junior high only bigger, and what's the point of passing notes if not to tell your bestest friend that Madison broke up with Devon so she could go to the Valentine's Day dance with Jimmy?

Seriously, holy fuck. Where did that little snot buy her sense of entitlement, the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog?

I was considering posting about this letter in here as well, but you beat me to it!

D/Hr has been a purely fanon ship for me since book 5. Draco's characterization was far too flat for me to consider that she'll put him with the exact character who resembles her most in the end. *shakes head sadly* Some people have to realise that wishful thinking and reality are two different things.

Dear Tracy:

You are obviously in need of a hobby--a big, time-consuming hobby--since you've had time to outline all five of your books in defense of a ship that really wasn't ever particularly likely to sail. You've also obviously missed the main focus of the books, since any, er, 'shipping' (did I get that right?) that goes on in them will be a completely on the sidelines. Because they're just not the point. The point is the battle between good and evil, the point is Harry learning to face up to his challenges, the point is the struggles that are threatening to destroy the wizarding world. The point is *not* who's snogging who in the corridors at Hogwarts. It never will be. Get over it.

And as far as canon goes, the Draco-Hermione ship, as you call it, is out to sea, badly listing to port, and about to capsize and sink down to the bottom. This is because, in a series of books which has as a major theme the premise that the choices you make in life are more important than blood, it would be idiotic to let Hermione, a muggleborn witch, fall in love with a great snobby narrow-minded pureblood like Draco. Don't get me wrong. I like Hermione. I like Draco. But I won't allow them to get together. It would be possibly the biggest moral flip-flop in all of recent (children's) literature. Get used to it. Your ship is sinking. Learn to swim.

I'm not even going to address your self-righteous, incredibly wanky, fit-for-a-super-bitch attitude. I've certainly seen attitudes like it before and doubt yours will be the end of it, because one of the most unfortunate realities of being a best-selling author with a fandom made up of fangirls of all ages is that you learn to ignore the immaturity pretty quickly. And you, my dear, have a lot of growing up to do if the most important lesson you can find in the first five books is that Draco and Hermione might be getting it on in book 6 or 7. Good luck on that, then, and feel free to write me back any time you've managed to pull your head out of your arse long enough to find a pen.

JKR

I think the best is the way she linked the list of subtexty stuff she'd found. Telling the author, "You know, you might not think this works, but check out all this stuff you wrote and maybe you'll be convinced!" is... weird. I mean, what does she expect JKR to say to that? "Hey, I guess I unconsciously ship Hr/D. Better write that!" It's just confusing.

I am a fool. I clicked on "The Outline." I couldn't stop myself.

Actually, I was mildly intrigued by some of the parallels she drew between Hermione and Draco. She had a couple of good points about how both of them initially came off as bossy and nosy. Unfortunately, she quickly moves on to make points like this one:

Quote from Goblet Fire:

"You wouldn't like her spotted, would you?" He nodded at Hermione... "What's that supposed to mean?" said Hermione defiantly. "Granger, they're after Muggles," said Malfoy. "D'you want to be showing off your knickers in midair? Because if you do, hang around... they're moving this way, and it would give us all a laugh." ... "Keep that big bushy head down, Granger."

Tripzy's interpretation:

Excuse me? Did he just say he wanted to see Hermione's knickers? Not to twist his words... I joke, but he is reciprocating her concern from third year (see PoA, section one, part D). Some of you may say that he insulted her, but come on! He had to! Harry and Ron were there, and he had an image to maintain.

She also has a page of so-called counterarguments. I think the following example pretty well sums up the depth and force of her argument:

Argument: "They hate each other!"
Counterargument: No, they don't.

Yeah. Jo Rowling will be handing over the series to Tripzy any day now.

She make me remember an old interview. Jkr explained how a mother wrote her to say " The end of COS is too violent, I'll prefer you change the end and keep that in head for the next books".

JKR's answer?

Stop reading, because I'll not change my plan for you.

*boggles*

Why, HP fandom? I just don't understand. That letter is one of the most bizarre things I have ever read, and would be really funny if it was just a case of mocking the daft bint who wrote it, but the fact that she's actually sending it to JKR is just really insulting, rude and really disrespectful.

I really like the books, but I confess to not understanding the allure of the Draco/Hermione 'ship' in the slightest, and I don't understand why all these supposed 'fans' of the books are ganging up on JKR, criticising her writing and the way she's constructed characters and storylines, and explaining why their version of canon is so much better than hers. If I was her, I'd refuse to publish the last two books, purely out of spite.

Get over it, everyone. It's her concept, it's her story, if it wasn't for JKR you wouldn't have a fandom. She's a multi-millionaire published author, you're peddalling smutty, badly-written fanfic on the internet. Jealous much?

Bye, HP fandom, I've had enough. I'm outta here, and I won't let the door hit my ass on the way out!

*facepalm*

Sometimes, I really feel like quitting my fandom. I like the fics, but are they really enough to give me strength to put up with the wank?

I'll just join the Smallville fandom full-time.

...

Oh. Right.

This person seems to have missed the point of the books in a most spectacular way. Fantasy and adventure, not The Hogwarts Soap opera.

Deranged Shippers

Don't these braindeads understand the difference between canon and fanon? Sure, fanon, fanfic whatever, allows people to go off and explore all the stuff that just is not going to happen. It's about taking the two characters you might like the IDEA of together and making up a story about the how and why.

Canon is what actually happens in that fictional universe. Fanon is what doesn't. Anything outside canon is fanfic. It didn't happen.

Actually, perhaps Rowling should provide alternative outcomes to please all the different shipping camps, for example:

Book 7A - Hermione married Harry four years after they left Hogwarts.

Book 7B - Hermione eloped with Draco the day after the defeat of Lord Voldemort

Book 7C - Hermione seduced her Potions Master, Severus Snape the night of her graduation (not that we have graduation in UK schools but why let that get in the way of a good schoolgirl/schoolteacher seduction fic) and they lived happily ever after

Book 7zz - Hermione shagged the giant squid for a dare after the defeat of Voldemort, and it ate her...

And so on.

It's not really the fandom I mind - it's just the fans...

Alternatively, perhaps Rowling should call in a committee of the better known BNF's and let them sort it out.

*does Jon Stewart-style goggle-eyed double-take*

It is HER story. For the love of GOD.

Just. WOW. I, too, am mystified by her pointing to this page of "proof" and trying to say--presumably with a straight face--that all this stuff IS proof of Draco and Hermione getting together, and JKR must be a subconscious 'shipper for one of her most loathed, one-dimensional characters and the character who most resembles herself. Is this girl HIGH?

I know you don’t care about one extra book sale, but that one book will go unsold. I am only speaking for myself here, but I know that many other books will also be left on the shelves by my fellow ‘shippers.

Oh, har. She's not going to buy the book. Never heard that one before.

Dear (Your Name) --

I'm richer than the Queen for god's sake. You probably have some string and a Mento in your pocket. This will lead me to conclude two things: a) You do not know better than me and b) I could fly over there and slap you if I so chose. I am considering it, because, as they say on the internet, OMG WTF?

With utmost sincerity,
