BBC wank!
It starts way back, when the BBC decide to bring back Doctor Who in 2005. Minor murmers emerge from BBCi (their fancy online bit) about the fact that this co-incides with a webcast animated thingy on BBCi, the makers of which weren't told about it. But, hey, oversight, bad communication, whatever. The BBCi site gets over it pretty quickly and keeps up with developments, giving us gossip, etc.

Just before midnight last night, various places start suggesting that the new Doctor has been cast (here's my LJ post at the time, just for convenient reference).

Somewhere round about midnight GMT the BBC confirm that we're getting Christoper Eccleston out of Shallow Grave. Squeeing commences, and LJ icons start appearing within minutes.

But wait! Because while the BBC news site was the official breaker of this, the BBCi had no mention of it.

And then, they replace their banner with this image.

It's since been changed back, but thankfully wank-evidence was saved beforehand by a few people on the Outpost Gallifrey forums.

My fandom - so wanky, even the people who make it have public bitchfights...

But where is the wank?

Where is the nail-spitting, hair-pulling, bitch-festing, flaming,
pro and con-posting, self-gratifying deleting, posting, shouting,
spamming, Godwin's Law invoking splooge?

It's Britwank. Their style is different than most.

Yup, contrary to popular belief, we Brits do have a sense of humour. Unfortunately it exists in a parallel dimension, and can only been seen by non-Brits when looking sideways through the orange jelly from a Jaffa cake on alternate Thursdays.

British sense of humour: so dry, even James Bond wouldn't put it in a Martini.

that is priceless. Ah, you Brits put the snarl in snarky.

I feel almost ashamed of only being a colonial. This is just priceless *smiles*

*applauds* That was some /fabulously/ stylish wank. Lovely and subtle and with a fine bouquet reminiscent of snark.

Of course the only thing I care about in all of this is that Paul McGann isnt' doing it. *sniff* Poor love seems to be getting the shaft a lot lately, 'tis a shame, he's so lovely.

I was disappointed at Paul McGann not being given another shot at the role. Aside from anything else, if they keep changing Doctors every time they eventually won't be able to make any more, hasn't he got a limited number of lives or something?

On a sidenote...is that Samuel West in your icon? Because - mmmmmm. I've had a crush on him since 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader'.

It does seem odd that they'd keep switching actors like that, just given the confines of the plot and such. But I don't know, I suppose it's entirely possible McGann didn't want to go back to the role or some such, but since it seems that the last installment of Hornblower movies may not even happen now, I'd think he'd be happy for the work.

It is Sam West, as is this one. *g* I have such a mad crush on him, and have since Dawn Treader as well. Ahhh fangirling through the ages.

Mmm, Sam West.

Have you heard Sam West's reading of Peter Pan? It's like, my very favorite audiobook ever (and I'm a big audiobook fan...). So lovely to fall asleep to... ~swoons~

I've never seen Dawn Treader, though. :( My Sam West love goes back no farther than Howards End.

Guh, I love his voice, I must find that! He's so insanely proper but somehow v. bad at the same time, I can't even explain it.

And you really must see Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The story is great to begin with (Narnia is so freaking cool), and it's a v. young Sam West being snarky and all around just divine.

I'll see if I can find a copy of that, then! And yes, the audiobook is just gorgeous... it's put out by Naxos, and I *think* it's still in print.

Oh, and he also reads Wuthering Heights with his mom, and Homage to Catalonia (both of those are Penguin audiobooks). ~g~

He's so insanely proper but somehow v. bad at the same time, I can't even explain it.

I think that explains it *very* well. ~swoon~

Guh, must... find... audiobooks!

If you haven't seen Cambridge Spies, you really must. He's divine in that, and there's cute boysex and lots of angsty flirting.

I just got the DVD of Cambridge Spies, but I haven't watched the whole thing. I was even *more* swoony than usual over the whole bit with him being in bed with Virginia Woolf's socks. So bad and yet still so proper, just as you said. ~g~

The Virginia Woolf's socks bit is perhaps the most hysterically, wonderfully naughty thing I've ever seen. He's just so, SO good through the entire thing, if there was any justice he would have won like every award imaginable for that performance.

Ah, yes--http://www.dookyweb.com/avatars.swf . I suggest pulling it out of your temp files after it's loaded and saving it on your hard drive--sometimes the site's so busy now that you can't get to it.

I see the snark, but I'm not seeing any wank. Am I missing something? Ot is it just because I'm English and the snark seems like a perfectly normal response to me?

Still, Christopher Eccleston? OMGSQUEEEEEEEEE!
