Fresh HP wank: And the ships sailed on
The Leaky Cauldron plugs the result of a HP fandom survey. The survey also asked the question: Do you think any romantic relationships will develop in the next two books? If so, between whom? (You can pick more than one answer, but only one with each character!)

Out of the 4609 people, who answered this question, 3647 voted Ron/Hermione.

Wank ensues in TLC comments section.

I'm rather dismayed that so many idiots complained about the lack of homosexual relationships. I've nothing against gay people (I'm related to one) but there's no need to read your fantasies into something that isn't there. Like the sad, sad people who want a relationship between Hermione and Draco. I do find it extremely interesting, however, that the Herm/Ron relationship is being accelerated in the films. In CoS we had the non-hug, and in PoA, we have the hand-holding. I say interesting, as JK has final approval over certain plot elements, and for her to allow this means a hell of a lot in my book..

ETA More wank:

WQM on Percy/Ginny: I went to the Live Journal poll out of curiousity. Someone said they ship Percy and Ginny. That's just sick. Love is not Percy snogging his little sister. What's wrong with people!?

To which the site's uber-editor Melissa A. replies with: WQM, I'm with you. Other people I know have been slammed (ridiculously so) for saying it, but I too think such pairings are disgusting and contradictory to the tone of JKR's books. It makes me ill and sad when they're represented by fans as anything other than a completely impossible turn on canon.

Ari adds her two cents on incest and gets the following response:

#1: "Weasleycest"!!??

It took me a couple of seconds to realize what this meant. Then it dawned on me this actually was a reference to fanfics featuring incestuous relations involving Ginny Weasley and any one of her brothers.

Also equally repulsive were some fanfics I once came across featuring an incestuous relationship involving Lucius Malfoy and his son, Draco.

When will it ever occur to some people that incest is not a form of hetero- or homo- eroticism?

As Lilly indicated: "~ even the merest thought about about suggestion about a relationship between siblings is depraved, and has no place in the HP universe. Not even in jest."

And as Melissa also pointed out: "it's my opinion that it's wrong, and that such such pairings are disgusting and contradictory to the tone of JKR's books. It makes me ill and sad when they're represented by fans as anything other than a completely impossible turn on canon."

Amen Lilly and Melissa. I couldn't have said it better myself. You speak for most of us.

Commenter #2: Frankly, incest is just ... well, I'm not supposed to say anything if I can't say anything at all. I have two older half-siblings who I didn't grow up with. I adore my older sister and my brother is an absolute prince. I would never EVER think about having any kind of relationship like that with either them. Your family are the people you should be able to trust. Sadly, this is not the case in all families.

My best friend has been molested by her uncle and also her step-brother. When she told her family what happened, they just pretended it had never occured and never spoke of it again. They didn't defend her or protect her. Because of all this, she's moved to Canada with me to get away from her family. She doesn't trust them any more.

This is what incest and pretending it's "OK" does to people. She has horrible self esteem and stress issues. She feels like she can't trust anyone.

Commenter #3: Ari commented: "I've written Ginny/Ron. I don't think it was depraved to do so. I do not expect to see it canon. I don't want to see it in canon.

In fact - I'm Swiss - I don't care about shipping at all."

Surely you care about shipping to some degree, or you wouldn't have written the fic and you wouldn't have joined the discusion, eh?

I don't really think that it's 'depraved' necessarily, but just against normal ideals. It's OK with me if others want to write such fics, I don't think that they pose any irreparable harm to those who read them, but I also think that it's a shame that such high literature can lead to such low fan response. I would hope that just reading the Harry Potter books would inspire something greater than erotic fantasy-romance novels. That's just not in keeping with the sophistication set forth by canon.

Why? Why do these people (who have likely been in dozens of shipping wanks already) even bother to involve themselves in these wanks? Are they all amnesiacs, who keep rushing into these wanks because they can't remember the pointless endings to the last ones?

Or are all these HP fans secretly masochists of the highest order, who pose a danger to themselves and everybody around them???

/I've nothing against gay people (I'm related to one) but there's no need to read your fantasies into something that isn't there./

Am I insane in thinking "I don't like gay porn" does not need to be softened with "But gay people are OK"? I don't like gay porn. It's just not for me.

Just because I don't like something, I don't think it should cease to exist. I allow others Circus Peanuts, marshmallows and pistachios. Let them have their gay porn!

And yeah, I know many slash fics have a deep plot and should not be equated to porn. If you have written a deeply moving epoch in 11 pages involving chocolate syrup, Lupin, and the Weasley twins, please provide us a link I respect your chosen craft.

That survey looks rather dodgy to me. With the exception (that I can see) of Sirius/Remus, the pairing responses are m/f, which seems terribly skewed. While undoubtedly most of the people who would have voted would have been aiming for the likes of Ron/Hermione, there would have been a torrent of slashers upon there going for their own pet pairing. Not even one of those 639 "other" voted so! I wonder if the person doing the survey invalidated the other responses. Strikes me as curious indeed.

Wank? Maybe. Fandom? Not so much. The Leaky Cauldron's readers are not necessarily involved in the general wankiness of the fandom *cough*BNFFAPLJandotheracronyms*cough*, as seen by the following remark:

"I went to the Live Journal poll out of curiousity. Someone said they ship Percy and Ginny. That's just sick."

Only one Weasleycest shipper? Ah, how I long for the days of sweet innocence. Poor babies.

Any poll that can't even spell VIKTOR right is crap anyway. Jeez, I'm fucking drunk and it's 2am and I know how to spell the boy's damn name.

Also, Harry/Ginny was like second choice and then in the "Other" category there was "Harry and Ginny Weasley". Fucking idiot, I don't even know statistics and I can do better than that. Heh, I could fly right now if I wanted to.

Still, interesting answers. Was it a specific section of fandom, or do you think people actually took the "canon" part of the question seriously, i.e. separated their beautiful Draco/Dobby love from the actual, honest-to-goodness books? Because that would be cool. I would like that very much indeed.

OK, dumb question.

Ahh the HP fandom. Always going to extremes.

Gah, I've got H/Hr shippers wanking on my friends list about this. Would someone please make a [info]hp_gen community so I can join the fandom and stay away from this nonsense? XP

Actually, parts of the fandom remain relatively wank-free, and here I'm thinking of writers and readers of Snape/Harry. I believe they're a tad more mature than the average OMG Skawweeee! H/D HP bear, though.

I've nothing against gay people (I'm related to one)

And the crowds of people who have ever watched family reunions on Jerry Springer go, "Your point?"

I am so fucking tired of HP shipperwank. I want JKR to go on and on about the upcoming romance for her characters, and then go on in detail in book six about Terry Boot/Susan Bones. If I were Hermione, I'd stick with Viktor anyway. Something to be said about the strong, silent types. I don't ever want to think about Harry have sex with women, and I don't ever want to think about Ron having sex with anyone. Perhaps I shall write Jo a letter!

The first sentence of this comment isn't that wanky at all. It is just somebody saying what they think and to be fair that isn't wanky at all. Writing your fantasies into stories is what fanfiction is there for but canon is about JK Rowling's fantasy not anyone elses. No idea what JK Rowling had on her mind when she created her characters but I would lay short odds that it wasn't sex at all. The eternal sexing up of these books by shippers of all classes if great fun in the fanon but seriously, ship wars and canon justifications are truly so puerile. There is also that die hard sector of truly deluded but very loud and agressive slash shippers who truly believe that JK Rowling is using her storylines to promote their pet cause - get real you sad bastards, better still...get into politics.

You know this is a very bad question because all the fandom is going to be THRILLED while answering this and some will be pissed because not many want heterosexual relationships! (#1893)

Ooh I love this one. And this person is uniquely qualified to answer for so many people! Get your blinkers off.
