Hitch-hiker's Guide wank
There's an entire debate stating that Mos Def CANNOT play Ford Prefect because he does not have ginger hair.

Followed by an entire debate over what ginger hair really is. Is it dark brown? Is it brown-red? Is it red? Do we care?

The inevitable England v. America stuff is tossed about, folks screaming that Brooklyn is an illegitimate place for a person involved in this film to be born, etc. etc.

This is all really ridiculous, because they're fighting about the adaptation of a series that has *never* had anything resembling fluid continuity between adaptations, and frequently mutates from medium to medium...

*sigh*

You know you're old when you can remember similar HHG wanks going round cons etched on stone tablets.

I swear they'll unearth a cave painting one day with "Ug 4 Ford Prefect? Ug noooooo OMG!Buffalo!Antelope!!!" on it.

I have no idea why that made me laugh so hard. I'm just glad I wasn't sipping my coke at the time.

....

Wasn't Ford Prefect a white middle-aged English guy (by all appearances)? And isn't Mos Def a young black man from Brooklyn? If so, why are they arguing over his hair? *boggles* I might just be perverted by older portrayals, but that was my impression of him.

I have seen redheaded (what I assume to mean ginger-haired) black guys. Malcom X had red hair. Looks unnatural, but it happens. I'm sure Mos Def can pull off having his skin look like it was pulled back from his nose, smiling big, not blinking, and getting his hair dyed. It's already "wirey," so no problem there.

I've seen some things he's acted in. He's pretty damned good. I'm sure he can learn an accent. *walks off muttering to herself*

The really funny thing is - Ford Prefect is an ALIEN. So he could be ten feet tall with crocodile feet and it still wouldn't make any difference. (Well, actually, it would, since he's supposed to blend in with humans, but you get my point...)

I can't believe people actually took the time to do all that research on....hair color. Because one character with the wrong Feria hue will ruin the whole movie, for sure.

Yes, it would be. We only got rid of a letter in the word that isn't needed and made it less... well... French.

Please allow me to say that I hope Feria is not used in the film. Or anywhere. It is by far the worst haircoloring agent I have ever used... and that includes Kool-Aid.

[/idiot]

Other than that tiny detail, I agree. Overreactions all 'round.

Also, Jesus. I have a copy of the Illustrated Hitchhiker's Guide wherein Zaphod Beeblebrox, blonde beach bum president, is portrayed by a black man. How did they get around this? By adding an extra footnote that says this: Subjective impressions may vary according to local reality miscalibrations and the perceptual systems of the observer. For instance, any entity suffering from HSSE, or Mad Human Disease, will probably perceive the President's hair as being short and dark, and should consult a qualified Peripsychosemiolothanatician immediately.

Douglas Adams even appeared in the book himself as a character, so bitches, PLEASE.

No one could possibly play Ford Prefect correctly, as he's not from England or America. I refuse to see the film unless we get an honest to goodness alien from the vicinity of Betelgeuse!

Some people.

Arthur must be English. Other than him, (and Trillian) it's all up in the air. They could have blue skin, and who would care? (Personally, I'd find it very amusing if Ford had blue skin and nobody noticed--after all, it'd be Somebody Else's Problem.)

Mostly, I wanna hear "Ford, you're turning into a penguin. Stop it!" again. It's been way too long since I read these books/watched the movie/listened to the radio show.

Even more ridiculous because they're arguing over a line from the book, and the book wasn't even the original medium. If you want to be a pedantic purist, at least go to the source. The radio show came first, and Ford was never described in that at all.

And the award for the least relevant post ever goes to:

Ginger is a reddish brown, like auburn. Or, it can also mean homosexual. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

For some reason, I want to pat this poster on the arm and say "there, there, dear."

These people should wait for the actual movie before wanking about hair colour.

I'd be worried about accents more than anything else, but that's just me.

Okay, I have to admit, when I heard about the casting, my first reaction was '...the fuck?' But I have learned to keep an open mind about such things. If Tom Cruise can pull off Lestat, then anything is possible.

I might add that one cannot expect Americans to distinguish hues when they are incapable of spelling "colour". However that would be churlish and patronising!

The other night I was having a discussion with Spike about Scarlett, the TV movie adaptation of the GwtW sequel. She a big original GwtW fan, and she objected to the casting of Joanne Whaley as Scarlett because she didn't have blue eyes.

So I asked her how eye color mattered. Did it impact on the plot? Did the fact that Joanne has brown eyes change anything about the story? She had to admit it didn't.

So that's the rule I apply - if it doesn't have any impact on the plot, the characters, the interactions, etc. - it makes no damn difference.

Ford Prefect doesn't have "ginger" hair? Who gives a rat's ass? He didn't have "ginger" hair in the TV series, either (unless "ginger" means, um, BROWN) - how did that change anything? And that series was produced with Douglas Adams's blessing, for gods' sakes.

Feh.
