[info]beatprogeny has been wanking all over the Elfwood Rant community for a while now, and we've pretty much given up on reasoning with him.

Today, however, he has a problem with an Aragon/Legolas picture he found while surfing Elfwood. And boy is he angry. When informed that if he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to view it, he throws a complete hissy fit, telling people that if THEY don't like HIS rants, they need to "get the fuck out".

Small now, but these things never stay small with this guy.

Well, he certainly picked the wrong picture to prove his point. I mean, yeah it's a slash picture, but the artist doesn't even like pairing.

Man, I'D draw a Legolas/Aragorn sex scene if I was getting paid well for it.

Mmmm, hypocrisy! He edited the picture's link out of the post, too.

Mmmm, hypocrisy! He edited the picture's link out of the post, too.

He's weird that way. He'll say something and then when someone comes along and is like, "Uh, actually you're wrong" he gets all contrite- sort of- and starts going, "Oh, well, I didn't mean THAT, exactly..."

LOL! I was thinking that slash fandom should have a fund-raising so that we can pay him to draw Legolas/Aragorn smut.

That's what really got me-
he'd accept PAYMENT to draw slashy fanart, which is violating copyright (or something)and could be argued to be disrespecting the author or heirs- but it's not OK to do it for fun and no profit?

Did I miss a memo?

That's a DAMN good point. The author's intent and values are every bit as important as their characters.

ERRRRRR! I'm sorry, that's incorrect! Care to give it another go?

I too really REALLY FUCKIN HATE comming across slash crap like in the link you gave. The art itself in slash is often done so wonderfully, and IF I can ignor the subject matter I can sometimes appreciate it BUT NOT WHEN I SEE SNAPE AND HARRY or LEGOLAS AND ARAGORN GOING AT IT! I mean, COME ON!!! yaoi is one thing. But slash like thta..NO NO NO!!!!! It just completly KILLS a wonderful work of art in my opinon!

So yaoi is okay as long as it's just holding hands and picking daisies but if the characters express any sexual desires at all it's icky and wrong and bad! And the commenter is using a Gojyo icon. <3.

I love how later it becomes one of those "I'm not angry. You're angry. No, I'M NOT ANGRY I SWEAR! I'M NOT EVEN RAISING MY VOICE!" arguments.

My response to one of BP's comments:

"This community exists for the sole purpose of allowing people to bitch about Elfwood-related topics"

"Enlighten this n00b here and explain to me how slash is an Elfwood-related topic beyond what's posted up there on the site.

Slash is all over the place on the internet, not just Elfwood."

This stuff really just annoys me.

So what if it's not a pairing that exists in the canon of a universe? Should that really matter?

I support pairings in the HP-verse that are hardly canon (Snape/Hermione; Snape/Tonks), yet the fact that they're not canon but fanon (any pairing not strongly indicated in the canon is or could be seen as "fanon") never stopped people from supporting it.

And do we really need the author's permission to support a 'ship s/he never intended to make canon? Especially in fandoms where the creator is deceased (if anyone knows how to get in touch with Carroll, Lewis, Tolkien and others, let me know)?

Really... I have no idea what this guy's going on about, other than, "if it doesn't match my view of The World of Fantasy (I remember his "I hate this depiction of a fantastic beast" rant from last week), then I'm going to rant about how much I hate it and how much I don't want to see it anymore; in place I want to see this (*insert subject here*)".

Gah.

I guess BP's one of those "bitching for the sake of bitching; just give me some ammo with which to start the bitch-fest"-type people.

but because it's WRONG, and utterly disrespectful to the creators' visions, and the ideas that they worked lifetimes to make real for their enjoyment and ours.

'Because how DARE anyone view the relationships between fictional characters as something other than what I personally approve of.'

And: 'it's okay for people to be gay as long as they don't do things like have sex, or touch each other.

Does that cover it?

I've ranted at length on why "having a presumably straight character express homosexual desires" does NOT = "OMGCANONRAPE!"

Because lord knows every character is staunchly heterosexual until proven otherwise, with photographic evidence and pie charts. Resolutely heterosexual, even. There's no such thing as bisexual! Nosirree! Why yes, sexual preference is in fact an utterly integral part of one's personality, thus making all non-canon slash automatically OOC! Subtext? What's that?

In short... WTFever, dude.

They are NOT REAL PEOPLE. They are IMAGINARY. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THEY BANG.

Urge to kill rising...
[info]iczer6
2004-03-23 04:41 am UTC (link)
Part of what weirds me out about this trend is that most of the time, male-on-male slash is created by straight girls, which makes no sense to me. For what POSSIBLE reason could heterosexual females find gay male porn interesting or worthwhile?

Yes because females should never EVER show interest in anything besides vanilla, missionary sex with their husband for the sole purpose of having babies.

From dreamt
For a lot of girls, it hits too close to home to write or read sex involving another woman. Some girls have trauma in their past and feel uncomfortable with it, others just feel like it's too personal, too private, like reading about their own sexlife.

Sometimes there are NO FUCKING WORDS for how stupid someone is.

Can we call Dan Savage to lay the grand holy smackdown on this prick?

He should just get off his high horse and stop yakking about how it is disrespectful to portray LOTR characters as homosexual characters. If he reads the text more closely, he will find that there are textual evidence of male/male love between the characters (not necessarily sexual in nature).

Take Legolas/Gimli for example. Legolas/Boromir even (I always thought that perhaps Legolas might have admired Boromir from afar since he called the latter Boromir the "Fair" :P)

But whatever... This crazy talk annoys me as well.

All I can think of is the pretty, pretty Legolas/Gimli I found on Elfwood a long way back. Gimli's beard was braided. Braided in a manly dwarfly fashion, you understand.

Quiiiiiite apart from everything else - 'cause hey, as a longtime slasher and writer (OMG, theirloveissoOOC), what can I say that hasn't been said already?

But: Small now, but these things never stay small with this guy.

'Cause Grima don't want Eowyn at all. Nope. Nope. Nothing there.

Man, that makes me want to show him what wrong really means.

Hemingway/Fitzgerald. Rand/her typewriter. Stalin/Trotsky. Stalin/dead!Kirov. dead!Plath/fangirls. Snowball/Napoleon. John Edwards/John Kerry. John Edwards's wife/Howard Dean's wife.

I maintain that I'm perfectly sane. Everyone has thoughts like these.

I'm amused by how nachtritter continues to not understand the concept of fan fiction and fan art. Because, you know, fan works are practically canon!

Is there a law for when someone says that a certain pairing/story/fan art/movie is "raping the canon/author's vision"? If there isn't, there should be.

Oh yes, because every fan is so enamored of JRR's works, that they should hold them up like golden shining ideals of perfection. (Yes, I'm being redundant, shut up.) Noone could possibly write fic as a criticism for the lack of homosexuality in LotR, or to resolve their feelings of admiration for the work with their own ideals, or to re-interpret the work in light of their own ideals. No sir, nothing like that going on, just pure mindless admiration.

Rabid Tolkien fans can suck my theoretical left nut.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I do sorta kinda understand and even agree with some of his points whaa! don't hurt me! I guess the real question is where does the original story end and the fan's story begins. Some people are perfectly happy to go crazy with the author's world, but others got into fanfiction to extend the story...or to put it another way, more of the same thing, so they're not fond of the craziness.

As for slash, I used to like it, but then the stories got repetitive and dull, and not very exciting (which is ironic, because the whole premise of slash IS excitement.) Because, lets face it, you can only read so many "OMGARAGON/LEGOLASTHERLOVEISSOHOT!1!!" stories before you snap...

And as for pairings, I go for the middle ground. For example, I can like Sam/Frodo, beacause its pretty damned obvious Sam had a SERIOUS crush on Frodo on the books don't shake your head like that, Mr Tolkien, you know it's true!. And Grima/Eowyn? Maybe, after all, the good does allow the possibility. But what about the really weird pairings, like Sauron/Eowyn or better yet, Pippin/Palatril? I know it's out there, I just know it... It's one thing to use the book's original subtext, quite another to TACK subtext where it has never existed.

Does that make sense? Any sense at all? I guess what I'm trying to say is, well, here why can't we all just get along?
