May I Please Speak to the Complaints Department ([info]ladybirdsleeps) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

You're all fake writers!
The lovely [info]shoiryu dragged me back to the steaming cesspit joy that is elfwoodrant, where I stumbled across ... this:
Fanfiction is, at it's very best, nothing more than a tool for learning to write. The widest circulation it should EVER get is whoever's in your email address book. Send it out to your friends, get an opinion, and leave it at that. Things like fanfiction.net or whatever it is just make people take it too seriously, as if it's an end in and of itself, when in fact it's nothing more than a warmup for really, really writing.
Thank you, beatprogeny, for your insight.

P.S. Yes, this is the same beatprogeny from this wank. Only he can shine so brilliantly.

Wow, that was quick.

This guy's posted maybe... five times in the last few weeks. C'mon, man, you have your own personal journal; please use it.

...I keep wanting to tell him for the love of god, SHUT UP.

Incidentally, I don't know about others, but I would never *want* most of my friends to see my fanfic. Ever. Partly because, you know, slash, but also because they're not fans.

It's times like this when a super-sized version of the "STFU Choir" is needed.

Perhaps if he got a response as big as his rant he'd learn to shut up a little more.

Or at least take his rants to a forum where he won't do as much damage.

See, I hate guys like this, not primarily for their opinions (which I put in the same category as the "RPS is rape!!121" ones), but because they encourage people who are already rabid about fanfiction to become more rabid about fanfiction. "See? They are persecuting people who write fanfiction! Let us rally round the flag!"

And then you get "essays" on how fanfictioneers are more original than anybody else and deserve to be paid for their work, and the spooge goes on for eternity.

people take it too seriously, as if it's an end in and of itself, when in fact it's nothing more than a warmup for really, really writing.

In other news, nobody is ever allowed to boil water again unless they have every intention of opening a restaurant and becoming a professional chef.

So I suppose he thinks the entire line of Star Wars novels, everything Christopher Tolkien wrote, all the Dragonlance/Forgotten Realms/TSR books, Star Trek book series, BtvS books, Stargate books, Xena books, X-Men novels, etc. are not really writing either, even though they are professionally published, and quite a few of them written by well-known authors after they published their own work....

I think the Dogbert Theory applies here.

Why, WHY are all these fuckers convinced that everyone who writes fanfic are "real" writers in training? I'm a fucking voice major and art history minor who will likely end up working in arts management for god's sake, I have absolutely no intention of being a professional writer. That doesn't mean I don't like writing on ocassion, and think I'm moderately good at it. It also doesn't mean I want to spend the time/energy/etc. required to write an original novel. Jesus effing christ.

Is there a Juri's Imprudence law concerning people who say "fanfiction isn't real writing" type stuff?

Ummm...okaaaay....

In my personal experience, fanfiction is, in a way, harder to write than origfic. You have to be in character; you have preimposed restrictions on your universe. Origfic doesn't have that; the prewriting is harder for origfic IMHO, however, because you have to think of an idea and characters few people have done before, or a new twist on a cliché/standard, whereas in fanfic, you just contribute to answering the Nagging Fan Questions/Questions of Characterization/whatever. Fanfic IS real writing; it takes a LOT of work and love and dedication. (I'm ashamed because, 4 years ago, I used to *THINK* like this guy.)

And for why the guy doesn't get NC-17 stuff: HELLO. Sexuality is a pervasive part of being human. If we like something, we're basically going to draw/write/imagine it fucking. >D
