Quick! Before the FBI finds us!
Surprisingly close to April Fools' Day (and yet, not close enough), digisubbers Anime-Keep announce that they have been shut down by the FBI. In addition, anyone who used BitTorrent to download anime will be traced.

At AnimeSuki, this thread emerges as people debate how to reformat their hard-drives so They won't find all the illegal fansubs, most point and laugh at the obvious joke, and others threaten to never download another Anime-Keep release again OMG if this is just a practical joke.

Anime-Keep finally own up on their website:
(early) April Fools!

Though we must say we love you fans out there, nothing cheered us up more than seeing your crazy reactions to the early April Fools. I really feel sorry for thoses that did dig a hole for your CDs and format your hard drives, I wish you better luck next time!

ChibiDusk, one of the most terrified of the previous posters, now claims (s)he was bored and was just "being dramatical". Fun all round.

People were going crazy in the LJ Full Metal Alchemist community as well.

This 'we're being closed down sorry :(' joke is getting old as it is, and now they're pulling it off before April Fools and expecting people to think they're clever for it? As much as I like FMA, Anime Keep DESERVES being drowned by semen for this one.

YMMV, of course. :D

Yeah, also gotta love the smirky little "Sorry you formatted your hard drives" in there, too, making it clear they're not really sorry, but actually amused as all hell that they fucked over their... viewership? Downloadership?

Heh, I never even noticed that, since I never go to the front page, I have the pages I need bookmarked... :D Would have probably freaked out, I'm so easy to mess with.

Laaaaame joke on their part ... though it's even worse that people actually took it seriously. Ah April Fools...much wank is yet to come, I predict. ;)

That's seriously lame. April Fools is bad enough, but pulling that crap when it's ~not~ April Fools? Not cool. Not cool at all.

No kidding... I await the day that people start being "clever" enough to pull tricks on April 2nd, and say that it's an early version of next year's joke.

There is no spectacle on earth more hilarious than a coven of frightened wankers. Never, ever ever. And this is much easier to do in anime fandom than anywhere else. Could you imagine this sort of April Fool's joke happening in the Harry Potter fandom? You'd probably have to have an interview where JKR tells us that Snpae is killed off in the next book to get this sort of uproar.

If it had happened -on April Fools' day-, it probably wouldn't have been as big a deal. Considering it's a few days early, I dunno how the joke is quite so "obvious"... are we now supposed to be paranoid a week in advance and start forcing out hearty belly laughs at every lame thing that MIGHT be a joke?

Alas, trolls connected to the anime fandom rarely seem to get creative about it... it's always the same ol' shit that's been done a bajillion times before, and wasn't clever the first time.

Reminds me of the time someone who ran a Hardys website (two popular wrestlers at the time) put about on April Fools' Day that the boys had been killed in a car wreck. Ooooh, the wank fell on that day. And it was Wrestlemania day, which made it all the more...something.

In any case, what you saw is very real. It is directly from the DOJ website, and includes REAL plausible litigation that could be used. Maybe it's a good lesson to you all that, things arent as simple as we'd like them to be.

Translation: We are the heroic digisubbers! The mean old DOJ gets in the way of this pure artform that we have created ourselves! Waaaah!

Cough.

That'll teach 'em being paranoid idiots instead of gullible idiots. Admittedly, the former are more fun to mock, but then they aren't exactly an endangered species.

And here I thought the game rules for april fool were, uh, foolproof. My bad.

Of all the times to be thankful for having a dialup connection and no memory...

When I was in high school, the seniors pulled a prank one year in which they sent a letter to all the parents saying the school's accreditation had been revoked. My mother was all set to sign me up for summer school, that's how serious we thought it was. The administration were NOT amused at getting four bazillion frantic parental phone calls, and senior pranks were heavily monitored from there on in.

There's funny, and then there's just plain stupid.
