Americans Suck! I know, I'm Australian!
Mmm, Gaia Wank, how I love thee.

In ED, mewcou posts what could have been the start of a nice debate revolving around the War in Iraq, Saddam Hussein, and WMD's.

Shinra replies with his thoughts, with a little less tact than he probably should have, and mewcou offers up his rebuttal.

Soon enough, the spooge begins to fly as mewcou accuses Shinra of just using propaganda to support his beliefs. Shinra heatedly responds and mewcou, who is also essentially using propaganda to support his own side, responds in turn, and the circle of wank is completed, for a time.

Meanwhile, others post inane comments about how Bush blows and he was just out for oil, until Degotoga dares to question mewcou's logic concerning foreign policy.

Mewcou decides to change tactics and throw down the blanket statements left, right and centre, about how Americans don't even give a shit about their own and we suck really really big balls.

Unable to contain myself, I post and tell him to shut his pie hole and quit stereotyping.

Celeblin Galadeneryn then posts, misquoting me and I bite her head off in a reply, bitching her out for not reading my post.

Mewcou finally responds, saying that he meant America in the political and military sense, that he's Australian and he's visited America, so therefore he can stereotype us all he wants. I wank right back, tell him to piss off, and then I carried my smarting arse right on over to here.

Small wank, but jeez! The "I know all about America and its policies and goings-on, despite living in another country" attitude from mewcou gets a big WTF.

Feel free to mock me for wanking. :P I deserve it.

Wank be here.

Maybe I'm just waaaay more supportive of Bush than any of these people, but I don't see a whole lot of difference between mewcou and shinra's opinions. Not that I expect "Meet the Press" out of an anime board, but the idiot factor seems unusually high with this one. < /wank>

I do not, however, like how some posters insit on "All Americans are heartless, WAH WAH WAH if you're so great why does the world still suck?" Hi, we were created like 300 years ago and you expect us to be everybody's big brother. Okay, sweet. And yet you get offended when we try to act like everybody's big brother. Okay, nice. And then you absolutely ignore all the foreign aid we DO give up. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Sometimes I think that speech by that Canadian radio host about how Americans get the short end of the stick should be required reading for these people. Cheese-us.

Hi, we were created like 300 years ago and you expect us to be everybody's big brother. Okay, sweet.

Nope - America acts like the big brother of its own accord and expects everyone else to be grateful. America then has a hissy fit when the love and gratitude is not forthcoming.

And yet you get offended when we try to act like everybody's big brother. Okay, nice.

No, we get offended when America decides to act in a way that is inconsistent with the principles it purports to support (see opposition to Iraq -v- support for Saudi).

And then you absolutely ignore all the foreign aid we DO give up. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

The same foreign aid that the US uses as a stick to bash developing nations with in the United Nations (i.e. support our resolution or we cancel our aid, support our position on abortion or you don't get money for clinics, support our big businesses and allow them to dominate your economy or we'll put up tariffs against you). In terms of sheer gross sums provided, the US does give more than many other countries, in terms of a percentage of what it could give, it lags behind countries like the UK, Australia and Canada and in terms of imposing restrictive covenants on what the money can be used for, it's in a league of its own.

America does get the short end of the stick sometimes, but that's the price it pays for deciding that that it's interests take priority over everyone else's.

On the other hand, I completely worship your icon. So 'ray 'ray USA.

nonny

You are being a little bit confrontational there, but I understand it's a touchy subject. One of the problems I've had most arguing over American foreign policy is that the way Americans relate to their country seems to be a bit different to Australians. Americans - and this is a generalisation, but work with me here - are more likely to take criticism of the current government as criticism of the country and people as a whole. I love my country and many of its principles, but I think the current government should be beaten with a rubber hose until dead. And the current government is so shamelessly awful that if anyone from other places wants to join in on that view, I say the more the merrier.

Hi, we were created like 300 years ago and you expect us to be everybody's big brother. Okay, sweet. And yet you get offended when we try to act like everybody's big brother.

This, on the other hand, is an extremely touchy subject for everyone else. If you don't want people snapping at you, I suggest you never bring it up again. Because as far as I know pretty much everyone wishes the US would stop doing that, then adding insult to injury by saying we asked for it. (Particularly when it comes to interfering with the governments of sovereign nations.)

Although currently, neither of our countries look good. Bush went to war in Iraq based on a pack of lies and political opportunism, and we went along because nobody in our government ever asked to see any evidence and Bush threatened trade tarriffs. Yeah, we joined in a war because we were worried about our wheat exports.

Embarrassing for everyone involved, really.

No kidding. So the entire Mideast is a hotbed of "Muslim terrorism", huh? Why don't we just bomb them all then? And while we're at it, let's take out Northern Ireland! Bomb all terrorists! Next up-- Montana! Oh, but leave North Korea alone, because they might-- gasp-- fight back!

Never mind that Saddam Hussein isn't religious in the least, and he and bin Laden probably hate each other with a fiery passion due to their diametrically opposed ideologies-- all Muslim bad guys are the same, right? Right?

Mewcou slowly gets madder and madder... heh. He nailed at least one point -- I sure as hell didn't know anything about the Taliban until 9/11.

It's weird how individual Americans take criticism of our government's international policies so personally. Dude! You could get out there and march in front of the White House every day of your life, yet America as an entity is still going to do dumb stuff you disagree with.

I didn't agree with this one: Please....America couldnt give 2 shits about helping those less fortunate, it proves that in it own country. The fact that s/he saw some homeless people on the streets is just anecdotal evidence. If you want me to believe we aren't generous, then show me how our international aid and the charitable contributions from individuals compares to that of other countries.

I do understand the underlying frustration in the statement, because Bush has been twanging on the heartstrings of the American people regarding the invasion of Iraq. We're generous, but we're not always the brightest lightbulbs in the drawer. As far as the people in the military and our more fervent patriots, many honestly seem to believe we are there to bring freedom to the country. IMO, they're being conned. The fact that we are generous and believe in the wonderfulness of democracy and freedom and all that just makes us fall for the propaganda more easily.

The Bush administration isn't the sharpest pencil in the box... and the whole bunch of people who voted for them.... well, I'm speechless really. *shakes head*. Remember that whole incident where the Americans (and their allies) ignored the wishes of the UN and invaded Iraq? And when Bush said that "If you do not fight with America, you will not do business with America"? That's arrogance, and being stupid and arrogant isn't always a good combination.

On the other hand, I think America did the right thing to want to oust Saddam out of Iraq. He's a dictator who cares little for his people. Did you see how his sons live? Like a freaking King they did and all the while his people were living the lives of paupers. All in all, the general consensus in Iraq was that they were pretty happy to have Saddam out of their lives.

However, I feel that it comes at too great a price. The war costs a bomb. Not only have the Americans to pay for the overhead costs of the initial wave of attacks, but they have to maintain hundreds of troops in Iraq. It's a freaking waste of money IMO. So much violence over a mere speculation (as asserted by that dude who killed himself) and so much controversy about the supposed presence of WMD in Iraq.

Politically, Iraq is a mess. Americans are facing a loss of credibility from their neighbours, namely the Muslim countries and these anti-American sentiment is slowly escalating to violence even in places outside of the Muslim countries. (i remembered reading the news about how the American Athletes got pelted with eggs and stuff in an international sports event. Can't remember where at the moment).

So coming back to the wank, it's impossible to take sides in this issue because we don't know the whole truth. There are so many sides to the story and so many right answers to a particular question. Is there WMD? The answer could be Yes, because the American Intelligence (and so many others) said so. OR No, because there are none to be found and there are "evidences" that point to the fact that the documents were false.

In short, those two who are at the opposing ends of the argument, they are both generalizing. Shinra was exceedingly stupid as he was loud and his/her points are mingled with glimmers of half-formed ideas that are mashed with lots of the trash he watches from the American TV shows. Mewcou based his opinions on the trash that HE gains on whatever TV show he watches (that was clearly Anti-American) and tries to put it across as his own thoughts.

So as you can probably tell from my facial expression here ---> -_-. I'm not impressed.

Oh by the way, if mewcou dislikes Americans because of Bush, hey, we can always bring up Pauline Hanson and how like 5% of the Australians support her One Nation policy (that was discriminatory toward the Aborigines). That ought to shut him up about how imperfect America/ns are. :P

Every time people start arguing about America and how much it sucks/doesn't suck, I'm always reminded of this Kids in the Hall sketch -

Bruce: Some people look at a flag, swaying in the breeze near the White House and say, "That's America." Whenever I see an American flag hung in a window of a basement apartment by guys who have better things to do with their money than buy curtains, I say, "That's America, to me."

In America, there are fifty-one states. Or maybe it's eighty by now. Does England count? I'm not quite sure. The one thing I am sure of is, if I'm standing in a warehouse beside a timeclock, and a guy is punching in his best friend who's too hungover to get out of bed, I'm standing in America. The makeover capital of the world. The place where every young man has to answer in his heart the question: What do you love more, your girlfriend, or your car? Where that young man can buy a beat-up car for three hundred dollars, but have to spend a thousand to insure it. The land where even a paperboy can option the film rights to a book.

America. In America, a woman on an assembly line works out her overtime in her head to infinity, and at the exact same moment, her husband gets into a car crash because he was looking at a girl in a tube top.

America. A land where spelling doesn't count, but people's pets do. Where else can you get a job riding a whale at Marineland? The land where a guy's girlfriend breaks up with him over the phone, so he takes a gun, and kills the principal. Everyone's sad until they get the day off. Next week, another guy, another gal, another, "We can still be friends" phone call. Uh-oh! The assistant principal gets killed. And everyone is sad because they don't get the day off. Because he was only the assistant principal.

America. A land of opportunity. Yes, that great lumbering beast that journeys tirelessly and stops only to eat a clubhouse sandwich, pick its teeth with a matchbook cover, and fall asleep with the tv on.

America. A place for Americans.

Ah, KITH. Where would Canadian comedy be without you?
