A tiny Erinblair XF Wank
Our little pal Erinblair is at it again over at the fic board at The Haven. This time it's her usual cry for attention in a thread asking about self-promotion.

Oy.

And despite the usual extremely gracious responses by other fic posters she just.doesn't.get.it.

I don't know...yeah, that girl doesn't get it, but I'm wondering if she's capable of getting it. Something seems a little off with her and the people responding to her seem a little relentless, like they're enjoying slapping her around.

Seems more pathetic all the way around than wanky, to be honest.

Pshaw. What's she complaining about? I know who Erin Blair is ...

The most famous XF badfic writer ever. (Maybe after Hepstation (sp?)

And I've been out of the fandom for years.

Same here. You know a writer is bad when you still remember her name 5 years later.

Exactly. If there's one thing not to worry about here, it's name recognition.

(Of course, she was also known for receiving psychic messages from Gillian Anderson as I recall...)

A long time ago, people said to me: "Erin, you should post more often. We want to know about you." And now people are telling me to hardly post at all. I'm just so confused.

That is confusing how?
This is more on the really, really sad side of mild wankiness.

I feel like going for a walk in the sunshine now.

She's still around? I left that fandom years age -- and she was there long before me. And one of the reasons I learned to love lurking.

What I learned during the Spookys that I don't feel that I did enough PR. I feel that my stories aren't being read because I have left the fanfic community for two years.

That's probably it, yeah.

Well that, and people know how to use their delete keys.

but are people aware that this young woman is developmentally disabled?

I understand that people get frustrated with Erin because she is, to say the least, dogged in her determination to become a BNF. However, I really don't see what the big deal is. If you don't like her stuff, don't read it. If you find her posts annoying, don't respond. And for God's sake, don't make fun of her. She's clearly incapable of learning. So, what the hell is the point?

I know, I know, I'm wanking. But, I know that we don't wank underage people at this board. I'm kinda thinking the same thing should apply to someone who has admitted that she is developmentally disabled.

Not cool at all.

She has discussed her limitations several times in many, many, many threads at the Haven. (This is, after all, Erin Blair.)

She has also discussed her disabilities in numerous other fora over the years.

It is not a secret.

I may not be speaking for the community here when I say- well, big fucking deal. A lot of people have developmental disabilities. A lot of those people also turn out brilliant. Everyone has their things to overcome. And, thus, it is quite morally acceptable to wank someone for being a dense idiot who can't shut up.

Sorry about that, I'm running a mild fever and don't like seeing the comments clogged up with things that aren't funny.

Meh. For once, I'll turn off the snark here and say that I'm not seeing what's so bad. Admittedly, I haven't a clue who Erin Blair is, and, not being a fanfic writer, I have no idea what the dynamic of theses sorts of boards is, but she's being quite polite here. Of course, it could be disingenuousness, but it would be polite disingenuousness. I understand the other posters' exasperation, assuming that she's as bad as they claim, but am not the type to just take their word for it, especially given that several of them seem to take great pleasure in lecturing her on her undesirability in oh-so-polite tones. Give it up, honey -- you're not fooling anyone.

Personally, I think the discussion over exactly how and when one can talk about one's fanfic is a tad wankier -- I feel like I've stumbled on some Victorian-era Rules of Order with a bunch of people muttering, sotto voce, "How very tiresomely lower-class of her. So, my dear Lady Muldertehroxxors, shall we adjourn to the parlor and discuss Mulder/Cigarette-Smoking-Man slash over a winsome port I recently acquired from my man in the Belgian Congo?"

Yeah, the whole hostile-yet-polite dynamic is funnier than anything Erin's doing. Notice that they start off sort of mild, and when that doesn't cause any fireworks they keep turning up the heat.

Man, you hit that right on the head. That's exactly how it sounds. And that politeness from the "corrective" posters isn't fooling anyone. They're beating the piss out of her and having a great laugh at the same time.

"Developmentally disabled" or not, she said she was sorry and promised not to do it again. I'm not sure what else she should do. Having undergone a thorough ass-kicking public ridicule, I think she's paid for her real and/or imagined transgressions in spades.

The thing that's making me shudder here is that I remember Erin from years ago on various Les Mis/Miss Saigon boards. Usually getting incredibly obsessed over Lea Salonga...for anyone who cares, a Google search using the two names together would be likely to dredge up more wank than you could shake a stick at.

I don't think the thread is particularly bad, actually - I love the comparison to Miss Bates - and lord knows I've seen far worse. Unfortunately, I remember the wank on rec.arts.theatre.musicals and various other places way too well to be objective.

This quote from the thread isn't wanky, but I did find it highly amusing:

In my opinion, the best example of an author who does no self (or other) promoting really, is Prufrock's Love. I think I am in good company saying that she/he is a terrific writer who's work everyone knows and respects.

Oh no, dear Pru has no marketing strategy whatsoever.
