Will the wank never end?
Remember the trainwreck that two girls caused in the BitofEarth community, leaving behind a huge financial mess for other fans to clean up?

Well, it's not over yet.

This time, Turimel decides to wank Sean Astin after receiving no replies to her e-mails concerning the situation.

Everyone talks about what a saint Sean is. Well, you know what? People are like tea bags. You see what they're made of when they get in hot water. You take Sean out of a sea of adoring, complimentary fans, and put him in a difficult real-life situation, and you know what? Mr. Concern For Others can't be bothered to say "Thanks." Or, God forbid, offer to help resolve the situation.

Wait! That's not all! Let's see the comments posted to the LJ!

Notable ones:
How dare you chastize Sean Astin (and others, but most particualrly Sean) because they won't dance to your tune and align themselves with your neurotic witch hunt.

You need to get some kind of professional counseling to help you get past all this before it does even more damage to your life. Your problem, now, isn't Abby and Jordan. Your problem now is YOU.

And as far as dealing with difficult real-life situations, since you have no true understanding of what it is he actually goes through in his real life (and neither do I, for that matter), you have definitely misspoke about his ability to cope with what YOU have termed a "difficult real-life situation".

Wank on, LOTR.

Frankly, Sagra, I don't much give a damn if you feel my comments are less than helpful. I wasn't attempting to help or to impress anyone. I was saying how I felt. If Turi doesn't want comments.. she's free to disable them. As long as she doesn't do that.. I'm free to say what I choose to say whether you happen to agree with it or not.

Obviously. There's no law against making an utter jackass out of yourself on the internet.

===

::sighs happily:: That was lovely, [info]sagralisse.

This enitre situation never ceases to confound me. I think we might have to remove the Supreme Tinhat of Scariest Fandom from Harry Potter's head and "reward" it to LOTR. Questions? Comments?

Wow....god, this thing never ends, does it?

I mean, it sucks that she lost money. It does. But....well, to be blunt, my sympathy has always been tempered by a general "How the hell does anyone actually fall for that kind of crap?" reaction, and now this obsessing and decrying the morality of Sean Astin is just so bizarre. I mean, you got had. And you got had in such a way that you aren't really going to be able to fix it--if the police don't want to press charges....there's not a lot to be done. Maybe take them to small claims court, but instead she's flipping out over the airline sending a collections agency after her (not that it's fun, but it's what businesses DO when they don't get their money; they don't really care WHY they haven't been paid) and...what, expecting Sean Astin to save her?

It's just also extra-weird because a friend of mine just met Sean Astin Monday when he visited Kerry's campaign headquarters here in DC, and emailed me about how nice and gracious he was.

My my, what a lovely circle jerk. I feel for turimel, that's gotta be a massively suckfest situation of proportions I can hardly imagine, but I don't really think it's entirely fair to wank all over Sean Astin like that. But then, the rabid fangirls defending ickle Seanie's reputation are beyond the pale.

This is turning into the wank equivalent of The Thornbirds or something isn't it? Ah well, it's the length of Ken Burns' The Civil War now. I wonder if there'll be a ten VHS set of this we can buy from PBS later.

This actor sounds like any other normal human being, staying far away from all the Internet crazies, including the ones who've been rip-offed by the other crazies -- as if he could really tell any of them apart!

This girl's problem is that while her problems are huge to her (and I'm not saying that $6,000 in default is nothing to sneeze at for most people), they really, truly, sorrowfully don't matter to anyone else, especially not some actor who doesn't know her, Crazy Number One and Crazy Number Two from a hole in the wall.

She needs to pay a good lawyer to care about all this, but if she could afford one of those, she'd be better off just paying off the $6000 and living poorer, but wiser, from now on.

A course in sensible money management wouldn't hurt either.

Oh, and the person getting all offended on his behalf ... I'm sure he wouldn't give a crap about her or her OMGSAVESEAN! attitude either.

No, this wank probably will never end.

There is enough wank on all sides here. Yes, Turimel was royally hosed - I'd be rather ranty about it too. But yeah, she's also too much with the revengehaterage. Expecting celebs (or anyone else, really) to join her campaign is wanky. The people who replied to defend Sean were wanky - he's a big boy, I don't think this one chick's LJ post is gonna bother him. The people replying to the Sean defenders were wanky - fans are allowed to get indignant, yo. And here we are wanking on all of them. *drowns in spooge*

I still say HP fandom is the wankier, but LotR does give it a run for its money.

Okay, just my $0.02

It was wanky. It was very wanky. If you're looking, Turi, I hate to say it, but it was...

However, in Turi's defense:

/wank on

It isn't like Mr. Astin is the only person she mentions in her rant. But to those who said, why pick on Sean Astin... here's the clue-by-four--

By coming to these events (cause there are two that I know of in which people get defrauded), intentionally or not, Mr. Astin gave a certain amount of credence to BoE as a charity and a real entity. This in turn made it easier for A&A to use people. His fault? No. Worthy of mention and acknowledgment? I can see why she might think so. I can't say that I disagree with her.

I don't think that she feels Mr. Astin should pay the debt, or anything of the sort. What she seems to desire is for someone among those she has tried to keep apprised of the train wreck to at least fucking say Thank you! or even a sympathetic Shit! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I wish I had realized so that I hadn't become involved in it myself.

Instead, she has gotten silence. Others who had been listening have stopped either answering emails or are otherwise blowing her off and it's bothering her. Frankly, that'd piss me the hell off too.

From what I can see she could deal with being told "We're not going to do an article on this." by the people at TORN. I expect that a note just from Mr. Astin's publicist or agent saying "Thanks for the information about how A&A are using Sean's name to get people to give them money, we'll keep an eye out for further such things..." (since that should be damn well actionable by Mr. Astin, if the girls continue to use his name to defraud people.)

Instead, people flee her on the boards and on the whole all she seems to be receiving is silence and stonewalling from the police and the OAG.

Oh, no, here come the italics of rage!

Of course she's upset by this!

And bitter.

And disillusioned.

Does she need to face up to her own gullibility? Damn straight. Does she have a right to be fucking pissed off about how other people aren't? Yes.

Air the fuck New Zealand, who refused to call the invited celebrities to a god damned courtesy phone and explain that someone had been defrauded out of the money for those tickets... Yeah, they *should* be forced to listen to what their own crappy customer service did in the attempt to keep a sale. Frankly, they should have damn well eaten the charges. It was their customer service that deliberately ignored that information.

Sean Astin? Marginal involvement, but his name *gave* Abby and Amy enough credibility that they defrauded a lot of people, not just Turi. He doesn't have the responsibility for what Turi did with her own money but the simple acknowledgment that he (or his people) didn't do a thorough enough background check on those girls... that might be a plan. Frankly, I think not taking care with how his name might be used makes him look like a bit of an ass.

Abby and Amy? Where can one even start?

/wank off

On a side note, yes, Amy's claim to be Mr. Wood's cousin who was being hunted by the IRA is freaking bizarre and should have been the first clue that something wasn't right. But just because I wouldn't believe it and you wouldn't believe it doesn't mean that someone who is predisposed to believe in the best of people wouldn't.

And once again we see why I prefer to stay in my very small corner of my fandoms. ^ ^

As to the debate of the wankiest fandoms, it comes down to this. Harry Potter has the quantity, as you can't go to any HP mailing list or community without *some* argument appearing, and Lord of the Rings has the quality as most of their wanks include many, many details and backstory that just make your head feel like it's going to explode.
