My Fic R0><0r! STFU! I'm leaving the fandom!
Once upon a time a prolific author received (her first?) criticism in her guest book, which she thoughtfully reproduced on her livejournal:

From my guestbook :P

You have an excellent grasp on plot, but I wish all your characters didn't sound the same. After a while, they all start behaving similarly (smarmy lovey dovey elves) and that is kinda sad. Your stories would benefit from less pairings and more charactarization.

LOL ---> I guess this was one person who didn't vote for me in that contest in which I won some awards! LOL

Giggling...

Morgana

Her fans leap to her defense, defending their mistress and threaten the miscreants who dared insult their bewuvved.

Let me at her!! A wet mackerel's not enough to knock her out! Would anyone kindly lend me a bow and a poisoned-tipped arrow? Lady M, your fics are the most amazing AMAZING stories alive! Plus you're my most favorite fic writer also!! Don't listen to those flamers Lady M! They probably couldn't write for sh@%t! 'Scuse my french. I'm practically steaming right now....>:

This goes on for a bit, and things settle down but then, wait – OMG MORE PEOPLE CHIME IN AGREEING WITH THE CRITICSM!

...I just don't think you should disregard what someone says because you don't like it. How can you get better if you don't pay attention to constructive critiscm? Which is what I think that person was trying to do, not flame.

Hellfire and damnation! Morgana fights back! As we all know, in this situation there’s only one thing to do:
Threaten to leave the fandom:
You know what?

I am going to take a looooong break.

Nothing I do or say seems to be 'right' so why bother when no one is listening?

Signing off...

Don't expect me back for quite some time. I need a break from this fandom. I hope everyone is pleased now. No more fan fic from Morgana. Maybe the critics can take over and produce some fics as they seem to know better?

bye
morgana

Crying ensues...well, kinda

Morgana decides she can’t totally abandon her fans. Shocked, shocked I say.

*In the interest of full disclosure I do write in this fandom, but, like the other fandoms in which I participate in, I’m slow to update and stay in my corner.</i>

"OMG because someone posted constructive criticism about my fanfiction I am going to laugh at them and if people actually agree with it I am going to threaten to leave the fandom so that all my minions will come running and post sappy comments for me to stroke my throbbing ego with!!!"

Yeah. Some authors never cease to disgust amaze me.

Oh I shouldn't give into temptation but....

How about Philip Pullman, Dan Brown,Lloyd Alexander, Shakespear, Tom Stoppard, JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, Jeff Smith, Pete Abrams, JRR Tolkein, Rumiko Takahashi, L. Frank Baum, Stephen King, etc.

[Note this list is meant to reflect my opinion.]

Holy shit, people--if you want to claim that fanfic is "real writing" then you've got to take criticism like a "real author."

(Wait, "real authors" don't take it too well half the time, either. Forget I said anything.)

It's Strange Really...

I've told Morgana my opinion on her stories on the LOM forum (i said that it wasn't really my thing) and she was cool with it actually. I don't know where all this wank came from if truth be told. It really doesn't sound like her at all.

Morgana's fanbase is huge what with people craving to read her Elf Slash. One person's opinion that deviates from the usual OMG I LOVED YOUR WORK shouldn't have affected her so much. I certainly admire her capacity to churn out fics after fics because it's something that I can never do (I tire easily) but in all honesty, her Elves are too weepy for my liking. If she can change that small aspect of her writing, I think she would be definitely be a fantastic author.

PS: Maybe we should start a new branch of fandom_wank specifically for whiny authors/ reviewers... lol.

But in any case, I respect her. So I'm not going to agressively partake in this wank out of respect for the works that she had done.

Not so strange really...

5. I have been in several fandoms these last 7 years and I noticed one thing. At one point in each fandom people appear out of nowhere and start to 'send constructive fb' to established and new writers. People like these have been responsible for a very negative development in the Sentinel fandom (writers stopped writing and left, me included) and if people aren't careful I can see the same thing happening in the LOTR fandom. Am I overreacting? No, I have seen this happen before and I know how to read the signs.
(http://www.livejournal.com/users/morgana_avalon/53243.html)Does this mean that when people in any given fandom have read enough to recognise badfic when they see it, it's time to move on?
Maybe the wank springs from her failure to realise her fic is soap...

Actually, since I'm a touch involved being one of her fanboys, I didn't think the whole thing wankish except for her break.

There wasn't much splooge.

See now? Watch me not leap to anyone's defense. *lies there limply* See? No leapy.

To be honest I don't think critisisim should be permitted except by request of the author, but what the hell, that's not the issue here.

The issue is that while she's not the greatest writer in the world, she's still a pretty important person to me. And I will miss her, because I do love this woman, as one of my friends.

Anyway. Wanted to bounce in and admit that.

I have *begged* (begged, I tells ya) for conctrt and I can't get it. Why is it that people who do get it act like victims of something beyond their control and they don't *neeeeeeeeeeed* to grow because they're like God and their writing is perfect in every way.

I have been writing fanfic for 7 years, and there have been about 20 complaints about my writing in all those years, whilst I have over 300 subscribers on my mailing list. Makes me think I am doing something right.

And fuck that. Being a BNF *doesn't* make you good. In fact, I've found the opposite is usually true except in really small fandoms.
