Rap is Very Very Bad for children. Because it sometimes has dirty words in it. Also, R. Kelly raped that little girl, and he's a rapper, so, clearly, rap is bad.

I have a feeling this person would also have a problem with a good chunk of rock, country, and jazz music as well. Oh, and Cole Porter.

Britannicamoore has a good gripe but she doesn't seem to be getting it across. Hip hop glorifies the shallowest set of values you can possibly imagine, and does so in a very loud way. Any message that's not about greed, sex or testosterone simply gets drowned out.

And of course she got called bigoted right away... sheesh. Why can't a black person complain about a dominant force in their culture that they consider to be negative?

As for me, more of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" please. I adore complex vocal rhythms and word play, but if all you have to say is that you have bling bling (or you want to kick it with a bro that's got the bling bling) then I'm not terribly interested.

It's big chunky expensive jewelry... like a gold chain a big dollar sign pendant.

Can also be money, I think (as in having the means to purchase said jewelry). However the slang changes from song to song... it's hard to tell.

Heh. The chorus and the title were taken from "Pastime Paradise," by Stevie Wonder. I found that especially ironic after Coolio got pissed at Weird Al for "Amish Paradise."

Any message that's not about greed, sex or testosterone simply gets drowned out.

It's like any other genre of music. You have to dig for the good stuff.

There's tons of positive and/or intelligent hip hop-- The Roots, Black Star, Del the Funkee Homosapien/Deltron 3030, KRS-One, Anticon, Jungle Brothers, Blacklicious, Digable Planets, The Coup, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Das FX, Rakim, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean... you get the idea.

White Kids Love Hip-Hop!

At the risk of repeating the wank... I see my boyfriend's kids being much more influenced by the shallow rap (the kind you get if you don't dig and just listen to the radio and MTV) than my kids are influenced by shallow pop music. It just seems to me to be more influential among black kids... maybe because rappers are seen as being very successful.

Just comparing bad influences... my kids watch South Park. There's lots of cursing, but the messages are usually stuff like "don't be a hypocrite," and "don't be a homophobe," which IMO are actually sort of cool. The messages I see coming from a lot of the popular rap and hip hop are like "money is everything," and "make a guy show you respect by buying you stuff before you sleep with him." Those are the sort of messages that I'd rather my kids not embrace.

Yeah, yeah, parents should ban the rap... but they don't.

I agree, toliet humor aside South Park is a surprisingly intelligent show, one that does have occasionally have a good point and doesn't try to ram it down your throat.

Randomly... one of my favourite songs is a rap song, "End of the Story" by Swollen Members. If only because I keep trying to figure out every band mentioned in the lyrics.

"As 10,000 Maniacs emerge from an Oasis, it's Everclear my Soundgarden was invented to Blind Melons and Smash Pumpkins..."

50 cent is worth less than 50cents (shot 7 times? i would never let my child go see that)

But I take my kids out to see people getting shot all the time! You can't tell me it's not normal.

Wil Smith-he's the best example of the music industry i can think of to prove my point. He sold millions of records without using a single peice of profanity. Also he had subtance to his lyrics-and it wasn't just abotu cars or cash.

I am not even going to comment on the fact that Wil Smith can't rap for shit.

R Kelly isn't even a rapper. If you are going to complain about something, you should be a little more informed. Also, I don't think rap is incredibly worse than rock and roll for sex and violence.

*adopts wild-eyed look, complete with foamy flecks of saliva flying from mouth*

Of course rap is bad! You can't have the word rape without rap!

(Seriously, though, I am not a fan of the genre, since I'm an acoustic instrument freak -- hence my addiction to bluegrass and Celtic. My thing is intricate instrumental harmonies and virtuoso playing, so rhythm and bass do nothing for me besides annoy me and give me a headache. And I too am disgusted with the aspect of rap that gets so aggressively promoted in the media.)
