a small first wank
ok, here goes. My first wank. *feels all nervous and jittery* This is from my own personal addiction fandom, Magic the Gathering. Not something I'd expect to find linkable wank on.

First off, a bit of background to the wank. There is a program that's been out for a while for people who wanted to play with product for prizes online. Magic Online has had many people logging on and playing for over a year now.

They've been having major problems recently with their leagues and premiere tournaments, causing them to take them offline for a while. They now want to bring them back up, but first they need to test and make sure they've fixed the bugs.

They have a beta server which allows people to play for free but not keep any of the cards. The problem is that for leagues and premieres they need people to stay in the tournaments so they can finish some out and find out if the bugs are there. On the beta server, people tend to drop out of tournaments and move on rather quickly and it won't help Wizards get the tests they need on it.

So one of the guys helping keep Magic Online operational, Daniel Myers, set things up this way. Beta testing would be from Tuesday through Thursday and winners of said tournaments would receive prizes on the live server when it came back up. Sounds reasonable right?

Apparently not. Kenoc has a major problem and posts this, as it will "devalue his collection". People begin to respond tamely, but then Murat joins in and wank begins. Small wank so far, and in an obscure fandom, but only time will tell. :-)

...M:tG wank. Oh, wow. This is a thing of joy, and I shall value it above rubies.

My life is complete. I can die a happy man now.

Does anybody want to buy a huge nerd's collection of Beta/Unlimited cards? No? Anybody? Are these things even worth anything anymore?

More than's probably a good idea to have held on to for so long--you know you're not a true M:tG nerd unless you hoard obsessively. ^_^

You could do what one guy did during a Vampire LARP at Chattacon a couple of years back. He needed a diversion for the game, so he dumped a boxful of Magic cards onto a crowd, trusting the ensuing scramble to provide said diversion. It apparently worked quite well.

Allright, I didn't use the proper words. Wizards is denying me the access to MY cards for 2 more days. They claimed MtGO is up and running 24/365, and I paid for my cards assuming it would be. If they had said that they would take down the server for extended periods of time because of their incompetance, I don't think I would have spent any money.

Dude. It's 2 DAYS.

I guess there's a good reason we used to call it 'cardboard crack'...

If they had said that new computer systems rarely make it through their first encounter with the users without having some sort of a bug they would take down the server for extended periods of time because of their perfectly normal and to be expected system glitch incompetance, I would have still spent my money don't think I would have spent any money.

*NNNGHH* Vein, throbbing...

One of these days, because of asshats like this, I'm going to find the grave of the guy who first said "The Customer is Always Right" and pee on it.

I'd go up a tower, but they'd just blame *that* on gaming or comics or GI Joe or slash fic or some weird-ass combination of the above. Can't have that.

Just because Leatherneck had that 70's mustache does not mean he was making unseemly advances during those SCUBA classes. It was all saved for the showers.

Zartan made his rounds with the Dreadnoks as well as Dr. Mindbender, and that there are uses for B.A.T.S. that they do not teach us as children.

Damn skippy! The way those two argue? Fhht, they're two fights away from a committment ceremony.

And of course, Storm Shadow and Snake-eyes (if you're a comic fan). Scarlett, you're a beard, get over yourself.

GI Joe slash-fics? With Ken?

But, dude. Magic: The Gathering is the game I've been playing since I was eight and now still play on an offline gaming system that is so old that it only works on an obsolete computer as any of the newer computers simply cannot handle it.

totally agreed. Sometimes I wonder if people just seem to take major offense at anything that can slightly inconvenience them. Especially when there's an opportunity at free product to boot. *shrugs* What a loser.

Yeah. It's kind of the distant cousin of the 'We were inconvenienced! We have to sue!' mentality.

Sometimes complaints about poor service is worthwhile. This is not one of those times.

I'm a bit confused. I have a green deck that never fails to kick ass while being lots and lots of fun to play, and it is made of commons. I don't think it has any real rare cards it it. And I or have built decks of a similar style in the past - good, but cheap.

So, has the Magic game changed so that it now possess a hiearchy of rare cards other than the ridiculously expensive Black Lotus and the Moxs or am I missing something?

I know certain cards, like Royal Assassins, can be more expensive and a great benefit to a deck, but the same can be said for inexpensive cards, such as Cockatrice.

Then again, I don't think I have any cards past Ice Age, so I probably am missing something.

I applaud you, since I feel the same way about the common / rare duality ... but you have missed out on some of the SHIT in cards -- and they ain't all rares, neither. I recommend that if you enjoy(ed) the game, you go back and check out what's new.

The new Magic scares me a bit. All these new rules, and they took out banding! None of the new cards have it, and everyone I play against doesn't know of the ability!

Besides, I don't spend money on Magic cards.
