So, greymatterdsgn wants to let fans of Sean Patrick Flanery (Young Indiana Jones & The Boondock Saints) know that he's a decent guy who doesn't mind serving a fan a drink at a bar.

Two replies later, Leeloo2 turns what could've been a nice all-growed-up people's discussion about what a celebrity (and with SPF, 'celebrity' is used quite loosely) owes his or her fans turns into

So the two cretins who couldn't spell a screen name properly to save their lives have joined forces? Well, birds of a feather I guess. *sigh* I don't think I will ever understand why I try so hard to educate people who are obviously ignorant beyond hope.

It's imdb.com, yes, but it didn't start with the standard "OMG Sean SUX!! u all r losers!" like most entries at imdb.com There are some good points here and there, but the funny stuff is in between.

You say celebs don't owe us anything? Just where do you think they get the money for their mansions, yachts, jewelry, furs, etc., etc.? They may live large, but it's hard-working people like me who make it all possible. Therefore, they would be wise to treat fans respectfully.

damn, leeloo2 is really holding a grudge over those mansions and diamond necklaces.

When someone has been affected by another's art, they feel compelled to return the favor, if you will, in some way. Thanking the person doesn't totally balance the scales, but it is all they can do and so the words of thanks burn on their tongues until they can speak it. Mine certainly did, for over a decade -- until the day I stopped being a fan because I couldn't take the emotional abuse anymore.

so now sean patrick flanery is not only an asshole, but an abuser? omg, what a scumbag!

...on a side note, what's with the "if you misspell a word in your user name you don't know how to spell it" sub-wank? I mean, does the concept of lots of people = fewer English words to use as user names slip past this individual? S/h/it seems really hung up on correcting people's user names when I've always assumed misspellings in them were a result of the original spelling not being available (wolf and butterfly being two of the more popular animals). It was just so random... to accuse someone spelling their user name "butterflie" of not knowing it was actually "butterfly"...

Of course, the only person I've known so far who could accuse me (correctly) of misspelling my user name chose not to (though amusingly she pronounced it correctly in her head - this amuses me because I usually give people the 'they-or-ee' pronounciation of my name because I think it's easier for them to remember and it's swiped from the other culture of my heritage).

I love the whacko pronunciations in Celtic languages. Of course, I don't love it when wankers try and correct my spelling if I use "bansidhe", but whatever.

But let me tell ya, trying to learn Gaelic on my own while taking higher level French in college made my head explode. Those two languages don't mix well in my brain.

Mmm, I've read some of the Eddas in translation, great stuff! I've already picked up bits of Gaelic and Welsh, and my latest projects are Catalan and Cornish. I really, really want to learn Occitan, but that requires finding some decent books and I can't quite seem to do that.

he's an actor, right? not some guy from a band who refuses to bang groupies (HOW DARE) and jumps right back on the bus after the show without signing autographs for people who waited for him in the rain/snow/earthquake/apocalpyse? i can understand, to some degree, people expecting to meet musicians, because they go on tours and announce ahead of time that they will be in specific cities. do actors now owe it to their fans to go on national tours in which they hang out at bars and hand out diamond-encrusted medals as thanks? i guess there's always mail and email. but to be honest, i barely answer any of my email, unfamous peon that i am, and i see that as a healthy distance, considering some of the psychos who flood my inbox.

haha i'm no good at responding to wanks, i always end up getting involved.

Blergh, see I've seen this explode in the theatre fandom over enough, that I'm wanky from the outset (I know this, and knowing is half the battle). I mean jesus christ, you pay to watch them act. Did you in fact get to see them act? Then you've gotten your half of the deal. When you buy a ticket to a movie or a play or a concert, you don't buy the performers for god's sake!
