DeviantART posts a simple poll: Would you consider yourself a religious person?

The questions are simple yes or no. I being Christian choose Yes. I'm not at all suprised by the fact that 70% of DAers don't consider themselves religious, while 30% do.

The rabid Christians, however, are shocked by this mirror of how religion is divided in the real world, Christianity being a minority, and many declare that they shall convert the masses, save those who are lost, etc etc.

And then it starts to piss people off.

I replied to a wannabe-martyr type somewhere in the mess of my fellows wanking off to the sound of beating bibles, but it's all so much religiwank that I couldn't limit it to i_wank.

Enjoy. And bow before GOD, you blasphemous, Hell-bent sinners!

The thing is, the poll didn't ask if you were Christian, it asked if you were religious. I wouldn't be surprised if the 70% DID have Christians among them.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the 30% included other religions. Heh.

that's why i didn't understand why people thought the poll should be more specific about which religion a person subscribed to - if such a generic poll inspired wank, imagine if people had been asked to specify their religions!

Yeah, I agree.

On a side note, what is *with* this assumption that "religious"=Christian? I see this everywhere all of a sudden.

Not a new thing.

Check out the Dewey Decimal System. 200-299 is religion. Of that, 290-299 is non-Christian religion.

That seems to be as much a belief among the Christian branches of religion as it is among the non-Christian... y'know, like how marriage is inherently the domain of the Christian/Catholic church, apparently.

I always see anti-religion wanks that are just about Christians alone, and I'm like "Christianity isn't the only religion out there, y'know..."

It especially burnses when they're part of the same belief system as you. Yet another case of 'Stop being on my side, you're making my side look stupid'.

I really tend to argue more with my fellow Christians. They're just so... stupid sometimes.

I love religion/God/Jesus/bible/muffins-polls.

In Sweden it's rare to believe in God and religious people are generally looked upon as strange. But then again, we're a country of heathens. 3.3% of the population goes to church for Sunday Mass. It's interesting to see how other countries "do it". :)

France was the same way. The unofficial religion there is Catholic in Name Only. My host family identified themselves as Catholic, and my host brother had been confirmed, but I must have blinked the day they went to church, because I totally missed it. I think it's because back before the revolution, there was no separation between church and state, and the fact that both were corrupt fostered much anti-religious sentiment (as well as anti-aristocratic).

For that matter, from what I've seen of Europe, it's pretty much non-religious across the board. Guess it's because all the religious nuts came over here. :)

Actually, according to a research I saw, Finland had 4% and Sweden bit more, maybe 5%... of course it may be that the research you've seen was newer, religions are going down here... doesn't matter anyway, the important thing is that Scandinavia was at bottom in pretty much all the religious charts. :D Go us!

[I had a course called "Survey of North America" and on the lecture about religions the teacher showed lots of charts that compared countries. 44% of adult Americans go to church at least once a week. O_o]

I hate when they make that a yes or no question. I have spiritual belief in a great whatever that may or may not reside high atop the thing (I watch too much West Wing). I don't follow a religion because I don't like the idea of requiring the folks you call "community" to believe the same thing about who brought us into the world and where they'll put us when we're dust. So I end up checking "no" and looking like a godless heathen, which in turn causes christians who think that theirs is the only religion (note: this is a specific type of christian) to have high blood pressure.

I'm all about keeping people healthy. The box marked "other" is my friend.

I was running into this problem some, being in such a Christian community. At some point I decided I didn't like being a generic godless heathen and that surely somebody had figured out a religion that would do.

In researching I found a Buddhist sermon that basically said Stop asking me about the existance of God and the soul and all that. Worrying about all that unanswerable stuff interferes with your spiritual growth. Viola! My search was over.

Well-meaning fundies fret about you if you're a godless heathen, but if you say "I'm a Buddhist" most of them feel like they have to be tolerant. It's sort of cheating, but I never claimed to be a good Buddhist.

More than half the world follows a religion, and the second biggest group are "Christians." I'm sure a much smaller section would call themselves "religious."

Problem with any pole is it is biased by how you word it, where you put it, whether the results are public, and how it gets out. On some face-to-face polls, the sex, race, social acceptability of an honest answer, and enthusiasm of the poller can wildly change the result.

For instance, when going door to door and asking what magazines the family reads, more people will say "Popular Mechanics" than actual issues of "Popular Mechanics" sold. If you ask to recycle magazines, you're more likely to get the truth (and a few cosmos and playboys).

So, we can say that reasonably affluent english-speaking people ages 11-22, with artistic interests, moderate computer knowledge, and access to that website are only 30% "religious" (a term whose definition changes person to person). That's not a great representation of any population but the people who took it.

What always gets me in these discussions is the people who react with pity when I say I'm heathen, or tell me I'm "lost" and will someday, theoretically, be "found." Does the phrase, "I don't think so," ring a bell? Sheesh... as if Loki or Odin would let me stay lost for long (unless they were amused by my struggling and I was being lame).

There is a rant in their... an entirely sploogy, annoyed rant... and I have the quotes to trigger it... but I'm to tired. Rant later. *yawn*
