Mithril awards, anyone?
Surely someone will be not bored by this. marigoldg gives us the inside scoop on the wretched festering pit of festeringness that is the Mithril Awards. Except that she's a very polite person and would never put it like that.

Note: No, I don't think the OP is being particularly wanky beyond taking her fandom very seriously. I'm more interested in how the Mithril award people will respond. They seem to be uber-defensive (if we can go by what marigold is saying).

For instance, some anon friend of the Mithrils might come to fandom_wank and say The wank! My eyes! regarding marigold's post. *waves to anons*

[ETA: More links - Marigold's post about EW. A post in which llinos and celandineb duke it out. A mod at the Yahoo group says she's thrown EW out. Hooray!]

[ETA #2: Marigold gets kicked out of the Mithril Yahoo group. She calls for a boycott of sorts: I know it is petty, but it would be nice to see a long opt out list of people who don't want to play - it bothers me that they have this attitude that they are better than everyone else, because they certainly aren't, and we didn't ask for them to declare themselves to be over us. : )

Wow! If all the good writers join the boycott, I'll have a chance to win! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!]

[ETA #3: Oh crap, I said that out loud. >:(]

You missed the best part!

E.W.: No you are not, you are trying to find fuel to feed the little band of insecure, malcontented sycophants that crowd sround your feet for petting.

Or was that what you meant to link to in your second link? It seems to lead right back to F_W for some reason.

Yay, you found the gold egg!

About the second link, I suspect that it may have been posted by someone from the Mithril awards, urging us to mock marigold.

There's also this, wherein we meet E.W., also known as Elizabeth Wyeth, also known as hooperhoover or something on yahoo, who ups the entertainment value tremendously. The "insecure syncophant" insult is especially amusing, coming as it does from Isabeau of Greenlea's own personal lapdog.

And the wanky part of the whole Mithrils, I think, is the sooper-sekrit nomination and screening process to pick out the best of the best. That would really only work if you trusted them to actually screen fairly, and not, say, drop a fic that might be too much competition, or let an ineligible fic slide through because it was written by a friend. But they would never do that, right? Right?

this whole thing seems a bit silly to me anyway. Really, dont people write fic for the fandom and for their own entertainment? I would think a site like "Is My Fic Hot Or Not" would be more telling of quality, where people read them and then rate them. I know these communities exist, much of the fun of F_W comes from them.

If what i am reading is true, these awards seem to just be a way for these folks to pat each other on the back, over and over..a little faster..yeaaahhh

Ah, but there is a place like that - The Pit of the Voles, also known as http://www.fanfiction.net/ - where one can stroke one's ego with hundreds upon hundreds of reviews saying "OMG, this ficcy is sooo gud. Write mor, k, but this time, make all the bishies gay!!!ichi1!"

AFF has the little star rating thing, but all you see is page after page of five-star stories, Mary Sues included. Of course in the LOTR section I think that the more OOC you can make the characters the more squeeing you'll get.

I'm not sure who to point and laugh at first, the "Look at us being all literary and professional and shit!" wankers on the MA committee or the people who quit writing and left the fandom because they didn't win a Mithril.

Truly I will never understand how anyone can take an archive as hilariously self-important as Henneth Annun seriously.

Where the heck is Henneth Annun anyway?

Anything Tolkien lends itself to self-importance. If that actually culled the gleeful bashing of canon characters that goes on elsewhere, then I'd be all for it. But then, I don't read much, as even small mistakes in characterization put me off.

Last year there were quite a few authors that came to doubt themselves and their talent, because they did not make the shortlist or win one of these awards, purported to be handed out to the best in Tolkien fanfiction. Some even left the fandom, feeling that they were bad writers and that the public didn’t care for their fics.

Poor bunnies.

the people who quit writing and left the fandom because they didn't win a Mithril.

I can see why you'd think that - but, Marigold is a beta and doesn't really write anyway, although one of the stories she did a major beta on and contributed to, won a Reader's Choice Mithril thingy last year, so that theory don't work.

As for me - my stuff ain't even eligible as it's a wip, was then - still is, so it still doesn't apply. Sorry.

It's rather fortuitous that participating in this is as close an experience to a real world literary competition as you are likely to find in fanfiction.

Not all--I would even venture to say not even most--fanfic writers write in other people's worlds with the aim of honing their skills for professional publication. There is, in fact, no reason that they should.

What? You mean people might actually write...for FUN? That not everyone has delusion of graduer plans to become the next Tolkien or Anne Rice?

What a concept! My mind is blown.

Seriously, her comment in comparing the different genres (fan fic, original fic and TV tie-ins) made me think that she might write novelizations of television series.

TV tie-ins are (relatively) quick to write, especially when one considers that unlike fan fic, there is no evolution/devastating angst/permanently debilitating injury/death to a major character. All series characters and their environs must return undamaged in the next novel when this writer is finished playing with them.

Am once again reminded why I withdrew from most of the LOTR fandom. The MAs and the MPAs drew more wank than you could shake a proverbial stick at. I suppose they can be a good idea... I have seen some award ceremonies go off without a hitch. But nowadays I'm inclined to feel the bile rise in my throat whenever I hear of a new award ceremony popping up. Even though it is kind of entertaining to see people duke it out over a bunch of pixles to put on their webpage.
