The Humblest Man on the Net
One of my favourite usenet posters is John S Novak III, and his main realm of operations is in the Robert Jordan newsgroup. Although the group has been on the slow decline for a couple of years now, he is but one of a group of dedicated posters who have been around since the early 1990s.

It's a very acrimonious place. Recently, one of the older posters (Maggie) asked a question about the West Wing: specifically, when did it start to suck. Richard G. Rius gives her a fairly reasonable answer, pointing to the final episode of last season ("Commencement") and explaining a little bit about why things have been less interesting since.

Maggie's response (a few posts down)? Spoliers. SUCK. You. Mouthbreathing. Fuckwit. [SIC]

Several people come to her defense, because hell, she's a "name" on the group. However, Novak is also a "name" and he calls her on her bullshit, in several deliciously acerbic posts.

Examples:

This is actually bullshit. Spoiler protection, I'm sorry to say, is
not the norm. You can only expect spoiler protection in a few pretty
narrow circumstances.

You can expect it in an on-topic newsgroup, if the prevailing norms so
dictate, because it's a good way to enlarge the readership. But even
then, the protection only holds for a short period of time. You can
expect it, in common conversation, for a pretty short period after
something (a TV episode or a movie, say) airs, but not much farther.

Past that point, insisting or expecting spoiler protection makes *you*
the arrogant asshole, since the assumption is that everyone has to
watch out for your virgin ears. Just not going to happen.

Or, to be brief: Frodo lives. Caesar dies. Christ does both.
Get over it.

And, excerpted from a direct reply to Maggie Herself:

If you actually think people are going to go to that much effort to
protect you from common knowledge, you are going to lead an angry,
bitter little life, spent with many interludes of shrieking.

How do you answer that question without including spoilers? "March 12, 2002, about 8:45"? "Well, I don't want to ruin it for you, but this thing happened, and then this person did somthing, and it's sucked ever since"?

"Tawdry Usenet drama" should so be an icon.

Geez, what an idiot. I haven't watched the West Wing since middle of the fourth season, and I knew all that stuff. It's like complaining that I knew Rodya was going to commit a murder in "Crime and Punishment" because I took a film class that showed a clip from a movie adaptation. Oh no, I've been spoiled for the book! The professor was clearly a mouthbreathing fuckwit for not warning me there'd be spoilers in the class!

Oh my God, it's John Novak!

Wow, I used to hang out with him on rec.games.frp.advocacy, way back in The Day. Then I moved and fell off the face of the earth, lost his email addy, went off-line for about three years, and always felt vaguely guilty about losing touch. In fact, I still have some out-of-print paperbacks I hunted down for him and had promised to smail mail to him lying around the house somewhere, and every time I run across them, they fill me with a sense of shame.

So thank you, fandom_wank! For this, I'll even check out a newsgroup dedicated to the abhorred Robert Jordan.

Heeeee love that....

I try to avoid spoilers but have never been rabid about it. However, book 5 I stayed off the internet, would put where I was in the book on my status messages on my IM's and I did tell people please not to tell me spoilers. Then one day I come home to listen to my answering machine messages and my sister tells me who died. No, I don't regret shaving off her eyebrow when we were little....

Spoliers. SUCK

Wait. If she's been watching the show now, and someone tells her about a past episode, why should it matter? O_o

I mean, I can understand if you're trying to watch the show from the beginning and don't want to be spoiled. But geez.

That's like....reading the fifth book of Harry Potter first. Or something.

Getting spoiled was my own fault when I read the newsgroups before the last few X-Files eps aired one season. Some numbnut was bound to post a message entitled, "KRYCEK DIES!!!!" just to watch the feathers fly.

When, on a mailing list with clear spoiler rules, someone posts "Ep III Spoilers - [deleted character name]'s role" in July 2003... I get cranky that 1) Einstein posted part of the spoiler in the header and 2) most of the suprise is blown without even opening the message, duh. I already know to avoid the magazines, the interviews, the TV specials, the web sites, etc. when the buzz starts. It's a bit annoying to have to tiptoe through or avoid a mailing list for two years before the movie comes out.

That said, the screechy whiners screaming about 'spoiling' already aired eps make me want to whip out the "Stop being on my side, dammit!" icon and beat them over the head with it.

Frodo lives. Caesar dies. Christ does both. Get over it. is hilarious and must be iconed, stat!
