Beating the Skeleton of the Dead Horse, a Wank in Three Movements
punk_turtles posts to the YouThink.com forums, waxing poetic about Avril Lavigne:

"I suppose everyone is tired of reading post based on the pop princess, Avril Lavigne...Well, I was reading in what I think was Newsweek magazine, and there was an article based on Avril..Well, I was reading along, when I came across the part where they called her the anti-Britney.."

Apparently this is rather old news, as the first few commenters point out, which after a comment by jusork ("Criticizing an artist because their [sic] popular is the wrong way to judge an artist") turns into a pleasing diversion about lip gloss, and then Kareng steps in with the ill-fated caveat, "The joke is Avril."

Cue CRYN_OUT—"The joke is how jealous you are of her!"

Several people point out not only the dubious nature of Ms. Lavigne's "talents" (disclaimer: I know nothing about Avril and prefer it stay that way) but the fact that CRYN_OUT doesn't "have to diss people who DON'T like her."

CRYN_OUT (responding to asserations of Avril's lack of a good singing voice): "She doesn't lip synch and I can tell because the song has variations in it." I have no idea what that means.

It calms for a while and then more "haterz" chime in, with CRYN_OUT making a few feeble attempts to stick up for her fave ('cept for one attempt on page 5 where she bravely and courageously says "f*ck"! Twice!).

And punk_turtles was never heard from again. The end.

P.S. "And you're anti anything that is not Beatles or Eric Clapton, so it seems." And there's a problem with that how?

ETA: Thanks to ivorykisses for pointing this out.

my favorite part is when cryn says she knew it was going to cause drama the minute she saw the thread. did she mean she knew SHE was going to cause drama the minute she saw it...?

I think CRYN_OUT is actually Avril Lavigne in disguise.

A little bit, on kasuino's part. Not really anything big. Good read, though.

punk_turtles: Eh, I haven't posted since I'm not really online since I have a life to live instead of just being online..

I must commit that one to memory, Sure that is a brilliant way to commence any apology online.

Why can't anyone agree with wretched Cryn_out about whatever it is?
Let's all find nice things to say about her idol.

Cryn_out...if you read this...Avril Lavigne has pretty hair.[/solemn]

That would be Kerianne's Law of Dramatic Irony, yes.

But the accusation that everyone else spends too much time on the internet is only implied here, so let's be lenient. As in, leaving it at a sentence to open his windows for a while rather than forcing him to go outside.

I sort of like her eye make-up. Well, at least the one she had in the one video I've seen, where she jumped on a car and was a little rebel.

"The joke is Avril."

I gotta agree with that. The gal couldn't carry a tune with a bucket and her whole career seems to based on her wearing waaaay too much eyeshadow and trying desperately to be 'goth' or 'punk'.

Aaand, in interviews, she's admitted she didn't even know who the Sex Pistols were.

Punk... and not knowing even that they were a band.
Can we just shove her back into school, let her whine and bitch and moan, and maybe get a job flippin' burgers already?

I thought that pretty much WAS where she ended up. I mean, aside from the occasional half off poster at Sam Goody of her looking angsty and angry, has she really been anywhere?

She's actually been touring malls. "Spontaneous" concerts planned weeks in advance. I was hoping the Place d'Orleans would collapse, but alas, it did not.

Really. She mispronounced 'Bowie' at the Grammy nominations too, and defended both of these little oopses with 'I'm only **teen, I don't know about people that old and they're not important anymore anyway'.

Not to mention Bowie isn't that hard a name to get right. It's pronounced just like the knife. The knife I want to chuck at her records. She's stupid on many levels.

I've been staring at this comment for a while and I just don't get it. Please explain to your fellow idiot. What do Bowie and a knife [pronunciation] have to do with each other? Well, besides that all Bowie bashers will be gutted with the knife. Is Bowie a knife brand or something?

Bowie knives are a very well known brand and it's pronounced the same way. As knife/sword lover, the comment she prattled off cut deeper than normal. < /sword puns>

Heh, I remember that. I'm not sure exactly how old she is, but I'm only 20 (and am probably just as pathetically suburban, if not more so than she is), and have known who Bowie was since I was fourteen. However, I know next to nothing about her music, except that she had a song called 'Complicated', and I only know that because my sister made up a much funnier version called 'Immigrated' when her boyfriend spent the summer in Bosnia.

She's nineteen, but you wouldn't be able tell from the way she acts. I've seen 12 year olds that are more mature then Avril (I read the newsweek referenced in the wank too, and geez)

And I really want to read the lyrics for "Immigrated"

Eww. Why must people in my age range constantly embarrass me? I swear, we're not all ignorant morons, who think culture didn't exist before 1980.

Honestly, I can't remember much about 'Immigrated' except that I died laughing when I first heard my sister sing it. Next time I see her, I'll quiz her on the lyrics, since I'm pretty sure she remembers.

I found out about Bowie when I was 12 or so... some of his songs were played on MTV. Still, I have to admit that it was quite a many years after that when I started listening to his music.

She needs a hard kick on her ass for that... Bowie is a god! And honestly, not knowing who Sex Pistols are? If she claims to be "punk" [excuse me while I laugh my ass off!] she could at least try to find out the basics about what's she's claiming to be... Hell, everyone knows Sex Pistols!

She was also a HUGE bitch to Kelly Clarkson at the 2003 American Music Awards. Kelly was presenting an award to her, and went to hug her, being a fan, and Avril rolled her eyes at her and walked past her. In later interviews, the reason Avril gave was because Kelly was wearing a fedora and a shirt with a tie and was "totally copying her." Kelly's response was: "Omigosh, who knew Avril invented ties!" Heh.

That said, Avril's songs are pretty infectious. *hangs head*

No, no. The worst was her appalling performance of "Complicated" on Jay Leno a couple of years ago. If she hit a single note on pitch, I certainly didn't hear it.

Ug...I'm sick of people complaining about the pop stars in general. And the sad part is, most people got ostracized for even saying they like their music. If you like their music, so what? No one should have to tell you otherwise. I hate rabid music fans more than anything. They make me want to...bash someone's skull in...preferrably a teeny-bopper. Music is about variety, if you don't like a certain band there are many others to choose from. And if someone else insults your band, accept that they have an opinion different than you.

A side note here: when I worked at a summer camp, a lot of the girls there would bitch about how much of sluts Avril and Britney were and even continued to say that they were posers and that the good music came from not as popular bands...like Linkin Park, Blink 182, and Limp Bisket. *head desks* I had the biggest issue with the word poser. Sort of hypocritical. Like what you like...not because it's popular or not.

I'm snorting, but then I might be a hypocrite since when I was around their age (12-15), my favorite bands were INXS, the B-52s and Blondie.

Heh, I totally agree. Thank you for voicing this! I love a lot of pop, but not because it's deep or anything -- sometimes shit just SOUNDS good, you know? If you want a good beat, listen to Sean Paul. If you want deep insightful lyrics... look the fuck elsewhere. (Nada Surf! But maybe that's just me.)
