A little understanding of fine cognacs - as opposed to cheap brandy - can not only spare one a few headaches but lead to a far more satisfying gustatory experience.

I think "gustatory" is the wankiest word I've ever heard.

in regards to the entire article,
there's a fine line between expertise and dogma.

Huh?

So where's the wank? I see no BNF posturing, no teenybopper author wailing because her fic wasn't considered the Greatest Story Ever Told, no fangirl lamenting that thier heartthrob got thrown off American Idol.

And to be honest I agree with the author. I don't see what's so god awful about actually KNOWING about what the hell you're talking about, or wanting the best.

Cause ya know maybe, just maybe there's more to writing than getting your ass kissed, and more to music than having a bitching guitar solo.

Maybe if you replaced "High Noon" with Smallville and "Starship Troopers" with Popslash and The Return of the King for "Die Zauberflote" and Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone for "Der Vampyr" in the paragraph:

On the other hand, a few hours invested in understanding what one is to see or hear at a performance can yield rewarding results. It can bring insights into why "High Noon" is an outstanding example of cinematography, whereas "Starship Troopers" is a scandalous waste of perfectly good celluloid (and of a pretty good juvenile science-fiction novel). An understanding of what was in Mozart's mind when he wrote "Die Zauberflote" - and why it is better than Marschner's "Der Vampyr" - might begin to dawn.

?

In other words, it's not the fandom, but it's certainly the wank.

She also once wrote an article about not watching TV, which profiled others who also don't own/watch TV. Which is fine, except it gave off this whole air of "I'm better than you, for I don't need TV!" (said, of course, with her nose stuck up in the air) Ever since then, I've refused to take SBM seriously. Not that I have before, really.

(BTW, katemonkey, do you live in the STL region, too, by any chance?)

Alas, no -- I saw this on Metafilter and promptly recognized it as Even-Better-Than-Fandom Wank!

Clearly, the difference between developing an appreciation for the artworks of varied groups and cultures and deriding popular works should be fairly obvious? Give-away term: "high culture".

Opera was once a mainstream, pop culture phenomenon, you realize.

Music appreciation can be enhanced by, but does not require, a degree.

This writer seems to be claiming that the elite cultural artifacts of yesteryear (often stolen or borrowed from mainstream "plebe" culture) somehow have a natural superiority to popular works, and therefore those who scorn the culture of the dominant elite are doomed to a sad, inadequate world of terrible art.
