Seiyuu Wank! =D
This is small and a little old (and over with) but it concerns the fandom of a singer and seiyuu I used to be incredibly obsessed with, and this amused me too much not to post. (And I figured, being a member and lurker of f_w since last summer, that it was time to pop my f_w cherry. Heh.)

Megumi Ogata is a very, very talented seiyuu in anime. Among her most notable roles are Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, Haruka (or Sailoruranus, from, durrrr, Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon), Shinji from Evangelion, and Yukito from Card Captor Sakura. Hands down, she rocks.

Many of her English-speaking fans are quite convinced that since she tends to do male voices - never mind the fact that she can do girly voices and children, (e.g. Emeraude from Rayearth and Child Mamoru from the Sailormoon R movie, respectively) - she's a lesbian. And consequently, they think she's hot because of that. (Idiots. *eyeroll*)

On the first of April, Ogata-san writes a message to her fans (in Japanese) that she has recently gotten married to a (male) office worker thirteen years younger than she is. She also reveals that they have been living together for five years.

The Megumi Ogata Club at Yahoo!Groups go nuts because, OmG nOoOoOoOoOo, it lieK HAS 2 B aN 4pr1l f0o1z jOke ri73?!?! She wouldn't do this to her fans 'cause she knows that being a lesbian is why people love her!!!1111eleventyone111ichigostrawberryisn'tanumber!!!1111

Er. Yes. Anyway. *cough*

Turns out it is true, and not an April Fool's prank. Ah, well. The little fangirlies debate it anyway.

What made me go *sporfle*:

What about it IS a joke does no one understand?!?!?!?!?! There is no way that is
true. Absolutely no WAY! She would never. I agree that she would lose a hella
big amount of fans if anyone found out for sure if she was a lesbian or not. Her
whole ploy is that since no one knows for sure either way, both the people who
like it and the ones who are opposed to it can be her fans.

And then:

"I think she'd lost half her fan base if we ever knew
she wasn't gay for a fact. I bet it's just a joke."

Yeah, sure. The reason so many people admire her is because they think she's gay. You'd think on this theory that Takarazuka would be more popular in English-language internet fandom. *snort*

Although, the poster of the second message did say something couple of posts later that made me respect her just a bit more:

But even if she
did... nothing personal, but most of you guys are
girls ages 16-22 who don't speak Japanese who have a
crush on a Japanese woman in her late thirties. So...
I don't think it would have worked out anyway : \

Although, then we get obligatory nutcase-in-denial-who-can't-write-decent-English, whose two messages read:

#1

what??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as that it is, that Megumi Ogata, san is married? ; __;

Buaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
(Megu chan, you are not able to me, to make this)

No, it cannot be, that is not true, it should be a joke
no?
Megumi, san you this playing, a joke. truth?
truth?

Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!! ; ___;

Megumi, san you are not able to us, to make this
I am, sure that it is a joke

Karen Ogata

And #2:

OHHH MY GOD!!!!!

I am, very confused
I simply am not able to, to imagine my lover, Megumi, san married. ; ;

Hmmm............. is not able to, to be true, is not able to, to be true, is
not able to, to be true!!!!!!!!!!! ; ;

this already begins to worry

for moments I believe that is true, and so strange at the same time
I don't know that to think.

really ogata, san will be playing a joke?

I would like that Megumi, san clarifies all this.

Karen Ogata ; ;

Awwww. *snicker* Does Ogata-san know she has another lover? Well, I didn't either. =P

And lastly, yay for a voice of reason. I admit, it's not enough to get me to want to join this group, but at least I know not all of the English-speaking part of my fandom are silly clunches.

Hmmm. I rather think fans who would drop her merely because she
reveals her sexual preference in marrying a man are fans she's better
off without.

Amen. =_=;;

Huh. @_@

Wow, it's been a while since I've been in any anime fandoms, but I thought fans had gotten used to the idea that a seiyuu can very well be straight, even when playing role after role after role of characters with questionable sexuality. Or even when acting in a questionable manner with other seiyuus of the same gender (Koyasu Takehito, I'm talking to you!). Or is this a new wave of super-resilient-to-logic anime fans? *boggles*

I think my icon sayts what I think of this.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Seriously.

I'll admit it - her voice is sexy, especially so when she's doing male roles. But that doesn't mean she's a lesbian. Where do people come up with this shit?

One of my favorite voice actors does a good amount of Shounen-ai/Yaoi roles - does that make him gay? No.

Never mind the fact that voice acting studios all over the world, not just Japan, often use women for the roles of young boys and femme men. I'm pretty sure Megumi Ogata isn't the world's first instance of an actress with a lot of male roles getting married.

Even if she is a lesbian, she's not going to fuck you anyway. Get over it.

..though I think Ogata Megumi is independent, usually the production companies the actors work for will decide where to send them; it's not like most seiyuu hand-pick their roles with deliberate care. Sometimes male seiyuu aren't even asked if they mind voicing boy's love roles; they just do it, because it's their JOB and makes them MONEY. Also yeah, a lot, and I mean a LOT of famous male roles are voiced by women, so that doesn't have anything to do with anything. As for the Sailor Uranus thing, just... oi. Hayami Shou plays a lot of psychopaths; does that make him an psychopath? XD Etc.

I am fairly disturbed by this "I cannot believe my lover got MARRIED!!!!!" business, man. There's fandom and then there's... whatever that is.

Actually, it's been proved that the type of role a seiyuu plays does has a profound effect on their behaviour in real life. For example, it was recently reported in the Asahi Shinbun that Hayashibara Megumi and Miki Shin'ichirou had been stealing Pokemon yet again. Matsumoto Rika is apparently readying her Pikachuu. So it does happen.

(By the way, I'm a ridiculously obsessive seiyuu fan and I've never heard the Ogata Megumi rumours - wow! O.O)
