HP Wankage: SS Fire & Ice Ahoy!
HP wankage on the good ship Fire & Ice...Myneut wanks on about characterization...

/So, I was looking over my reviews at Portkey, trying to decide whether to save them or the stories there once the new archive opens up...

Anyway, I came across this bit, and thought I would make a public service announcement. First, the quote in question:
You have THE BEST plots to put Draco and Gin together.... no matter how OOC either of them are. GOOD JOB!!! I loved it and it was wonderful and inspired and simply lovely

Now the PSA:

This is not a compliment. This is a slap in the face. If you disagree with my characterization, then you need to tell me this with specifics as to what you think is wrong about it, and back it up with examples from the books. But be warned that I may not agree with you, as I have taken the time to go over EVERY mention of both Ginny AND Draco in all five books, and my characterization is based solidly on my interpretation of their behavior as filtered through my knowledge of human nature. Mine is by no means the only way to interpret these characters, but considering that to me OOC is the worst insult you can give me as a fanfiction writer, you had best be prepared to back that accusation up or not make it in the first place. /

And the ego stroking begins:
//Unless you're writing an AU and you've acknowledged the fact that you're going to deviate from the standard characterization, telling someone that the characters they write are OOC is a serious insult imnsho.

Have you emailed said person and told them that you considered their "compliment" a slap in the face? Constructive criticism is constructive when you can back up WHY you're saying, "Well, I don't sit well with this."

::sneers at teeny-bopper "complimenter" and thinks said PERSON should be strung up by their toenails and beaten to death with copies of Book 5:://

Stroke it harder, baby!

It's an ickle wank for now, but it looks promising.

How DARE they like my fic!!!!

(Though, to be fair, I get annoyed when people who have bitched me out for moral lapses then tell me how hot they find the fic full of THOSE SAME MORAL LAPSES. "I can't believe you write chanslash. ... OMG the spanking scene!!!!!" Die, bitch.)

Actually, I kind of agree with her. OOC isn't a compliment, no matter how well you're writing OOC. Especially if you were trying so hard not to be.

But be warned that I may not agree with you, as I have taken the time to go over EVERY mention of both Ginny AND Draco in all five books, and my characterization is based solidly on my interpretation of their behavior as filtered through my knowledge of human nature.

I'm still kind of tempted to say "Ha ha!" though. Or at least mark her paper with a big "Must Do Better." Actually, maybe I'll be a grown-up and read the fic before I judge.

Or maybe I'll just point for a while. I haven't decided yet.

More words of wisdom from mynuet:

The more I read interviews with JKR, the more I am convinced that she has put a lot less thought into the complexities possible in her world than her fans have

Translation: Ms. Rowling wastes way too much time working on the backgrounds of minor characters such as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and neglects such obviously important central figures as Malfoy, Blaise Zabini, and Pansy Parkinson. It's obvious that the title of the first book was a typo, and should have been Draco Malfoy and Some Other Guy With a Scar On His Head. And no one dare suggest that Draco Malfoy is such a cardboard figure because he is just that unimportant to Ms. Rowling, who is just the writer and has no idea what she's doing anyway.

Her comments on the review definitely come under the heading of wanting to have your cake and eat it! I wonder when these guys are going to realise that is only one person who can write canon and in character and, like it or not, that is JK Rowling not because she is a goddess, but because she is writing the bloody books. Writers like this are ten a penny in the Harry Potter fandom and what she is saying is sadly nothing new.

Hold up. I'm confused.

I'm sure the fandom had this image of Draco long before the actor came on the scene, so we can't *entirely* blame him for this innovation. Where DID it start? She Who We Shall Not Name's fanfic?

Of course, the movie did *encourage* it in spades with that casting, but what else can you do?

It is in no way an insult to say that someone's interpretation of a character is OOC. It is a difference of opinion. The reviewer was otherwise complimenting the plotting and execution. It is NOT a backhanded compliment. I had D/G in Psychic Serpent for a little while and it was absolutely necessary for the character of Draco to depart from canon, because in canon he wouldn't be paired with anyone from Gryffindor in a million years, not Ginny, not Hermione and not Harry. JKR has made him flat and uninteresting (even as one of Umbridge's evil minions he was a bore in OotP) and fanfiction writers have rebelled against this by changing his character in a million ways. But if you depict him as anything thing other than a bigoted martinet--which I have done, and I freely admit--then you are departing from canon and he is officially OOC. Frankly, not really caring for the canon version of Draco, being told he was OOC was the highest compliment I could receive concerning his character. This author should take it as a compliment; the reviewer obviously thought she'd fleshed out the character beyond his two dimensional canon flatness. JKR shows know signs of doing this, so it's up to us, isn't it? If this author can't take a simple comment like this without getting all angsty over it, then she needs to stick to just showing her fics to her best friends. If you take your baby out into the world, there will be folks who don't like it or whose interpretation of it is vastly different from yours. Once it's out there it takes on a life of its own. --Barb

All right then... I understand that wankage by teenybopper authors who throw hissy fits over their pathetically Mary Sue stories are amusing as hell and worthy of being point-laughed at. Hell, I follow Deleterius on lj for precisely this reason.

I agree that canonically, D/G is not likely, seeing as to how Draco is made by Rowling into more or less the flatly evil 2D sort of character that, oh, pretty much all of her Slytherins (aside from Snape) are. I also agree with the fact that fanon!Draco is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord and deserves to be burned on a pile of leather pants.

That being said, wouldn't it be a bit reasonable to check out this author's stories at least before making a judgment and calling her a pathetic teenybopper author? When I point-laugh at Deleterius entries I DO go witness the horror first-hand before doing so.

But then again, I don't suppose this is the place for it. Oh well, just trying to be objective.

She's not a teen, so you guys can't go blaming it on youthful inexperience. Do with that knowledge what you will. I won't say much either way on the subject, as I have been known to pull 'wank' myself. I get where's she's coming from, but I get what a lot of you guys are saying to. I guess I know enough about Mynuet to know WHY the review offended her, so her reaction was not so surprising to me. Everybody gets ranty though. I'm certainly guilty of it. I may get crucified for this, but can't she just be allowed to rant? I don't see it as really hurting anyone. But as she is allowed to rant, you guys are allowed to rant about her rants too. It's a vicious circle.

What the hell is wrong with you people?! Is this all you do?! Just talk trash about Myn all day because you have no real friends or family members (that actually want you stupid idiotic asses) to converse with.

I’ll have you know the Myn is a GREAT author and she is NOT OOC. If you have a problem with them, then just don’t read her fics. You’re all probably just bitching because you can’t write fic as well as her.

Oh, and I know there's going to be a bunch of that are pissed off with me because I ruined your on-the-rag-bitching streak, but frankly I don't give a damn what you say. I hate people like you and you can all burn in hell because none of you have the balls just to say something to someone's face or just let something go.

God it was on her livejournal! This is one of the few places people can actually voice their opinions and rant without caring who they annoy. People should be saying whatever they want and you shouldn't be critizing anyone, asses, because none of you are perfect.

Uh... what's the problem? I think the OP's point was twofold:
1) It's negative feedback, not positive, to call an author's work OOC.
2) A reviewer who actually thinks OOCness is a good thing is monumentally stupid.

She does head a little wankwards in the whole 'very careful interpretation' thing, but hell, if I got a review as stupid as that one, I'd probably assume I had a better take on canon then the reviewer myself.

Ok so I'm a little late on the wank but I would like to say a few things. I absolutely adore Mynuet's writing! With all the trash in fandom I'm surprised to see her of all people discussed. I am more than willing to "stroke her ego" to read good fiction. I would guess there are 1000 bad writers out there on FF.net to everyone of her quality. I truly hope no one with talent has decided to stop posting do to being wanked or flamed. I do not write so perhaps people will choose to discount my opinion but for me the bottom line is reading fanfiction is my number one source enjoyment. I get more enjoyment out of rereading good stories than my cable, netflix, going to the movies, etc. People pay for entertainment $30 cable $20 Netflix $8 per movie so what is wrong with compliments to stoke an authors ego? I feel Mynuet's writing is worth that and a whole lot more. I would not care if Mynuet was a drug addicted prostitute who thinks she is God I enjoy her stories therefore I compliment her. Do you people really care if an actor or an athlete has an ego? I'm sure a lot of them do but that is not what most people care about it is the product they deliver. I feel it should be this way with fanfiction too. The fact that Mynuet is a nice gal going through a lot adds to my want to defend her but I truly think she should not have to worry about being wanked due to talent alone. Thanks
Angela
