HP Arrogance
First post, but IMO this is wanky for the sheer arrogance. In summary, FA head honcho, Heidi squees over her site being nominated for a Webby. While recognizing FA probably won't win she adds the following:

Of course, we're up against LiveJournal and Friendster, but as I just wrote in an email to bradfitz, if FictionAlley, for some bizarre reason, actually wins, it's a victory for LJ as well, because LJ really is a part of FA's community - hence, things like fiction_alley!

Yeah, so every single LJer is a FA member. Not to mention that LJ is where most of the wank can be found.

I'm surmising it's about both that and your icon asking people to vote for you cos you're claiming you're going to come last. That comes across as the sort of reverse psychology used by kids in primary school. i.e. far too obvious and an insult to people's intelligence.

Well, we're boldly asking people to vote for us; we made the decision to put such a request up after looking at LJ, SuicideGirls and Wikipedia and seeing that they'd all done the same thing. So I don't really think that "reverse psychology" is terribly necessary - we've already done what I called the gratuitous begging for votes. If someone thinks it's icky to ask people to vote for you, they're certainly within their rights to say so, but it seems to be part & parcel of the process. I mean, we didn't even know about the People's Choice award at first</a>.

As I said to someone else here, I think it all depends on what your definition of "part" is. I was using "part of" to mean that LJ was (as I now go to my M-W.com dictionary) "an essential portion or integral element" of FA. That is a true fact. It is an essential portion of the community feel of FA. It is an integral element of FA. What is arrogant about our recognizing and acknowledging that?

If that definition of "part" doesn't occur to you (general you, not you in particular) when you read my post, then you're not reading what I wrote, and you're not hearing what I said. You (specific you, not general you) wrote that "it's unfair to expect people to take a different meaning from your words than the most logical one" - but I have tried and tried to see why the reading you're giving it is the most logical one. I've read and reread the dictionary definition of "part" and the closest I can come to the read you, and others, are giving to my post involves the definition of "part" as "one of the constituent elements of a plant or animal body" - like you read it and thought I was saying that FA was a ferrett and the entirity of LJ was the tail. Is that how you read it? Because I can see that as a possible read, but it isn't the most logical one.

I don't think I'm overstepping anything to say that you seem to have issues with people who you tar with the BNF term, but I have no idea why, or how you've formulated these ideas and concepts. I also was under the impression that F_W-ers only engaged in ego-deflation and mockery when it was justified. In other words, a post to F_W saying, "Oh, that Heidi8 has a poll asking people to choose between Xanadu and Grease II! She sucks!" would be laughed at. It would be a post mocking me, but the mockery would be silly, pointless and really pretty gratuitous. If someone wants to try and deflate my ego by, oh I don't know, criticizing my score on the 80s music quiz, they're certainly at liberty to do so, but again, it's just plain silly.

And if I hadn't shown up here to post my replies, people would've just called me arrogant and intimated that I thought I was too good to explain myself. Again, damned if I did, damned if I didn't. Once we were nominated for the WEBBY, there was no way to avoid showing up here on F_W, was there? If we hadn't posted about it, one of the FAPers would've, and then someone would've called the mods passive-aggressive. If we had banned all discussion of it on FA (in defiance of our principle not to bar topics) we would've been justifiably slammed for censorship. Isn't that a little absurd, to know that people would engage in mockery because a third party - a party completely separate from the fandom - *likes* the site?

One last side note about the Crystal thing - I actually haven't read a post on the thread - the posts are so nested now that I can't sort through it at all - but I was pointed to a Cliff's Notes about it because someone used the PASTEDE ON but in reference to one of the FA April Fool's "cover photos" and thought I'd think it funny.
