Slash ruins the nobility of the the characters. And it's dirty
In the Lord of the Rings Community at LJ, here's what anobodygirl says about slash and LOTR fanfic...

Okay, this is a silly question but...

Does it bother anyone else that there is LOTR slash?

I mean, for me personally, it just kind of ruins the nobility of the characters, you know?
I've never actually read any good LOTR slash, but I've read slash.
And it's dirty.
And reading about Legolas and Aragorn getting it on in Fangorn Forest really isn't my cup of tea.

And obviously I understand that it's not my place to judge them.
This is just my personal opinion.
And I was just wondering what everyone else thought.

Hmm..she's says... And it's dirty but she's not judging?

Started out slow, but close to 100 comments already...Here's the original thread...

It's dirty

using an "innocent question" as an excuse to air one's insulting opinions about other people *snickers* So that later, when confronted about these insults, you can just claim "hey i just wanted to ask a question!" LOL

You know what I can't stand?
When people feel the need to do this.
You know.
Hit enter after every sentence.
And TYPE IN RANDOM CAPITALS!!!
It's disjointed.
Fragmented even.
Then I have a hard time following their arguments.
And thus laugh at them.
A lot.
I also can't stand when people are looking for specific reactions.
And then get pissed at people who disagree.
THANK YOU!!

Tolkien is dead, Dave. Tolkien is dead, Dave. Tolkien is dead, Dave.

IMHO, the OP wasn't as wanky as the one further down the thread banging on about how using any idea ever concieved of by someone else is like buggering their children.

I don't like LOTR fanfic much myself, because of my long-running relationship with the books and a general lack of interest. But Christ on a crumpet. He's dead! He doesn't care anymore! He's with that nice Mr Lewis in heaven now and doesn't give a shit.

Invent your own characters, do whatever the hell you like. But don't have the nerve to take characters created by someone else, and form them as you'd like. No one has that right.

Yes we do. It's called 'fair use', dipshit. And if he thinks that Tolkien actually created every damn bit of LotR himself, he didn't at all borrow to create the elves, or hobbits, the Rohirrim weren't based on any European cultures at all and JRR just whipped the idea of a ring of power out of his own arse... well, that's very sad. Boy should read a bit more widely. Start with some myths. Except he might not like them, because OMG they ripped off Tolkien!!1!

There does that help you any?
TWINCEST IS FUCKING DISGUSTING.
I don't care about gay rights, or whatever.
It is not only illegal, but it is wrong.
And I only read it because a friend of mine writes it.
And I happen to be good at English.
And I NEVER said slash was disturbing.
I just said that LOTR slash bothered me.

Yes, that helps me immensly. Now if you could please explain what incest has to do with gay rights we could all skip ahead to the book burning ~

Oh we're back to the "characters in LotR are pure and sacred and shalt not be marred by the eVol slash"

*sigh* We slash the bible, we slash cartoon characters, we freaking slash real people, but oh NO, we must keep away from the holy Lord of the Rings.

Hell, why would anyone think to slash the Fellowship? Hot guys running around with phallic objects with nary a female in sight, I don't know. We must be insane.

Legolas, Aragorn, Eomer, Boromir, Frodo, Sam, MerryandPippin are hot, they are slashy, and some of the slash fanfiction is actually good, not much, it's fanfiction, slash or not, the gems are hard to find, but it exists AND when it comes to cultural poaching NOTHING is sacred. Get over it, if you don't like Aragorn getting it on with Boromir or Merry and Pippin being extremely sweet and romantic with each other DON'T READ IT.

Is that so hard?

Hey, that's a good one! Good enough to upload old icons again, even.

anobodygirl: There's no hypocrisy.

To make this move work, your open hand performs a suggested half circle in the recipients field of vision, young padawan. Better start out with easier tasks. Also, have some midichlorians.

bathory_acolyte: I like also how he actually loves Arwen, rather than having just a lustful attraction for her, to the point that he's prepared to see her sail into the West.

Yeah, and thats because he saves all his lustful attraction for Legolas! Hasn't anybody seen the movies?

mailea: That is why everyone has their own opinion, and that is the beauty of America. God Bless America! *salutes*

You're so conceited, Claire. You're so conceited! You're just like, full of yourself. Why are you like that?

mailea: What really confuses me, and believe me I do not read it, is Woodcest.

And like some others, here I truly wondered for a moment what the posters problem with is, let's say, two beech ents getting it on. I am so naive.

Has this idiot, or any of these idiots, ever read anything besides LOTR and crappy fanfic? Just answered my own question, didn't I.

Seriously, though. I love how fans of this ilk seem to think that never in the whole history of mankind has anyone, ever, ripped off other authors until those nasty fanfic writers, like, invented it -- along with every other vice and perversion. Yep, no work of literature involved gay sex, incest, rape, underage sex, BDSM, or other people's characters until the first depraved fangirl recorded Kirk's tawdry love for Spock.

Personally, LOTR slash's very existence, the knowledge that it exists offends me sensibilities. I somehow managed to naively once stumble across a slash story and before I knew it felt my mind being raped.

AHAHAHAHA! *wheezes*

There's a milk joke here somewhere, but it's too early in the morning.

I mean, for me personally, it just kind of ruins the nobility of the characters, you know?
I've never actually read any good LOTR slash, but I've read slash.
And it's dirty.
And reading about Legolas and Aragorn getting it on in Fangorn Forest really isn't my cup of tea.

Proving once again that there are geeks, and then there are industrial strength, super size LOTR-lovin' geeks. I've never seen anything of this fandom that hasn't consisted of super slimy nerd spooge.

Of course in a story like LOTR, as you turn each page you're guessing what's going to happen, how things will develop. But I think when you turn the last page, the story concluded, people should take it as it is, and not continue to read between lines, rather than along them.

man, this is always the argument the anti-fanfic people trot out. personally, i find the idea that we're all supposed to absorb books or shows or whatever like good little puppets and not react in any way, not read and interpret and argue over motivation and underlying themes and do all that other stuff (including fanfiction) that comes along with having someone else's work affect you, rather horrifying.

I like the girl who goes I say "Live and let die", "To each their own" and all that. Not quite how the saying goes, dear.

"When you were young, and your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
(you know you did you know you did you know you did)
But if this ever changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die!
*dramatic orchestra!*"

I'm aware that Tolkien would probably not approve, neither of explicit sex scenes nor of homosexuality. But I strongly suspect he's lucky to be unaware of most fan fiction, het or slash.

Well, yes. He is unaware of most fanfiction, het or slash. WHAT WITH HIM BEING DEAD AND ALL.

Well, at least she's kind enough to state that it's HER opinion instead of yelling at people.

But "It's dirty"? What kind of argument is that? :P

(I mean, I think Homestar Runner slash is squicky and gross, but I'm not gonna say "Ew, it's dirty!". ;P)

The best part of what I've seen so far is that the first poster lists a bunch of explanations as to why slash is wrong from the MOVIE, and then references Tolkien's writing as a source. *rolls eyes*

You know, I ask myself that question every day. It helps remind me that I'm supposed to be clawing at that box people have shoved me into.

People who bitch about the existence LoTR fanfic. Tolkien would have creamed his pants had he seen people writing their own pieces of the mythic cycle he set up. I've spent the last three days nattering on about Tolkien's creative philosophy in lieu of anything more substantial to put in this fucking paper, and about the only thing that isn't bullshit is this: Tolkien. Wanted. Others. To. Participate.

Arda is supposed to be a living mythology; if Tolkien were the only one to ever write stories in it, the force of myth would've died with him, and he would have failed. Fanfic is exactly what he was hoping would happen. I can pull out some quotes from his letters if you like. He might not have found some directions fanfic takes palatable (or comprehensible-- girly!Legolas boggled him), but he damned sure wouldn't have spent his time complaining about people taking his ideas and running with them.

Damn right, sister! You are so right to point out to those lucky poor people who noticed the slash plastered all over the movies in twelve foot high neon lettering saying "Aragorn and Legolas are so doing it!" who write Legolas/Aragorn that it wasn't Aragorn Legolas took into Fangorn for a private little tryst on the way home. Legolas/Gimli OTP!!!

Damn. I need a Legolas/Gimli icon for my shiny new chock-full-of-icons paid account. Any suggestions?
