Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Timid

Just a reminder

This may be off-topic or even totally out of line, since I'm hardly a mod, but I just felt like a few things should be brought up for all the nice new folks:

http://www.journalfen.net/userinfo.bml?user=fandom_wank

1. "If you want to go trolling or harassing people for the fun of it, then do us the courtesy of leaving the community first."

2. "Please do not link to a minor's entry in fandom_wank unless the entry is in a community."

3. I don't think the user info actually mentions this, but protected entries are off-limits, even if you're on that person's friends list. If it's locked, it's not fair to drag that out into the open, wanky or not. An entry that was public but then locked after wanking started--that's a grey area, and I don't know the ruling on that. Anyone?

4. If it's not fandom-related (politics, religion, etc.), it goes in [info]otf_wank. If you're involved, it goes to [info]i_wank. There's also [info]fandom_rant, [info]fw_offline, [info]rpg_wank, [info]gaia_wank, and [info]fandom_lounge.

Feel free to delete this or smack me if this is inappropriate. I would have posted it in fandom_lounge, but wasn't sure that the people who need to see it would have.

Not at people who have been here a while. There was one FW entry where the OP was trolling offsite, and then another where a locked entry was posted. Again, I was afraid this was inappropriate, and people should read the community info anyway, but I just hoped pointing a few things out might head off some trouble.

Well, I wasn't sure I needed to be the one to say it, but it seemed more efficient than running around like a two-year-old wailing for moddy mommy to come make the chirren play nice. I'm still not sure I should have said anything.

For 3) That's how I understand it:

If people lock their stuff, said stuff doesn't belong here.

However, if people decide to put their stuff up openly and unprotected on the internet and then later reconsider to lock or delete it, tough luck for them.
If they expect the folks of F_W to terminate their discussions, wash their brains and empty their caches for it, they will just have to live with the disappointment.

Correct, I hope?

And as far as I am concerned, this reminder was welcome.

You are correct. If it's posted in public, it's fair game for snarking, even if it's later locked.

I think these things needed to be pointed out in light of all the extra members FW has picked up lately. Thanks for taking the time.

While we're at it, I'd like to draw attention to this one too:

We reserve the right to read fandom_wank threads without a bunch of graphic porn popping up on our screens ... If you must post something graphic in a fandom_wank post, put it behind a cut and mark it "not work friendly."

Every time I use ellipses now, I feel like Crystal.

May I be your minion, and follow you around with a harp (or any other stringed instrument of your choosing)?

I'm glad things like the Crystalwank have brought new mockers to our fair shores, but considering that we only have about three rules, it shouldn't be too hard to follow them.

Hm. What, then, would be the stance on mailing lists where the messages would only generally be viewable to members? Okay as long as it's open membership, but if they require you to be approved in some manner, it's not alright...?

I'm pretty sure that I know the answer to this one, but what about cases when the person's age isn't revealed. If there's no way for us to know the wanker's age, should we just assume that they're an adult, or should we be cautious and not wank 'em until we can be sure? What if they *say* they're all grown up, but something makes you doubt it, but they're still claiming to be over 18?

Yeah, there are probably stupid questions, but it seems important for me to know.

If I can add a couple of things...

There are some posts at [info]system about what Zorro and Robin consider to be okay vs abusive as far as harassment and posting personal info. It's good to have that journal on your friends list.

You can get flamed over posting emails. All the actual netiquette stuff I've read admonishes people to remember that email isn't always totally private, but a lot of folks will still get bent all out of shape if you post stuff they send you.

My take on that there's a difference between email that's sent in confidence between friends (or ex-friends) and email that (should) be more businesslike. A rejection email regarding a fic you submitted to an archive? Postable. Your soon-to-be-ex-friend's confession that she's pregnant? Not postable. Flames from some asshat who is afraid to confront you in public? Postable. Anything the sender specifically asks you to keep private? Not postable. Remember, that's just my personal criteria.

It is common courtesy to obscure the sender's email and IP address.

IMO, if you receive a death threat you should post it as publically as possible as quickly as possible. Don't bother obscuring the sender's email/IP.
