This just in: Fiction Alley is NOT wanky
The grand defense continues in the Webby Awards review section. I'm quoting a lot of reviews because I'm not sure if you have to register to get to this page. There are multiple reviews gushing about the wonderfulness of FA, but a few may be of interest to "external sources": #3 is in there early with the pointy stick of doom: Nice Community? Nope, it's a huge pool of wank. #13 voices another familiar complaint: I find the site is absolutely huge and very difficult to navigate. The forums are large and intimidating for a newbie. There are so many forums, it's hard to know what to post where, and if, God forbid, you post something in the wrong place, the mods are very rude about it. They actually count posters' numbers of characters to determine if a post is a one-liner or not. #17 with the wank again: FA? I was extremely surprised that FA was nominated for a Webby, considering it is one of the wankiest places I've ever seen. #18, NUH UH! It's not wanky!
Hi! I'm so glad FA's been nominated (it's NOT wanky) *grrr* I just wanted to show my support for a site that's grown so fast, the place is impressive. I especially like the non-netspeak policy. #22 says that we're just jealous... or something. Gotta love it Well, FA does tend to suck you in, but frankly, I wish other fandoms had places for themselves. To be honest, most of the wank accusations at FA/FAP are derived from the fact that it is the community in the HP fandom. Most of the other communities are offshoots from FA (though not all).
That's why they have my vote. Hell, I don't know what he's saying. Other fandoms don't have forums? What? #23 says ask not for whom the wank splurts, it splurts for thee! The wank is not FA's In my experience, the "wank" that people complain about with respect to FA really isn't generated *on* the site; it comes from external sources who feel it is their job to mock what are really usually cases of a small minority being unreasonable, while FA tries to take a consistent and free-thinking stance. (Witness current wanks on: the petition about cross-gen kissing and this very nomination.) Also, poor site navigation is an advantage, because wandering around lost is an exciting opportunity to make new friends. The boards can be a bit overwhelming, but the admin team realizes that. A lot of the focus of pages like "Point me!" is to try to help people navigate the site, and honestly, it's not *that* hard to figure things out with a little attention. I know the team plans to continue improving the site, too, including upgrading so that users can search for similar threads more easily, and other features. #54 sounds familiar, no? Not for young adults Fiction Alley caters primarily to young adults in that fans of Harry Potter is their target audience. It is a good website but has one major flaw: they allow discussions on the possibilities of romance between inappropriate partners: child with adult (pedophilia), child with sibling (incest), and child with animal (bestiality).
For that reason, and that reason alone, I could not possibly cast a vote for Fiction Alley. JOO DON SAY THAT I KEEL JOO!! from #56 False claims
Someone said that FA allows discussions of "children" with adults, siblings and animals, but the site has *just* explained that they follow the principles of the American Library Association -
*** Private groups and public authorities in various parts of the country are working to ... censor content in schools, to label “controversial” views, ... and to purge libraries. These actions apparently rise from a view that our national tradition of free expression is no longer valid... Every silencing of a heresy, every enforcement of an orthodoxy, diminishes the toughness and resilience of our society and leaves it the less able to deal with controversy and differences.... It is in the public interest for publishers and librarians to make available the widest diversity of views and expressions, including those that are unorthodox or unpopular with the majority. ... Publishers, librarians, and booksellers do not need to endorse every idea or presentation they make available. It would conflict with the public interest for them to establish their own political, moral, or aesthetic views as a standard for determining what should be published or circulated. Publishers and librarians serve the educational process by helping to make available knowledge and ideas required for the growth of the mind and the increase of learning. They do not foster education by imposing as mentors the patterns of their own thought. The people should have the freedom to read and consider a broader range of ideas than those that may be held by any single librarian or publisher or government or church. It is wrong that what one can read should be confined to what another thinks proper.***
Since the *books* make offhand references to Lily/Squid and Aberforth/Goat, it's unfair to expect a Harry Potter site to avoid all such humerous references to what some deem "beastiality" when there's nothing graphic discussed in those threads. Since Hermione spends time in school with a crush on at least one of her professors, and two of her classmates have crushes on a Centaur who's a professor (and is he a being or a beast anyway?) the complaints made by those who want to silence discussion of themes and concepts and topics *from the books* sound much closer to things said by those who want to burn the books because they promote witchcraft than things said by true fans. Some interesting positive reviews: The anti-dumbass regs are working really well, according to reviewer #8: Netspeak and other things that take away from the eloquence of a post are forbidden, so you don't have to wade through a bunch of babble to get to some intelligent discussion. Speculations are insightful and fascinating. Everywhere, there are rules to help keep the posts focused and on topic. We find out from #9 that FA also invented slash! I did not know that. Fiction Alley is very awesome and unique...hey! we basically have our own language (Schnoogle, Glomp, Slash, etc...)! #11 likes it because people there don't off themselves there. I'm addicted to Fiction Alley...
I've been a member of Fiction Alley since September last year, and I love it. It provides me with a sense of community, and unlike many community sites on the internet these days, it's not depressing, with an emphasis on suicide. There are a few suicidal Harry Potter stories, but if you don't want to read them, there are a range of humorous, romantic, adventurous and tons of other genres stories.... Yeah, I always hate it when I'm at a party and someone drowns themselves in the punch. It's like, such a bummer, and it makes the punch taste funny. #24 is.... Okay, I'll admit it. I'm just sharing the misery here. The Many Sides of FA Kytti Finnegan post 24 of 56 4-23-2004, 21:35 Friendly Atmosphere (The Most Comfortable Community on the Web)

Yes Ladies and Gentlemen, all these things are what make FA what it is...
FICTION ALLEY! Two Four Six Eight, who do we appreciate! *looks around* *ahem* Sorry. #28 also likes those rules that keep anarchy at bay, especially ths one against dogs and cats mating in the streets: My absolute favorite part of FAP is the strict rules against one-liners, poor grammar, anything even close to flaming, etc. Otherwise, the boards could easily degenerate into a wishy-washy, server-crashing conglomeration of "yeah"s and "ooh! :)"s and "i agree"s and "ur stupid"s. Instead, every single post is another step into the world of HP and/or fan fiction (well, except for the OT boards, but that's another story) and every thread is a thesis statement on JKR's work. Absolutely fabulous! Wow. That shows me. I did not realize that every single tread there was a thesis statement. #27 and #34 you just have to go read. *snerk* #35 tells us about the truly universal appeal of FA No matter which ship you sail, which character you fangirl, or which Harry Potter book is your favorite, you can find something here that will interest you. Wow. You mean at FA I can talk about any two characters in Harry Potter getting it on? Really? Any of them? I don't see why the internet should even have other websites. FA has everything you could possibly need! I like this one (#55) just for all the fandom terms. Better than the Real Thing The Harry Potter fandom has grown through the years, for fans waiting for the books, the films, for academic and popular discussions of the Harry POtter universe. Fictionalley is not the only fandom community out there- livejournal has HP members daily plugging their pairings- but it provides a safe space to discuss and imagine the HP dom away from canon, through canon, and best of all, slashing the canon. The imaginative value of this community is immeasurable, and it provides the best of the Net experience, creativity, ingenuity, community, by getting the fans and fandoms together. If this fails to amuse, please check back later for the comments. I hope we have enough arsenic laced Doritos for our FAP guests. [ ETA: Oh crap! I can't believe I missed #21. Sound familiar? A tough, tough choice Well, two of my favourite sites are up for nomination - LiveJournal and FictionAlley, and it *really* was a tough call between them, but as my LiveJournal community is essentially an extension of the FictionAlley community, it's FictionAlley that gets the vote. Of course you have to put that PC my in there or people get all huffy with you. ^_^ Thanks zozma] [ ETA #2:What better way for FA to get votes than to post bad reviews for the competition? OMG, that's clever! Ick SG is just a glorified porn site with a "community" of horny guys chasing girls with more piercings than brains. It shouldn't be in this category at all. And how do we know this is a FA member? I personally think all the negative comments are from ex members who got thrown off of sg in violation of the rules. We know it's a FA member, because she can't shut the hell up. My two cents
I am not a bitter ex-member who was kicked out because I was violating the rules of the site, I am just a normal person who has seen the site a couple of times. In my humble opinion, SuicideGirls is a glorified porn site. There are many females on the net, and some, like me, aren't particulary interested in seeing pictures of naked women. I want a site where I can converse with my friends, meet interesting new people and have fun. The name of the site screams 'ANGSTY TEENS!'. I find the repeated references to suicide offensive. The people who desire suicide have issues, that they need to discuss with someone, and are not to be taken lightly. Although I love LJ, I find that Fiction Alley provides me with a sense of community more so than the rest because of the friendliness of the members. If you feel suicidal, join Fiction Alley, become happy, and enjoy life the way God meant for us to. Remember people. God loves leather pants, not naked women! The "glorified porn" phrase catches on: Disgusting
This site really IS just a glorified porn site. It doesn't deserve to be on this list. -- Suicide Girls is "erotica" not "porn". There is a difference. Erotica is an art form, pornography can be considered exploitation, plain and simple. -- no matter what other name you put on it, it's a porn site
"erotica" is yet another glorified name for porn. -- pimp slap Glorified porn is right-there are no aspects of the photography or styling(even lithium picnics sets, who generally does great work)that are interesting or creative, and contrary to mass belief, tons of body mods, multicolored hair and painting "slut" on yourself in your chosen medium is not necessarily creative or interesting. I know it is an amateur site, but wouldn't you expect them to be a bit more choosy in their model selection? LOL. This one has to be from a FA member. Nobody else could possibly be that pendantic. No. Just say no to objectifying women.
Porn, erotica, smut, whatever - it's still wrong, and does not deserve to be in this category.
The end. Well I guess that's it then!]
