Current mood:*sporfle!*
Current music:XTC, "Dear God".

The Amazon.Com reviews on Sarah McLachlan's Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff are all spooged up with Godwank!

You see, on this album there's a cover of the excellent XTC song, "Dear God". The song's lyrics are... more than a little rebellious and rather dark. "If there's one thing I don't believe in, it's you, dear god."

A whole SLEW of Christian listeners are terribly, terribly offended.

"I am so shocked by this song I have asked my entire prayer group to put out a boycott on it! It is a sheer blasphemy of all we know is true. If she is speaking out of anger about something personal, she should at least admit to it. Otherwise I will never again buy another one of her cd's. Because I know God is ever loving and ever forgiving. I hope He forgives her for writing these lyrics!"

Woah, woah, woah...

Wait a minute... I had to do a presentation on Satanic music for Mass Media and their Influences. Bands like "Deicide" had pretty much no Christian uprising... yet this does?

Bitch, please.

Is it wrong of me to admit that I actually listened to just that song off the album all the time while I was a freshman just to annoy my super-Christian roommate? ^_^

I had that CD and it occured to me that I only liked a handful of the songs there, so I sold it. I didn't even care for her Dear God cover, but I LOVE the XTC version. Heh

Amazon reviews are a prime source of wank.

Hell I remember looking for a Go West CD [yes shut up, I like music from the 80's and early 90's] and found in one of the reviews that someone, for reasons beyond me, decided to tell the sad story of a former friend and his obessesion with 'Pretty Woman'.

What this had to do with Go West I don't know.

I cannot believe that someone who wrote such beautiful lyrics such as in the songs "I Will Remember You" and "Angel" can possibly come up with "Dear God"

Because Christians or believers in general don't have a monopoly on "beautiful lyrics"? Duh.

Strange, I don't remember anyone getting offended when that first hit the airwaves. Different climate? Or else I was listening to the right radio station. No one even bitched that whatsisface's kid did the opening and closing lines.

However I don't like the idea of Sarah McLachlan covering it just because I don't like her music so her covering it gives me much paininess. Oh well, so I just turn on some Randy Newman and I'm all happy again.

I now want to download this song. The question is, am I commiting a worse sin by stealing devil-music, or is the stealing justified by the omgevolness! of the music in question?

Hmm...

Although, as I recall, Christian music is the most downloaded music out there, so I guess Christians are pro-fileshare?

Geez. Even in music this stuff is confusing.

I have it on good authority that when God heard of this artist's lyrics, He ran into His room and fell backwards onto His bed and cried for hours because some musician didn't believe in Him.

Then He are some Rocky Road ice cream, watched 'Angel' and cried on the phone to Jesus.

Because I know God is ever loving and ever forgiving. I hope He forgives her for writing these lyrics!

Somewhere, some supreme being of some sort is sitting around thinking, "you'd better be grateful I'm ever loving and forgiving, because I've had about enough of you sticking your nose into other people's forgiveness. And what have you ingested, what strange substance did I manage to give you the ingredients for, that you would post something this ignorant in public without bothering to find out that SHE DIDN'T WRITE THE LYRICS? *being mutters to self* Ever loving and forgiving... Ever loving and forgiving... Ever loving and forgiving..."

These people are a mite easily hurt, aren't they? It's at times like these I like to recite a favorite poem of mine and see how many people have to go to the emergency room after the blast of, you know, words shatters their funny bones into a thousand fragments:

God, A Poem

A nasty surprise in a sandwich,
A drawing-pin caught in your sock,
The limpest of shakes from a hand which
You'd thought would be firm as a rock,

A serious mistake in a nightie,
A grave disappointment all round
Is all that you'll get from th'Almighty,
Is all that you'll get underground.

Oh he said: 'If you lay off the crumpet
I'll see you alright in the end.
Just hang on until the last trumpet.
Have faith in me, chum-I'm your friend.'

But if you remind him, he'll tell you:
'I'm sorry, I must have been pissed-
Though your name rings a sort of a bell. You
Should have guessed that I do not exist.

'I didn't exist at Creation,
I didn't exist at the Flood,
And I won't be around for Salvation
To sort out the sheep from the cud-

'Or whatever the phrase is. The fact is
In soteriological terms
I'm a crude existential malpractice
And you are a diet of worms.

'You're a nasty surprise in a sandwich.
You're a drawing-pin caught in my sock.
You're the limpest of shakes from a hand which
I'd have thought would be firm as a rock,

'You're a serious mistake in a nightie,
You're a grave disappointment all round-
That's all you are, ' says th'Almighty,
'And that's all that you'll be underground.'

~ James Fenton

Ah, listen the the screams of agony...sweet Thames run softly, till I end my song.

Quick note on "Dear God". Didn't anyone notice she is singing a song to someone she claims not to believe in thus confirming that she actually does believe in him or why would she be talking to him? Ya get it?

Wow. Came up with that all by yourself, did you? And thought it was such a special insight that you just have to share it with the world?

It must be nice to be stupid. Everything would just be like magic.

I was told a couple of day ago that all music is evil because of the pagan rhythms. I figured it wouldn't be the time to mention that I enjoy shaking my ass and watching myself.

*shakes head* Those wacky Christians.

But that being said, I think that song in brilliant and sad in its way. But people really should be less concerned with Sarah McLachlans's supposed sin and worry about thier inability to forgive her.

*rolls eyes*

Y'know, stuff like this generally has one of three effects on me, or any combination of the three at once.

1) I'm reminded of my Sunday School teacher telling us that she could not allow her children to watch Fievel Goes West because of the song his sister sing in the saloon.

2) I'm reminded of a friend who liked to bitch about the difference in Gods between the Old and New Testaments, and usually ended his rants with "We DEMAND CONSISTENCY! WE WANT A VENGEFUL GOD, DAMMIT!"

3) I feel the need to bang my head against something and become a Buddhist.

Probably not the reaction they were hoping for.
