Slash wank, take #78,894,569
'cause these are always fun, right?

My favorite obscure fandom (in which I've been slacking abominably for the last ... year ...) is Wild Wild West, dedicated to a t.v. show that ended about 15 years before my birth. It's fun, most of the fans are great, and the series itself is the Gayest Thing EVAR. You Smallville kids think your show's got The Gay? How many undoctored screencaps do YOU have of Lex tied spread-eagle on a big gold-embroidered bed, wearing black leather chaps, while a man holding a riding crop leers at him? How much naked mud wrestling does Clark get up to? And has anybody gone through an entire episode dressed only in a feather skirt and a necklace?

I naively thought it was a practically wank-free fandom. The people I associate with are mostly veteran fans who've learned to chill the fuck out, and the writing quality is very high overall. I'd been told that there were a few psychos out there, but I'd written those off as fandom ghost stories. Til now. Today I heard from someone who read some very good gen stories and wrote the writer to compliment her, only to get a psycho rant in return because the author'd somehow found out the reader was a slash fan. I had to go check out this woman's message board.

http://www.wildwildwest.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=597&SearchTerms=slash

Sadly, it's an old wank, and many of the posts have been edited or deleted. I'm given to understand that it was much larger when it occured, but what's left is still much fun.

Edit: I was just told by an eye-witness that the thread is, in fact, complete. My mistake.

During a discussion of character development in canon, someone posts this link http://www.frii.com/~wanderer/writerguide.html to a very thorough summary of what's known about the characters' lives. Everybody oohs and aahs over the geekery involved.

Enter the mod. This is the one who freaked out over a slash writer sending her positive feedback. She reveals the horrible truth about the summary linked: it was written by a SLASH WRITER. And she publishes slash 'zines with a reputation for high production values and meticulous editing! OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Even though it was only a summary of what's known in canon, with no speculation about slash whatsoever, it is tainted. TAINTED!

Well, that specific page
(http://www.frii.com/~wanderer/writerguide.html) is pretty accurate with what they've gleaned with respect to the basic facts from the series, yes.

However, when you look at what sort of "zines" the author publishes (aka slash), it's clear they have no qualms about completely throwing out the characters we see in the series to solicit such utterly preposterous and, IMMHO, offensive contradictions. Very sad...

I guess since I've brought it up and I went so far as to make an editorial comment about it, I should point out a couple facts about this particular unfortunate fan genre:

1. Slash has nothing whatsoever to do with homosexuality beyond basic, broad setting.

If you thought it did, I suggest you speak candidly with a decent-sized number of self-respecting gentlemen who are homosexual.

2. Slash has everything to do with varying levels of vicimization.

And it just gets better from there. After all, everyone knows that the only legitimate reason to write fanfiction is to Mary Sue yourself into your favorite characters' pants. Everything else is just sick.

I'm going to go back to my non-psychohosebeast-ridden corner now, if it's all the same to you.

I have, but I hang out in the anime fandoms. Basically, the idea is that women write slash because het sex is too personal/uncomfortable to them and that they turn the submissive partner into something Girl Scouts can beat up and take the lunch money of and who needs the comforting sexual attention arms of his partner because they need to deal with their own issues with men.

Bad slash does this, but so does bad het, so I just say we take an army of fanfiction critics to it indiscriminatly.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that she's mixing up "slash" and "slasher" (as in horror-movie slasher)?

Or that she doesn't seem like much fun to party with? ;o

Slash has nothing to do with homosexuality?

Wouldn't that be like saying that het has nothing to do with heterosexuality?

Is there a level of idealization in written romance over real life? Sure. Is there a definite stink of stereotypes? Sure. But to say that slash has nothing to do with homosexuality just boggles my mind. If slash ain't gay, then how the Hell do you have a fictional gay relationship? Is it not possible to have one? Really, I'm confused here.

Snort, I love how she mentions "After one hell of a lot of analysis on this astrophysicist's part..." she's determined that the claims of slashers* have no merit.

Because that alleged degree in astrophysics makes her an expert in psychology, of course.

*Mind you the claims she lists ("two men absolutely cannot live and work that close and not get physical" or the variant "two people cannot be so close/be soulmates without..." ) do have very little merit, largely because she's presented them in the wankiest possible format, and most slashers with a brain would not state something like that categorically.

I also love that she *points out* that the pilot ep, written by the creator, was gay as all hell, and the network toned it down -- just after saying that, because the creator was gay and forthright about it, if he'd wanted the characters to have any aspects of homosexuality, he would have put them there.

Well, yeah. And then the network would have taken them out. So he... *brain explodes*

[obWARNING] Let me say first that I do not suggest that everyone run off and read a hundred or so of these things so you can argue one way or the other. I pretty much had to as the moderator of the forum in which I first experienced this topic, some 10 years ago now. As moderator, I felt obliged to make as fair an evaluation as I could. Well, it took me months to wipe those things out of my head. So DO NOT GO THERE if you don't need or want to. It's not worth it. [/obWARNING]

After a sample set of approximately 100 slash stories, I can make the generalized statement that the pieces usually come in two major forms:

1. violent rape stories, and
2. flowery nonsense stuff that has the characters falling
about one another in hysteria about their repressed desire
for one another.

Mind you, the former is by far the most common. The latter is just so far out of character with most strong lead characters, it's simply silly.

Po' thang had to read 100 slash stories. Had to! 100 of them! Bwahaha!

I can understand the squick factor with a rape story, but let's be honest. How many bodice rippers use the 'woman thrown together with hunk man she hates, who takes her against her will until the day dawns when she awakes to ruffle her fingers through his manly chest hair and realize that he isn't mistreating her, he's wooing her, and she truly loves him forever and ever!' premise?

I don't really care for the flowery nonsense stuff either, but that's not so much a feature specific to slash as it is a hallmark of bad writing. If you don't like slash, no big. If you don't like rape fic, no big. But it's hilarious to see the, "I'm not a homophobe but I think these stories are WRONG!" juxtaposed with "And I read 100 of these icky things to figure that out!"

I'm so horribly amused whenever I find anti-slash people in a series that just begs to insert the gay into. I mean, there are some serieses where I can understand people thinking that slash is anti-canon, but then, there are some where it's more of a PUH-LEEZE, because the innuendo just plain hurts. Now, I'm not familiar with what you're talking about here, but it looks like the sort that I mean of the latter.

And I love those people who think that all slash-writers are straight females. I've met several who weren't that had even MORE fun torturing the characters! In fact, I've met a good deal of yaoi RPers who are male and don't allow females into their shonen-ai flangst. It's such an amusing misconception that people have.

Everyone I have spoken with who knew Michael Garrison says that HE WOULD HAVE HAD NO QUALMS ABOUT WRITING ANY POSSIBLE ASPECT OF THIS TRAIT INTO THE SERIES IF IT WAS MEANT TO BE THERE.

Homosexuality is a trait! It has aspects! She knows people who have spoken to Michael Garrison and she speaks in CAPS FROM ON HIGH!

How stupid can some people be!

I'm not a slash fan, but even I know Michael Garrison positively flamed in Hollywood. The rumour mill from the TW3 book was that he had wanted Liberace in all his theatrics to be on the show, but black rock ended that one before it got off the drawing board. (Liberace had to wait for the camp of Batman and Laugh-In to strut his stuff.)

Totally off topic, but do you know of, have you read, seen or heard of a Wild Wild West/Star Trek crossover? I've been searching for it for years, and folks have told me it exists, but no one seems to remember where they first read it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
