there are lesbians in Xena?
My first fandom doesn't generate much wank these days, but back in the day, big time.

In the Xenites Community, astraios wonders what the Season 5 DVD commentary will be like, because quite frankly that season was crap.

Ironically many people didn't like that season because the Xena and Gabrielle maintext subtext was toned down considerably. But not according to joffy

i stopped watching the show when there was a real lesbian thing going on. i think that was that season too

Oooh boy, even I know that's like putting the fox in with the chickens.

Early days and it may go nowhere but so far:

you are sos stupid to just assume i am a lesbian hater. i have really good friends who are lesbian and i have no problem with it at all--maybe even had lesbian thoughts myself at one time!

I loved them even when I thought they were straight. I just related to them more after it was obvious they were an item.

It's all a matter of perspective...I guess.

Was season 5 the one where they all suddenly turned into monotheists/proto-Christians? Otherwise known as The Season That Sucked So Hard I Feared Explosive Decompression From Turning On The T.V.?

'cause, yeah, turning down the subtext would just go along with that suck.

Yep, that's the one. Also the season where Ares/Xena get notched up for no apparent reason other then Kevin Smith played a sexy Ares, Gabrielle gets a male admirer and Xena has a baby. A lot of people bailed out of the fandom after that.

I really would like to know what the obvious lesbian scene is in that season, because there was a sudden drought on subtext that season, things were far more obvious in Season 3 & 4 and they certainly made up for it in Season 6.

Like the episode where Xena took time out from doing something or other on the spirit plane so that she could examine Gabrielle's tonsils with Dr. Tongue?

Not gay. At all.

Did anyone else find it midly ironic that a show famous for it's lesbian subtext had the two leads suddenly turn into Born-Again Christians?

Or is it just me.

Seriously, it was bizarre. I was a fan of the show til it jumped the shark, but I never followed the fandom-- did the producer suddenly find religion, or was that how the story was supposed to go all along?

No, no, those weren't "a real lesbian thing going on" until Season 5, all those kisses, that's just them being good friends.

I kiss my friends like that all the time, doncha know.

Then there are all the bathtimes ;)

Bwah! It amuses me that people still ship Gabrielle/Joxer. In the same way that Lance Bass/female Mary Sues amuses me. I'm all "Have you NO Gaydar?"

The title of this wank made me laugh and laugh.

That is one thing I did like about Season 5, they finally ended the Joxer's crush in a gentle way. Gabrielle tells him that she loves him, but not like that, pretty much those exact words.

He was an annoying character, but he had some sweet moments. I still can't work out where the Joxer/Ares comes from, apart from the these two hot guys are really hot together, they barely had the same scenes.

There seems to be an assumption that if one character likes another character then that character *must* like them back.

Even if they're gay/romantically involved with another character/dead/hates them, etc.

Oh HELL yeah. Geez, the entire fandom IMPLODED. In one foul swoop the producers managed to ostracise the majority of the fanbase, killed most online websites and all but ended the mass of fanfiction.

I got the impression that he really wanted to end the franchise, and that he did. If f_w was around back in the day it would have made Harry Potter would positively subdued.

I remember being in jr. high, not quite having a concept of lesbianism (or of any sexuality, for that matter), and thinking there was something up with those two. I also remember these thoughts leading me to being hella confused when Bruce Campbell showed up, and body-switched makeout scenes started happening.

Yeah. Because you can't possibly be homophobic if you're had "lesbian thoughts." It's not like repressed homophobia can lead to the most vicious hatred or anything.
