I'm not sure if other places have mentioned this yet, but on the LJ comm <http://www.livejournal.com/users/squaresoft_icon">Squaresoft_icon</a>, Kasuino posts some Final Fantasy X-2 bashing, on the basis that it was nothing but a Charlie's Angel's knock-off and an excuse for Squaenix to make more money on Yuna & Rikku's boobs. Many people get very upset at someone knocking the only true Final Fantasy sequel, and because the community is about icons (though Kasuino's post is about making X-2 bashing icons) and some people actually liked the game. More people just seem vaguely amused and use it as an opportunity to wank.
Ensuing discussion about fanservice, Final Fantasy, icons, lots of ranting/bashing of various icon cliches, and plenty of mocking in various forms.

There are, hidden in there, some gems of sense, and I found Mahoutsukichan's & Hitokuse's mockery of the mocking amusing, but all-in-all it seems to be a lot of "OMG, how could you not like the game" and "It was a marketing ploy to make Yuna & Rikku into sluts & make more guys buy videogames (wtf?)"

I know I'm a heathen because I don't think FF-3/6 is 'Teh GREATEST GAME OMG'!

And the whole 'it demeans women' thing makes me want to KILL things.

Look, guys, I appreciate the thought but I can assure you that as a real woman I don't NEED you to protect me from the Evalllll Boobies and Ass, okay?

What else do you call the whole Aeris-Aerith debate? I mean, 7 years after a game comes out, who ELSE would still be arguing over which OFFICIAL translation of a character's name is more correct?


The only things more on crack than Squaenix itself is it's fans. Honestly.

Actually, I just didn't like the game. The boobs thing is incidental. I have boobs. I like boobs. Boobs are boobs.

It was the fact that it's KEWLIEZ popular that pisses me off.

I really, really hate it when someone takes a good idea and ruins it. And I don't mean X-2.

Look, folks, when you say "My fandom is ..." it's THE CHARACTER TALKING ABOUT THEIR FANS (or a fan talking about all the other fans). Ok? So if you want to make the point that Paine is a painted harlot designed to make the awe-inspiring gradeur of FF marketable to the masses, you want to say something like "My fandom is a bunch of drooling fanboys." Not "My fandom has huge tits." Unless you're talking about man-tits, in which case, you should probably specify.

The moment I started my brand new FFX-2 game, my husband was groaning on the sofa, bemoaning how it was all so obviously targeted at girls. GIRLS!

Naturally. Don't you know that all women are kept hidden in caves so they don't interact with the outside world till they come of age?

So naturally a game with cute, smart, girls running around in sexy outfits would be frighting and insulting to our virgin eyes.

Lol, what I found great here was really the "rightous anger" of the people in that comm. I love them, but... really. Silly silly folks.

I totally get what you mean about the people taking shit too seriously - FF fans do that a lot, I've noted. No more so than most fandoms, but still, it leads to some interesting things.
