Perhaps I Am Surrounded By Fierce Weasels ([info]alpheratz) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

Tiny Harry Potter wank
*obligatory first wank disclaimer here, wankdar isn't tuned yet, be gentle, etc.*

The Leaky Cauldron, a Harry Potter news site, posts a story:

When Joanna Chammings of South Wales told her daughter, Niamh, that she was pregnant, her daughter said "wouldn't it be lovely if we had triplets?"

Mrs. Chammings shortly thereafter found out that was exactly what she was having. So she told her seven-year old that she could name one of the triplets. Niamh is a Harry Potter fan.

The family just brought home Nathaniel, Madeline, and Hermione.

Cue wank in the comments. It's a small one, but features name wankery, baby pictures, and a sarcastic anonymouse, who would be more impressive if anyone could figure out what it was talking about.

I have to admit I can't see the wank yet. But it's the Leaky Cauldron, so I will just check again later.

Incidentally I had a talk about that with my sister, a few days ago. I really don't think it is a good idea to let children choose the name for their siblings. Even if you are lucky and they pick a nice, acceptable name.

Well, for me it was "Niamh, ew," followed by "it's pronounced Neeve" from five people. Sabrina's comments were funny too.

Incidentally I had a talk about that with my sister, a few days ago. I really don't think it is a good idea to let children choose the name for their siblings. Even if you are lucky and they pick a nice, acceptable name.

Well, I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to ask children for their input, but *promising* to name the child whatever they want is slightly... well, silly.

And also the debate over weather the story is interesting and even worthy of being at TLC. :D Which made me giggle.

We were completely stumped for a name for our third child. Nameless baby comes home from the hospital, and we take her up to our son's nursery school, where everyone comes out and says 'Ah, this must be Lucy?'

Yup, our four year-old named the baby, but hadn't told us.

Let's just say that I know a kid who is going to have serious things to say to it's parents in a couple years. The father got to name it. He chose Stuart Aragon.

Or Stu-agorn as the rest of us have taken to calling the poor thing.

One of my friends was asked, when he was five, what he wanted to name his little brother. He responded, quite certain, with "Mellory Pennery Figby Fennery" for a first name.

His parents decided to go with "David".

I was going to make a comment here as well about how, well, there are worse names for a girl in the series.

But really, Hermione has to be the most recognisibly 'HARRY FRIKKIN POTTER, MAN!' name for a girl in it. ^^;;

Man, they really dodged a bullet on that one. I mean, "Hermione" is a nice name, it's even in Shakespeare, and everyone knows how to say it thanks to the movies. They totally could have ended up with baby Pansy, or Bellatrix, or McGonagall or something.

Oh, now I remember :
the "first" Hermione comes from Virgile's Enéide :
"Servitio enixoe tulimus, qui deinde secutus
Ledoeam HERMIONEM, Lacedoemoniosque hymenoeos..."
Enée said in the third book of the Enéide.
The jealousy and fits of anger of Hermione in Euripide's Andromaque are famous.
Yes, she was actually the "first" (4th century before JC)

1. Actually, Hermione predates Virgil; she's in Homer. Bite me.
2. Okay, I assume you're French, but honestly, if you can write ENGLISH you should be able to write the English names of mythological characters, since they're almost ALL spelled like they are in Latin (or Romanized Greek)! That is, Aeneas, not Enée, Andromacha/e, not Andromaque, etc.

*takes deep breaths*

This inspires me to name my future child Draco. *vbeg*

Actaully, my fiance and I discussed childrens' names once and our boy names were
Oscar (after Oscar Wilde)
Brian (after Brian Molko) and
Stefan (after Stefan Olsdal).

So no matter what the poor kid would be named after a gay man.

Actually, don't see any problem with naming the kid Hermione, other than the obvious connection to HP. That can be the difficulty... you get exposed to names through fictional stuff, think "Well, that's nice!", and you kind of start thinking it'd be a nice name for a kid.
If I ever had a daughter, I'd like to name her Felicia. Of course, I'd have to wonder, will Darkstalkers/Capcom vs. ---- still be popular enough that she might be teased for being named after a catgirl...? (And is it entirely too freaky to give your kid the same name as a character you have copious amounts of porn of? c.c)

I had a friend in high school whose niece was named "Aviendha."

Poor baby--not only is it hard to spell, she's named after an annoying character in an even more annoying series.

Some people just shouldn't breed.

/wants to name her children Icarus and Cassandra. Who are these men in white, and why are they dragging me to a gyno's office?

I think it's a really cute story, but then, I was allowed to name my younger sister after a cartoon dog :-? And everyone assumes it's from Romeo and Juliet :))

My father once knew a woman named Tanga Lemon. Her parents were really into cirtus, I suppose.

It could always be worse. Niamh could've been a Tolkien fan.

Hello Frodo Chammings.

Hey now! My friends Meri and Lorien don't think Tolkienish names are so bad.

Mwahaha, one of my mother's ex-coworkers named her son Angelus. Yes, after Angel, not the bell thing.

I actually like the name Hermione for a girl, if only because every other fricken girl's name has been tainted by some skank I've met over the years with the same name. Same goes for many male names as well, actually.

A woman who named her first child Niamh is probably better off letting someone else choose her baby names.

On the fannish names front, there is someone in my temple (a very wanky someone) who legally changed her name to Amidala because she thinks she IS Amidala. OTOH, I changed *my* name to Delenn, and I could take or leave the B5 character, I just like the name. A close friend has a son named Anakin, who hopefully will not be "Annie" once he starts school. ;)

My parents have a friend called Yvonne, which is a perfectly fine name except for the fact that her parents had never heard it pronounced. To this day everybody calls her "Wivonny".

My sister went to school with a kid named Anderson Jupiter Anderson.

I was so surprised when she hadn't made that up.

Precious Snow White. The roommate of my brother's friend at the Naval Academy.

Where she's going for university just seals the beauty of it.
