LJ is the wankiest fandom around
Poor LiveJournal. They try to do a good thing by posting a link to an org that aims to prevent teen pregnancy. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to check out the politics of the organization. And naturally, any sensitive issue results in wankiness. Lots of wankiness. Not two hours later, the founder of LJ issues an apology. Stay tuned!

Oh dear god no. Not a site that tries to tell people that being a teen mother isn't the best idea in the world?

Gasp the horror. Oh the horror. Hear I thought teen mothers had it easy. *rolls eyes*

Being a teen mom isn't anything to brag about.
I think most teen mother's would agree no matter how much the love their kids that it's a very tough road.

Word.

I'm not seeing the issue here, but God forbid someone tells teen mothers that they're not heroes, and that they may have made a very bad decision that will alter their life permanently.

Nope it's better for young girls to believe that having a kid at 16 will solve their problems, and make people love them.

Is it just me, or is it not particularly slanted to say that having sex leads to babies, and having no sex doesn't? And that having a baby makes your life really difficult?

Yes, there are ways of preventing it, but if you don't use a condom correctly (and most teenagers don't), then the effectiveness drops. I also know a 7 year old who was conceived while her mom was on the pill.

So, I like sites that help delay kids having sex a bit. At least then they can read and possibly even follow the instructions on a package of condoms when they do go at it.

Teenagers don't become pregnant because they wish so, they become pregnant because our society tells them the only role of woman is as mother.

::IZ DED::

So where, exactly, are all these teen girls who are so desperate to fit into the fifties?

I mean, no denying that teen pregnancy is a problem and society is probably at fault in some way, but somehow I doubt that these chicks are going and getting knocked up on purpose so they can be accepted by society.

Speaking of LiveJournal, it seems that a troll has invaded an LJ community for the MMORPG Ragnarok Online (http://www.livejournal.com/community/ragnarokonline/1828768.html). It begins with a KKK icon and accompanying racist comments, a statement that the Dancer class are a bunch of slutty little women, and some random mentions of emus, emos and furries. And then the fun begins.
If any non-anonymice wish to report it, that is.

Uh. Yeah. Having an older sister (and no, she didn't finish school either - and she was pretty damn heavily supported into finishing) who had three kids by the time she was 20 and having all of them taken off of her for being an unfit mother, I'm for encouraging teenagers to take precautions.

What I don't get are the comments. "OMG, we should be raising these girls as heroes!" How is it heroic to get pregnant, drop out of school and be dependant on welfare?Because, statistically speaking, that is what most of them do. Obviously, I'm using a different dictionary to everyone else.

And now I shall stop my wank. Mainly because my hand hurts.

"Teaching teens about contraception does not make them have sex. Research is clear on this point: sex education does not increase sexual activity. In fact, in some cases, teaching teens about contraception seems to delay their sexual activity."

Statements like this, taken from their website, don't really demonstrate to me what a wacky, right-wing organising this is, trying to push abstinence down the throats of those reading the website. And yes, it is very true: abstinence IS the only way to ensure that you never get pregnant, and it should be considered as an option. I'm 21 and I'm abstinent. It's got nothing to do with morals, and everything to do with the fact that I really cannot afford to get pregnant, as I'm not ready to be a mother, I don't want to carry a child to term and give it up for adoption, and I don't want to have an abortion; and my boyfriend (who I've been with for over two years now) feels the same way. The problem is that abstinence isn't right for the majority of people, and you need both parties in a relationship to be committed to it for it to work. Thus, you need to educate everyone about the different methods of contraception, ESPECIALLY (considering STDs) barrier methods.

Really, I can't see any problem with any campaign to lower the rates of teen pregnancy, explode myths about it, and give good information about contraception, and links to other websites with good information about contraception, and say that abstinence is an option. I was actually laughed at by a teacher at my school when she asked if any of us planned to abstain from sex - I was 15 at the time, and was the only one out of a class of 32 who wasn't too embarrassed to answer in the affirmative. She said I was stupid and was missing out on a lot of fun, which is possibly the most unhelpful anyone can say to someone who's made that decision. So yes, I think that it's good for organisations to say 'hey, if you want to abstain, then more power to you; if you don't, get yourself some contraception, now', rather than 'hahahaha abstinence is only for bible bashers and losers - contraception is the ONLY way to go'. My choice of abstinence was questioned enough by my friends - I was the only non-radically-religious one who'd decided that it was the right choice for me; and most of the people I knew were having regular sex from about the age of fourteen (or, at least, claiming that they were because they thought it made them look cool). Maybe there are some places where having sex from a young age is frowned upon by your peers, and where people will say they're abstaining because their friends would shun them if they didn't; but I didn't live in that place, and I'm sure that lots of other people don't live in that place, and in my experience, it would have been nice for people I knew to be more supportive of my choice.

Teen pregnancy is a very big issue. In the UK, where we have the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe, there is a government initiative where 14 year olds are having implants to prevent them conceiving for at least three years, because it's a fact that young teens are much less likely to remember to take their pill every day than older women, and more likely to do something that negates its effectiveness (like getting drunk and vomitting it up). The worry reported over here (it was on the news yesterday, in fact) is that girls will not bother to use a condom, because they know they won't get pregnant. The rise in STDs in young people over here is frightening - my boyfriend's older sister is a doctor, and we were discussing it last summer. It's not just HIV and chlamydia, it's syphillis (which makes me think of the 17th century - I had no idea it was on the rise so much today) and gonorrhea and genital herpes - all of which are preventable if you always use protection.

If an ad campaign, or an awareness day, makes even one person act responsibly, then it's worth having, no matter how many people it offends. I don't like some of the site's affiliations, but I do like its message to act responsibly, whether it's by abstaining from sex, or by using contraception. I think that some people need to remember that just because Bush says something's right, it doesn't automatically make it wrong...

The site and LJ admin should be happy the link is fulfilling their aims. Because other than abstinence, the only way to have sex with no chance of pregnancy is masturbation.

Congratulations Livejournal! You just had thousands of people splooge over their screens with nary a baby in sight!

Hmm....

Hmm. You know, I've always felt that one of the reasons teenage girls tend to get knocked-up is sheer boredom. That they can have all the information they want, but if they don't realize there's something beyond having a boyfriend and running a household, it really won't matter.

I'm 20 years old and I'm not really that interested in getting a man or getting laid. I have so many I want to do, I feel that any relationship would just get in my way. Maybe when I'm older and I finish college, I'll go out there and start a family, but that's only when I'm done with my studies. No particular religious or moral reasons, I just want to know what's out there before I settle down.

They say today's society is over-sexed, and maybe there's some truth to it. They focus too much on sex and forget the 'higher aspirations' (whatever that means). You know, that there's life beyond sex. Now, I'm not saying you should go all monk on us, but people should be aware there's something else. Balance, I say.

I'm reminded of my old friends in high school constantly mooning over guys... romance is ok, but they were 15 years old. What kind of love can a teenage kid feel, a teenage kid that just 5 years ago was playing with Barbies? There are some success stories, people who marry their high school sweethearts, but what are the chances of that happening to you? Never mind the age old questions of where to life and how would they pay the bills.

Education is important, but not only in sex-ed... Education should be about somebody saying 'hey, you can be an astronaut if you want to, you don't have to get married right away' (corny, I know). Then again, girls like my best friend only wanted one thing in life, and that was someone to love, and didn't seem too interested in studying.

Am I making ANY sense at all? It just makes me kind of sad, to see friends my age with two kids and a mortgage. What's the hurry, I say? The avarage mortality is 80 years these days... that's plenty of time to have sex.

I'm going to tack against the tide and say that I don't think it's such a hot idea to suggest to women that abstinence alone is a hundred percent effective form of birth control. Used correctly and consistently every time, it is of course the most effective form of birth control by a percentage point or two. But let's face it, in this sad world even kickboxing nuns sometimes end up having unwanted and unplanned sexual encounters with aggressive individuals possessed of viable sperm, let alone relatively inexperienced and insecure teenage girls who half want to find out what all the fuss is about anyway.

Ifgodforbid I had a daughter, I'd strongly recommend to her that she start using a hormonal method of birth control as soon as she was fertile, while encouraging her to abstain from sex as long as she felt was right for her. Maybe it seems contradictory, but then at least if something untoward did happen, she'd only have one trauma to deal with and not two.
