AMV Wankage!
Ah, The Org. Most of the time a fun community, but prone to cases of violent stupidity.

Such as this one. CArnesen formally requests that member NME be banned because "OMGIDIDSUCHAGOODJOBANDHEINSULTEDMEEEEE!!!111one!"

As a regular lurker at The Org, I'll contend that NME is a loudmouthed jerk. But so are a lot of people there. If people are allowed to be banned for simply being jerks, then half the community needs to get booted out the door.

Of course, the sane people have to stop the wank short by bringing in the many voices of reason. *sniffle* C'mon, Org! I want my mockery!

Dear god, I already like NME a lot more than that asshole. "Yes. Let's ban because my professionalism blows and not in the good way."

The "AMV industry"? What the...wait a minute. I was under the impression that something needed to generate revenue to be an industry...which would be blatantly illegal in the case of AMV's. I understand that good editing can have it's place, but how can ripping footage from something created by others and setting it to music created by others be considered an art form?

It boggles the mind...

It's an art form in that the person editing the footage and music is expressing themselves through the act of editing. The same way that photography (creating a new image by manipulating something that already exists) is an art form. Whatever the artist uses to express themselves is...well...art (this comes from an art major, BTW).

But no, AMVs are not an industry. If they were, I'd be in copyright infringement up to my eyeballs.

My friends let me watch the first two episodes of Eva at 3 in the morning. It was all kinds of bizarre.

One of the guys in my anime club decided to try having a 24-hour anime marathon, which included starting Eva at about 5 in the morning (after not sleeping all night) and watching the series straight through, plus movies. A few hours later he also apparently watched all of Lain, again without sleep. How his brain did not explode is beyond me.

Oh, no no, like I said before, I can understand editing as an art form. I've seen some beautifully done editing in AMV's. I just don't necessarily see the entire AMV itself as an art form...perhaps it's just my personal opinion.

And yeah, I'm an art major - an animation major, specifically. It's why I have trouble seeing someone using another person's animation as all that kosher...it just seems kinda gittish, to me. If someone wants to express themselves, why don't they actually CREATE something, instead of just reorganizing (which is what editing is) the work of their predecessors? I don't see it as an art form, I see it as an homage to the art form that these people love - no more, and no less. People get way too serious about AMV's, and c'mon, it's just severely edited anime. It's what you like about it boiled down into a minute and a half of edited footage. Whether it be beautifully edited or not, it still doesn't make it art...

But that breaks into a whole philosophy of art thing I'm not willing to get into now...

Dude, you have no idea. People have called AMVing their reason to live. There is no end to how INTENSELY SERIOUSLY they take this shit.

As for "why don't they animate something themselves" - some of us can't. I can barely draw; my proportions suck. Besides, I make AMVs as a fannish hobby, akin to writing fanfiction or making shrine pages or any of the other dorky things we do for love of [whatever]. If I did magically gain the power to make visual art I would be doing something entirely different from this, not based in fannish enthusiasm. It's not all part of the same "creative drive" just because it's visually based.

In other words, I don't make my own art because I don't make art in the first place. I just have fun rearranging visuals along with music. Deathly serious folks aside, the majority of AMV editors think along these lines, I believe.

I don't mean to slag you; this is a very common comment about fanvidding, and any fannish hobby, really ("why don't you write original fiction / draw your own characters / blah blah").

Aha, yes, yes. I didn't think of FW when I saw CArnesen's crying fit ..."post" - good call.

NME puts my teeth on edge 99% of the time, and I still think that review of his was harsh but fair. If I, Supreme Bitch of the Org, have to agree with you, you've definitely got a point going. Yeah, it was harsh, but good god, that was a pretty involved list of what went wrong. CA should be lucky people are saying this much, instead of just "OMGWTF UR CON SUX0RZ!!!!1". But seriously? Banning people because they said something you don't like? Bitch, please.

*reads new part of thread*

Yay for the sane mods. And I don't even get along with them normally, so I'm not cheerleading. Yay.
