Van Helsing Wankage. Mmm darkness and doom.
Fresh meat! My first wank.

Whenever I feel the need for a good wank, I just head on over to an IMDb message board and click a random link. There's bound to be something in there somewhere.
Today, I was not disappointed.

Van Helsing has been out for a few days now, more then enough time for some decent wankage.
wet_dog starts off my favorite wank thus far by pointing out the improbability of one of the action sequences in this movie. Despite the fact that he's arguing the logic of something in a movie with semi-automatic crossbows, he actually pleads a pretty good case. I can almost see the diagrams he drew to reference from.

The first couple posts after that stay pretty much on topic. Then, out of left field, britbuffguy decides to point out that nothing is as stupid as that one scene in RotK. You know, that one totally improbable scene?
Since we've totally wandered off topic, katran1 decides to point out that britbuffguy has no concept of historical reality whatsoever. Others agree.

Some idiot decides to take it back on topic again.
Somebody decides to cause a bit of brain hemorrhaging by bringing up time travel. I'm still confused.

wet_dog steps back in to point out his original point. And then point out some other stuff too. And mention LotR. Because every movie should be connected to LotR. Constantly. And compared to. Especially if they point out why LotR sucked more.
I'm sorry, what message board was I on again?

Some asshat decides that if we're invoking the Holy Trilogy, why the heck not bring the Bible into it too. He even includes the little numbers so you can look up the references. How cute. I tuned it out by the second sentence, but I'm sure there was something wanky in there somewhere.

orie0943 remembers that there was a topic originally, and decides to debate it with some good points of his own. wet_dog disagrees.

krazyfrank finally decides that this debate is stupid (god it took long enough didn't it?) and points out that A: it's just a movie, and B: it's a movie with werewolves and vampires. Apparently we shouldn't be too concerned with realism. And it sucked anyway.

More back and forth debate ensues about whether or not one should expect logic from a flick with Frankenstein in it. objectivist decides to nip the polite babble in the butt and just call everybody a "moron".

People start getting kinda pissy. But not really over the "moron" thing. Really, they're just irate because basic laws of physics are still being blatantly ignored. To shame.

Tower 1, Tower 2, Tower A, and Tower B are analyzed a few more times. Then analyzed again. The people that hated the film admit to seeing it again just to figure out wtf is going on. I'm pretty sure I heard a few brains implode at one point.

freedomsknight takes it upon himself to point out that everybody who cares one lick about this movie, or the probabilities contained within, is pretty dumb. Which is really funny when one takes into account just how many times he posted in this thread before reaching this conclusion.
A few of the more beautiful examples from his post:
1) And one day, you will learn that a piece of crap with a buncha pretty pictures ISNT a movie.
B) but dont *beep* with us because we dont see the entertainment in a 2 hour flash demo with no plot, lines or story (I'm not entirely certain who "us" is. Maybe his alternate personality was fed up with the discussion too)
3) THE HORSE IS FUKIN DEAD! EVEN I REALIZED THAT!
Tears came to my eyes at the beauty of that last one.

Those cables really do defy logic. Dracula's fortress must have a bunch of demonic pixies fluttering about holding the other ends of them or something.

*nod* The bit I got the least was why he put all those cables up in the first place. I mean, the physics of them was improbable, but not as improbable as their existance.

But there *was* a bunch of demonic pixies flying around... And I'm sure the cables were just strung up for them to roost on. Like decorating a nursery.

*Ducks and runs* :-D

(My brain shut down in the first scene, when it was made abundantly clear that the relevant books are completely alien to this particular movie. I decided that it was obviously happening in the Herculese/Xena universe, where history and physics (and, hell, plot) only matter if they're convenient, and I had a great time. Pure entertainment, no redeeming qualities whatsoever.)

Lovely to know that the idiots are inescapble. Yea, verily, do I promote thee, IMBd, to the great honour of 'The Pit of Movie Wank', not unlike thy scarred and Sued companion, the Pit of Voles. Yea, verily, do I conferr this title upon thee.

Ahhh, Van Helsing wank. It warms my heart to watch a fandom spring into being.

Personally, I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen, and I loved every minute of it. (Includes *tons* of plot inconsistencies, for what it's worth. Some contributions in the comments, too.)

Tell me about it! It was so campy but it was worth my money. And I don't think it was written to be taken seriously anyway.

I love how it kept on snowing then rain then thunder. And the whole full moon thing was inconsistant as well. But who cares? It's a movie and the purpose of a movie is to have fun and be entertained. It did its purpose.

The vampire brides hurl Anna around the village square like a basketball. A basketball that looks really good in a corset.

Haven't seen the movie, but that part made me choke on my own spit ;)

It's a summer movie. It's supposed to be only action and no brains. These people just went to see the movie so they could have something to complain about.

Semi-automatic crossbow? O_o Even with movie-logic, I have no idea how that'd work. Sound like I'll have to go see this movie.

I am led to understand (by roleplaying sourcebooks, but bear with me) that the Chinese actually developed a semi-automatic/repeating crossbow at one point. Allegedly it didn't actually work very well, but such are the risks of cinematic-ness.

Heh. I love it when people confuse "fantasy" with "anything goes" and then roll their eyes at everyone who doesn't share their misconception.

"Van Helsing" attempted to be a humorous fantasy movie but helplessly resorted to the "anything goes" take in random scenes.
I buy any consistency breaks where they serve
a) the fantasy or
b) the humor
Where they serve only to save the script-writers braincells on expense of mine, not so.

Though, once all my braincells were burnt I had some dizzy fun with this movie.

Yup, see, I *loved* The Mummy. I thought it was everything that big, dumb summer movie fun should be. Brendan was charming, Rachel was adorable, Oded was teh sexay, and John Hannah was also teh sexay (but I'm weird that way). And OMG Arnold Vosloo *wipes drool*. So I was all set to suspend my disbelief and turn off my brain and watch VH.

Damn Somers for not letting me.

My EIGHT year old was boggling at the plot holes. "Mom, why is it suddenly two days from the full moon, when it was the full moon like, yesterday?" "Mom, didn't they already kill that bride?" See, the thing is...when you're crafting a high concept fantasy, suspension of disbelief is your friend. American mainstream movie audiences (literary aesthetes that they are) are ALL too willing to hand over their suspension of disbelief in favour of being taken on a fun, wild ride. When a filmmaker manages to throw even a casual moviegoer OUT of suspended disbelief over and over and over, he's just screwing himself. Hard. It wouldn't have cost a mint to just, oh, go over the script with a consistency editor. And then it would have been big, dumb, consistent fun.

If they had found it a week beforehand there would not have been such a rush and they could have simply kicked his ass, knocked him out and poked him at thier leisure.

Mmm...poked Jackman at their leisure... XD

The post on the Bible was on the Archangel Gabriel, where the stories about him come from, and the possibility that he may or maynot be the same Gabriel as Van Helsing. Not bad, actually.
