Cosplayers have to be... SKINNY?!
Seris has opted to post a lovely display of pictures and reasons why those who are slightly "round" should not do cosplay at anime conventions.

It's just starting. Give it a few minutes.

Call me a bitch, but I can't totally disagree with the OP. IMHO cosplay is also a matter of figuring out what costume WORKS on you...not just whatever character you think is kewlest this week. Ew. Just...ew.

I always thought cosplay was about dressing up and not caring what everyone else thinks. Because, you know, EVERYONE IS A DORK AND ALREADY KNOWS IT AND IS HAVING FUN AND DOESN'T CARE ABOUT MY FLAB RIGHT NOW, SO SHOVE IT AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE MANGA TABLE, I SEE SOMETHING I WANT.

Thing is, he has a valid point. He just went about it in the most flame-baiting manner possible. Some people are simply pyromaniacs (pyromaniwanks?).

I hang with a large group of costumers, and one of the cardinal rules for doing it right is costuming to body type. Being of the portly build, I'd probably look good in an Edwardian ensemble. But you sure wouldn't want to see me as the Spandex LeatherLord.

Now there are some, such as the notorious "Sailor Bubba", who deliberately go against type to get a laugh/reaction. But a lot of these cosplayers are really trying their best to look like their favorite characters. And I do understand that, I really do. But frankly, I can do without 250+ people dressing like the Sailor Scouts. Spandex in particular just is not that forgiving (I know from experience).

Dress to body type. It's not just a good idea.

Funny how all the "good" cosplay pictures are pretty, slender people...

"I'm not making fun of them because they're fat! But LOOK HOW FAT AND UGLY THEY ARE! OMGWTF THERE ARE GUYS COSPLAYING WOMEN! THEY'RE SO UGLY! THEY'RE SO FAT! But I'm not making fun of their weight because I said I wasn't!"

Memo to the dumbfuck: adding a disclaimer to an insult doesn't make it not an insult.

The twit reminds me of one of my lil sis's high school friends who complained bitterly about cosplaying chicks with "costumes writing checks their bodies couldn't cash." Because women only cosplay so that some oversexed, pimply teenage kid will think they're hot. That's surely why I go to cons--for the dating scene!

Sadly, he has edited the post to take out the "FATTIES!" references. :-(

However, I would like to point out that skinny dorks who live in glass houses in which they DRESS UP LIKE CARTOON CHARACTERS shouldn't thrown stones at fat dorks who do the same thing.

Because no matter how pretty or thin you are, cosplaying doesn't exactly rank high on the "Cool Things That Hot People Do" list.

It just killed me that he randomly picked Albert (who runs cosplay.com) as one of his bad examples. Not that I'm going to comment on what I personally think of his costumes, mind you. I'm trying to keep it in my pants here.

Was it my imagination, or were most of his/her examples taken from the San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival Parade cosplay contest? I'm going mostly off of the buildings in the background, and from recognition of some of the costumes I saw posted in the pictures outside of Japan Video up in SF Japantown a couple of weeks ago. (I opted out of going since it was 90+ degrees that weekend - no way in hell was I about to be traipsing around San Francisco in five layers of costume with no shade in sight.)

Is it just me, or are a good number of his 'Bad Cosplayers', well...GOOD?

The Sailor Moon one is pretty spiffy, what with the wings and all, I REALLY like the one he sums up as 'I have no idea what the hell she's supposed to be, but she shold go home.' The Trowa's good...hell, pretty much none of them are eye-sporking, and a few of them are really good.

BOLD ITALICS OF ANNOYANCE!
[info]phosfate
2004-05-12 11:56 pm UTC (link)
I've been to a lot of cons where people wear costumes that are not entirely suited to their body types. And yes, it can be alarming and even annoying.

But you know what's much, much worse? The self-righteous assholes who think it's their public duty to bitch about 'em. Yes, I can see Lady Oscar's uncharacteristic man-boobies. Yes, I can see that woman is a bit on the spherical side for an on-model Supergirl. So fucking what? I'm not going to remember them in a week, but I'm sure as hell going to remember what a snide little fucker you're being.

The cosplayers are, one hopes, doing it to enjoy themselves. Everyone else should lighten up and do the same.

best thing in comments for me:

this is why fat people don't even bother trying to enjoy life, cause people like this go and say stupid remarks.

errr, what now?

See, this is why I do Star Wars costuming.
My fantasy days as Jess Harveld (my icon, yes, me) were long ago.

Now i dress as an Askajian (6 boobs cover a multitude of sins) since they're supposed to be fat.

Is it sad that I'm waiting for all the pictures to load just to check I'm not there?

And at the risk of wanking myself (Oh, who am I kidding? I'm unbuttoning my jeans as I type!), I have to say that the OP is a complete bitch. No one looks like an anime character. No one. So let people cosplay as they will, and judge on the skill of the costume rather than their size/skin colour/glasses/sex.

Besides, guys who cosplay girls are cool.</i>

*has dejavu to another rant about this*

I'm a "fattie". I cosplay. And I don't give a fuck if you like it or not. It's for fun, fuckwit. Get over it. Don't like it? Don't look at the cosplayers.

Wee. If I wanked, please forgive me. :D

Over the last thirty or so years, SF costuming has evolved quite a bit. A number of rule-of-thumb examples have been gathered together and presented as "Rostler's Rules of Costuming". I present them to you now for your consideration, take it or leave it as you will, but keep in mind that they cover stage costuming, not necessarily hall costuming.
