Politics and fandom = wank!
As soon as Fan_the_vote started getting pimped on my friendslist I knew it was only a matter of time before there would be some wank about it and I wasn't wrong!.

Not only is it stealing from the show creators to write fanfic for campaign contributions, but it's wrong because some of those show creators might be Republicans and here you are giving the money you stole from them to the Democrats.

Hopefully we'll get some stunningly wanky rebuttals to match it. *g*

EDIT: HOLD THE PHONE! This is way wankier! Oh dear Lord, thank you Ian McDuff for being completely batshit.

We can pay for votes in this country now? Damn, I wish I knew that during the last presidential election! Does the electoral college take PayPal?

Hard to say where I stand on this. While it is making money off a franchise not yours, it's not precisely selling a book - it's more of a barter 'Maybe if you...i'll...' thing.

But my god, the intelligent, polite debate. I'm...i'm not used to this. Where are my trolls? Where are my overly excited BNFs? Where are the the amazing amounts of exclamation marks? No...it's allright...i'll recover. Give me a moment.

Well, it's an interesting situation. I thought that one poster made a very good point about fanfic writers not having money to contribute to campaigns most of the time. I know I certainly don't have money for that, though I'd like to contribute. So if somebody else wants to do it for me...oh whatever. Since I'm not involved, I'll just shrug.

*shrug*

However, it is rather gratifying to see people discuss something as potentially volatile as this with so much restraint. It may not be very exciting, but the Roman Colisseum version of fandom isn't really my ideal, to be honest.

On a completely serious note, I think it's a good idea with a massive flaw centered on property laws. Maybe a typeathon or something would be a better idea, with people pleding $1 for every thousand words, or something. Then if you wrote fanfic, it'd be irrelevant, because you'd be exchanging the time for donations, as opposed to the content.

I do particularly like how he rants on about how offensive it is for people to say nasty things about Bush or America then turns around and says that all of us fat foreigners can only afford to roll in our Dorito crumbs because we're under their protection.

I find that pretty offensive but also laughably untrue.

Australians do have an army which we paid for ourselves and it's a very nice one. Not very big, but we don't have very many people. I'm sincerely grateful for the assistance we got from the US in the '40s (although I wish they'd kept MacArthur). But we haven't actually needed defending or recieved any military assistance in sixty years and have paid to participate in every war the US has started since, and are still paying for the rehabilitation of the soldiers involved and their families. We save on taxes because of them? As far as the military goes, the US costs us billions of dollars. We essentially trade military and diplomatic backing for a place to sell our exports to.

Me, I can't say I like the idea of fan_the_vote. It seems silly, and I agree with some of the calm posters in the first thread about how this is a pretty shameless bribery attempt, and, indeed, I'd rather have honest apathy too.

There wasn't too much wank, except for the folks who rambled on and tried to morally justify themselves. "Ooooh, I'm doing bad things but it's okay!" B.S.

That second one, though, produces ungodly wank; spooge all over the place from a loud-n-strident Good Ol' Angry American. While some of his viewpoints I may be sympathetic to... hey, he can froth in his LJ if he wants, I guess.
