Current mood:

Sort of OT, but its going to bug me until I ask....
For us semi-newbies, and for the total newbies, I have to ask this. Please be gentle as you razz me for ignorance.

What do some of the terms I see used all the time mean? Like OP, OTP, BNF, and AU? Or any other terms there might be. Can we possibly get a guide for the clueless?

Thank you for your time. Feel free to commence with the finger pointing and laughing.

EDIT: Saying thank you to all of you who responded here, instead of trying to catch up with each individual post (I admit it, I'm lazy as hell). It warms my heart that you all responded so nicely, instead of raking this newbie and others over the coals. Such lovely people here......

OP: Original poster.
OTP: One True Pairing. Wank is generated when fans of two mutually exclusive OTPs clash.
BNF: Big Name Fan. They tend to have many mionions and gather wank like cow crap gathers flies.
AU: Alternative Universe. Usually a fanficiton where some premise of the story is changed. Often used by fangirls to mean 'my story is out of character and badly written, so I'll say it's AU and make it all right!'

OT3: One True Threeway. While an OTP is putting Han and Luk in bed together, an OT3 tosses Leia in for good measure.

AU: Alternate Universe. tends to resemble the canon in some way with a major departure point. "What if:" A) Qui-Gon had lived and Anakin never fell B) The Skywalker Twins were the same sex, both girlsd or both boys? C) Han never sacrficied himsefl fr Chewie and was still an Imerpial.

AR: This is Alternate reality. What if Luke were Illugi Anason and off to Miklagard (Constantinople) at the behest of his grandfather, Owan Jenson, to become a Varangian (elite warrior) like his father? And he took passage on the Valr (Falcon), only to learn that Ani Owanson was still alive and needed his help to leave off being The Black One and be Ani again? (yes, this is an actual story, and yes the names are authentic)

Let me give this a shot:

OP: Original Poster -- i.e., the person who posted the LJ or f_w post that started a wank.

OTP: One True Pairing, an acronym for the pairing favored (however ironically) by a given shipper/slasher contingent. Primarily used sarcastically around here. A variation is "OT3," One True Threesome.

BNF: Big-Name Fan. A fixture in fandom, and in some cases respected more than the original creator. (Cassie Claire in HP fandom is the most obvious example.) A term often thrown around in wanks.

AU: Alternate Universe, a genre of fanfic dedicated to exploring the characters or situations in an alternate plot stream, background, or setting. When this is done well, it can be quite good, but more often "AU" is used as as an excuse for bad characterization, random non-canonicity, and horrible fanfiction involving the LotR/etc. characters in high school.

OTT is also used for One True Threesome.

BNF - This used to describe a proper Big Name Fan, like someone who knew the actors or has inside info. Now, it's used to describe anyone who's written a fic that more than three people have read.

How to tell if someone's a BNF or not: Ask me. If I've never heard of them, chances are, they are.

Heeeeeee. So true.

Corollary: Ask me. I don't really interact in any fandom (except... Fandom Wank), and if even *I've* heard of you, you're truly a BNF. Given how I probably heard of you... this is generally not a good thing.

I'm personally very fond of the Bagenders' definition as well:

Cunning way of utterly ignoring every salient plot fact about a given movie/tv programme except for the most important one, i.e. that it stars Ewan MacGregor.

Here's a link to the wank itself: http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/374922.html

It was very, very, very long. The PASTEDE ON YAY comment came during the very first page (I think). If you just want the highlights, go to the metaquotes community - here's the first one: http://www.journalfen.net/community/metaquotes/36975.html

OP = Original Poster. This is the person who starts the thread.
OTP = One True Pairing. This is the coupling you support above all others.
BNF = Big Name Fan. This is someone whom everyone knows.
AU = Alternative Universe. This is a fan fiction where the casts is put in a completely different setting.
AT = Alternative Timeline. This is a fan fiction where one event in the canon timeline is changed and the fan fiction takes off from there.

What other terms do you need? IC? OOC? Mary-sue? OC? Canon?

Anon Question
(Anonymous)
2004-05-14 03:03 pm UTC (link)
I've been lurking on F_W for some time and would love to join, however I have a problem. A member of F_W trolls me wherever I go. If I join under my LJ name, she is likely to do this and will break the F_W rule of not creating the wank. At the very least it may cause unnecessary wank within wank.

The easy answer would be to join under a new name, but if that was ever found out, I might be the one accused of puppetry.

Any suggestions?
