Hail Jennifer, mother of wank!
Looks like JDR is feeling..."frisky" lately. No, wait, I meant "insanely bitchy".

For the uninitiated, JDR is an insane, semi-housebound otaku with a queerly loyal cult following, and all KINDS of issues. She is also the World's Greatest Victim, and never admits fault if she can pin it on someone else. Also she thinks that we're on the verge of a Big Gay Holocaust, and uses her exceptionally piss-poor "art" and "thought"--all of which, I can assure you, has a delightful bouquet of fruity "I wish I was Japanese" and even fruitier "My Goddess this is brilliant and OMG SO KAWAIICLEVAR" notes--to get the message across.

Some guy: Hey, JDR, this propaganda poster you clearly ripped out of an image gallery doesn't look hand-painted at all! What gives?

JDR: I took a very long time to make that look extra shitty, thank you very much!

Other forumites: OMG I GET THE REFERENCE IT WAS LIKE RUSSIANS OR SOMETHING HOREY

Alfador: HUGGLES 4-EVA

JDR: BTW, guys, totally sad over here!

Other forumites: OMG your artcock must be so cold! Please allow me to warm it with my mouth and ass and eyes!

Alfador: YOU NEED A DOSE OF VITAMIN HUGGLE (also: buttsex)

Some other guy: HA HA I HOPE THAT THIS IS NOT COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

And some other other guy: Maybe you shouldn't call it hand-painted, since that usually means you did it by hand instead of with a computer?

JDR: It is totally not copyright infringement blah blah blah Communists suck blah blah blah also AmeriKKKa blah blah blah GODDAMMIT IT'S ART SO IT'S OK AND I'M NOT MAKING ANY MONEY OFF IT ANYWAY SO CRY KNEEL BEFORE ZOD JDR

JDR: Also you are totally immature and a dick and I had to use my hands to manipulate the tablet and it's more environmentally sound so FUCK YOU AND STOP DISRESPECTING MY WORK BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO SOUL.

Bonus wank because I hate you all: DAMN KIDS

Christ, I love JDR.

Next time, though, I think I am going to take the easy way out and just draw from scratch...

Next time, I'm going to take the easy way out and write my own stories. It takes so much blood, sweat and tears on slightly rearranging someone else's words to look almost as if I wrote them myself, and then I have to figure out how to spell "plagiarism" when I defend myself. It's hard. ~cries bitterly~

Wow. The best thing about this was that for a satire propaganda poster, the entire thing was for shit. If she really only does artwork for the praise ("I do the work to a great extent for the uplift of hearing that things maybe rocked a little. I need it...I get depressed pretty easily, I am afraid"), can't she do a better goddamn job? I mean, Communist peasants can do better than that in between milking yaks and dodging the secret police.

Wow, how many laws does that "Damn Kids" link break? I can count at least one -- the whole "I am SADDENED that YOUNG PEOPLE with YOUR ATTITUDES are our FUTURE" thing.

Has it never occurred to her that even those of us 20 and under can call a spade a spade (or, in this case, a shitty webcomic a shitty webcomic)?

JDR scares me. I love Otakuworld(a huge, popular site she works on) but avoid anything having to do with her like the plague.
To clarify the gender thing she used to be a guy and now has gone through surgery apparently, so yes, she's a she. She's also polyamorous and every other single damn "trendily freaky" stereotype. Go take a peek at portalofevil.com and look in the archives, she's featured in there somewhere.

Because one thing alone frees any artist, any person, from the abuse that Indexcards has described....money and fame, and lots of it.

Be rich enough, and famous enough, and however empty an airhead, however opinionated, however mean or generous, and suddenly, one is immune.

This is 100% true, at least. The rich and famous never, ever get shit from the common public. Like when the Dixie Chicks went to that place and said that thing about Bush? Remember how they suffered no backlash at all? Or how nobody ever criticizes Anne Rice's works and thoughts, and nobody ever said Gigli sucked because it had all those big-name people in it?

If anything, the rich and famous get more shit from the general public, because more people know about them. They just, by and large, don't care and don't run webforums where the occasional malcontent critic will pierce their deluded "You're the most creative creator to ever create creations!" bubble'o'worship, so they're not confronted with it as often.

OMG! Unicorn Jelly, one of the first obscure "fandoms" I ever saw wanked here. It scared the holy crap out of me, that someone could be so delusional and that someone so untalented could have fans. I mean, it was my first experience with literal delusions of granduer. SCARY!

Oh, and another thing I find good to keep in mind throughout the whole JDR thing..The woman claims to be so damn open-minded and loving and tolerant and all this nonsense but look at this! It's a position she still holds(If you notice, it's from 1980, but she still talks like that.)
THAT is personally offensive to ME as a human being. I'm a quite non-traditional Christian, and there's lots of stuff that I disagree with, especially in my own religion! But I wouldn't even DREAM of drawing something for the sheer purpose of mocking someone else's beliefs just because I disagree with them. Not even because someone tormented me. How would I be helping myself by lowering to their level of hatefulness?
I have respect for other religions and find them fascinating and fun to learn about. My own boyfriend is a Pagan for crying out loud. There are a lot of people in the world like me and it seems like JDR selectively ignores the ones that are like that, and it really burns my brownies. If she openly said "hey, I'm a bitter cunt, I've had bad experiances with christians, and they leave a bad taste in my mouth" I would understand and chalk it up to her having been treated REALLY bad, yanno? But she goes around like some self-righteous preachy..dare I say it..EVANGELIST proclaiming her all-knowing all-loving-ness. It makes me want to spew.

I was actually a fan of Unicorn Jelly for a long time--I thought the early story was cute and interesting, but it became progressively convoluted and irritating and then I witnessed her behavior on PoE (and elsewhere, like her forums).

As for the issue of hand/digital painting--yes, there is a serious difference. If you make a mistake with actual paintbrushes on an actual canvas and actual paint, you can't erase it. You either work around it or you just start the whole business over again. Actual canvases have no 'undo' function, I'm afraid.

This is also not to disrespect digital art--I understand that it takes a great deal of time and effort, but the comparison between painting with a real and a digital paintbrush just isn't there for me.

Pastel Defender Heliotrope reminds me of Sweet Cuppin Cakes, mostly because both titles make me say "WTF?"

and in regards to her Propaganda Poster, someone on her forum says:
Personally, I think it adds a lot, just like the woodprint style did. By using that style, Jennifer instantly communicated the nature and intent of the poster, which was a real bonus for me because I can't read the script. How can anyone dislike it?

I can dislike it very easily friend, VERY easily.

In these ways I stand against this nihilism, I say it is a toxic thing, a thing which leaches the joy from life, and the soul from human beings.

Just when I thought my Saturday night was lacking in diversion. Good. Lord.

In saying these words, I realize how much I have fallen from them over the past few years. In an effort to avoid attack, I have become self-depricating. In order to avoid being mocked, I have said less and less about how I feel, or who I am, or what matters to me, save for moments when it bursts forth in anger unbound.

It comes unbound! It whips around like a loose hose! Duck!

In short, I have been steadily conforming, and that sucks. It sucks because what I am conforming to, sucks, for the reasons I have just stated.

So, she's saying it sucks?

I am going to think about this matter. I am not the powerful person I was when I was first doing Unicorn Jelly.

Gone are the days of legend and daring, of fierce artistic inspiration and limitless courage. Gone are the days of Unicorn Jelly.

And all because of those damned kids! Damn you, damned kids!

I don't know many people who thrive on fan criticism. I know of even fewer who cut loose and rail like this, though. Holy cats. Maybe she can explore the joys of dignified silence and professional pluck? I mean, if she's going to post her stuff on the internet instead of keeping it under her sofa.

(And she's despairing of this perverse and faithless generation because somebody noticed her pixels? Did she think civilization was falling before she got a few negative posts? Wow.)

I have known Jennifer Diane Rietz for a fair number of years. We're not what you could call super-close, we've never met in real life, but nevertheless I consider her a friend--and I am not a groupie or an ego-stroker or a "JDR cultist", whatever that means. I realize this is one of the bitchiest, snarkiest, wankiest and most vicious forums online, and I'm not saying I don't love it for that. But when someone I consider a friend is being verbally crucified, I have to step up and object even if it does no good whatsoever.

Whatever you think of Jennifer, her work, her thoughts, her ideas, her opinions, her fanbase, or whatever, she still has as much right to speak her mind, voice her opinions, share her creativity and express herself as anyone else. I'm not saying Jen is the most stable person on the planet. She's not. I'm not either and it takes one to know one.

But I think a lot of the statements about her in the above postings are unnecessarily vilifying. And I don't think her artwork is crappy just because it's not polished, rotoscoped and sanitized for your protection.

I followed Unicorn Jelly from the very beginning. I loved it for about two-thirds of the run. I started liking it less when it became less "genki" and more "gloom and doom apocalyptic", and I flat-out HATED the ending. Moreover, I told Jen as much, and she didn't go off on me. I don't candy-coat and I don't kiss anybody's ass. Not even FW's collective one.
